This year as you prepare to kick-off of the giving

season, don’t forget about #GivingTuesday, a

global day dedicated to giving back. Tuesday,

December 2, 2014, people all around the world

will come together for one common purpose: to

celebrate generosity and to give to local charita-

ble organizations.

There are three ways that you can participate in

Giving Tuesday. You can give time, resources, or

you can give voice. At CAMP we are makeing it

easy to give all three ways.

Give Time

Check out the CAMP Respite Club Calendar and

commit to serve one weekend a month during the

school year or spend a week with our CAMPers

during the summer. It is easy and fun to be a vol-

unteer and it makes such a difference in the lives

of people with special needs and those who care

for them. Click here for a Volunteer Application

and get started today.

Give Resources

If like to shop, check out

the CAMP Wish List for

items needed for Respite

Club. From books and de-

velopmental games to a

brand new refrigerator,

every item on the Wish

List is used during Respite

Club activities.

Don’t like to shop? CAMP has you covered.

Make a financial gift to CAMP in honor of some-

one on your holiday gift list. No gift is too big or

too small and you don't have to keep up with the

receipt because this is one gift that won't be re-

turned!

Gifts made to CAMP are used to

strengthen and inspire individuals

with special needs—and those who

care for them—through Recreation,

Respite, and Education.

Give Voice

Share how you observe #GivingTuesday. Use

Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to invite friends

and family to join you on Giving Tuesday. YOU

can make the holidays more generous this year!

They came on October 11th. Volunteer and Staff

Alumni from across three and a half decades of

CAMP history. They brought their children, their

partners, their memories, and their Chacos.

They reconnected with old friends and made a few

new ones. They swapped stories from CAMP’s past

and caught up with the vision for CAMP’s future.

Some were from the very first CAMP in 1979. Othe

attendees served as recently as the last summer.

They all came to celebrate CAMP!

Rachel Palow-Guillen started at CAMP as a

Counselor in Training in 1992. By her last summer in

2004, she had worked her up to CAMP Director.

Guillen sums up her 12 years at CAMP this way, “Up

until I had my own children, my work at CAMP is

probably the most important thing I’ve ever done.”

While Guillen acknowledges that CAMP makes a

profound impact on CAMPers she believes,

“(Supporting) CAMP is one of the most important

ways that people can make a difference, not just in

the lives of CAMPers, but in the lives of teenagers.”

And Guillen is not alone.

D o n n a C a m p i o n i s

numbered among the first

group of volunteers to

serve at CAMP in 1979.

She expresses a sense of

pride at being an original

part of the CAMP legacy.

“I often reflect on my time

at CAMP, because it opened

my eyes to blessings in my life that I took for

granted. Like many young people, I didn’t

appreciate my blessings until I encountered

CAMPers who face challenges every day and do so

with grace and joy. It changed my life!”

Alex Soliz is a relative newcomer to CAMP. He

served as a volunteer from 2010 to 2011 and

returned as lead staff in 2013. He missed spending

this past summer at CAMP (2014), so he was thrilled

to have an opportunity to return for the Alumni

Reunion. “I always pencil in respite events on my

calendar with the hope of coming back, but life just

gets in the way,” said Soliz.

His favorite CAMP story involves an experience as

the counselor for a CAMPer with limited

communication skills. “I’m an enthusiastic person so

I started the week at a high level of energy, but my

CAMPer couldn’t give me any verbal feedback. On

top of that he cried every night at bedtime.”

Soliz tried not to let his enthusiasm dip, but he

worried that his CAMPer wasn’t enjoying his week.

Soliz’s worries were reinforced at closing

ceremonies when the CAMPer’s family arrived and

he began to cry.

“Wow!” said the CAMPer’s mother, “He must have

really had a great time this week. He only cries

when he has to stop doing something he loves!”

“That experience taught me to never give up. Even

when you don’t see results on the surface, you never

can tell what’s going on underneath,” said Soliz.

Nicole Smith has spent the majority of her life as a

part of the CAMP family. She was only eight years

old when she became a Sioux CAMPer. In the small

community she grew up in, her brother was the only

child in their school with an obvious disability.

“Before CAMP, I thought I was the only one in the

world who had a little brother in a wheelchair. CAMP

changed my perspective on the world. It gave me a

connection to so many other people who shared my

experience.”

When she turned fourteen Smith became a

counselor. At sixteen she spent an entire summer at

CAMP. “I remember going home bone tired on Friday

and coming back on Sunday ready to do it again. It

was the best summer of my life!”

As an adult, Smith returned to CAMP as a Health

Care Volunteer. CAMP is also the place where she

and husband Jay were married. Now a mother,

Smith credits her experience as a CAMP counselor

with preparing her for parenthood, “I learned about

being a parent at CAMP because I was responsible

for the health and safety of my CAMPer, including

feeding and bathing, dressing, and caring for their

emotional needs. So, when my daughter came

along I felt confident and comfortable in my role as

mother.”

This sentiment is echoed by Guillen, “At the age of

fifteen I was responsible for making sure that my

CAMPer was breathing, that he had a steady body

temperature, and that he had fun!”

Each CAMP Alumni has a personal story that makes

their CAMP experience unique, but, there is common

denominator; each one of them shares a sense of

purpose, humility, and worth-which impacts every

area of their lives.

For Guillen CAMP is what has shaped her, “I am the

leader, the teacher and the citizen that I am today

because of CAMP. It has made me a better person.”

Thirty-five years later, Campion continues to be

strengthened by what she discovered at CAMP as a

teenager, “Because of CAMP I have a sense of

purpose no matter what challenges I face.”

Alex sees CAMP as a guiding force, “Because of

CAMP I’m able to respect people for who they are

and not because of the circumstances that life has

attributed to them. I take the time to see past what

is on the surface and see who they truly are on the

inside.”

However, it is Smith’s poetic words that encompass

the universal experience that is CAMP, “CAMP has

been the focal point and the grounding place for my

entire life, it is the gravity that has held me to this

ground, and this ground, right here, is hallowed

space for me.”
