George Wood o f Troop 3 i n Norwalk was awarded t h e Medal of Mer i t f o r s a v i n g t h e l i f e o f a f i v e y e a r o l d c h i l d , wh i l e v a c a t i o n i n g i n V i r g i n i a l a s t summer.

While wa lk ing a long t h e A t l a n t i c Ocean nea r L i l i a n , Va. on J u l y 4 , 1968, he saw Ca the r ine Lynn Andrews tumble from a s m a l l f l o a t i n t o wa te r ove r h e r head. Without a moment's h e s i t a t i o n , Scout Wood, who h o l d s a Mer i t Badge i n swimming, swam abou t 1 5 yards t o r e a c h t h e c h i l d and r e t u r n h e r s a f e l y t o s h o r e . Since C a t h e r i n e ' s p l i g h t was n o t immediate ly n o t i c e d by o t h e r s , George ' s concern and qu ick r e sponse a v e r t e d a t radgedy.
