county borough councillors– Mike Adams, Colin Gordonand Gez Kirby – are againstthe proposal, fearing it couldaffect Islwyn residents whouse services at Ty Pontllan-fraith.Cllr Kirby, who spoke at the
committee meeting, also be-lieves a move will hit the lo-cal economy. He said: “We allrecognise our council’s needto make savings because ofthe Tory Westminster gov-

will have their say about thisplan in response to our coun-cil’s public consultation onbudget proposals, before a fi-nal decision is made.”That decision is due next
February, when the councilmeets to set its 2015/16 budg-et.Council spending must be
cut by around £40million dur-ing the next three years, andclosing Ty Pontllanfraith is

that while there may be someconcerns, the offices are notused by the general public ingreat numbers, modern tech-nology enables people to com-municate with the council inother ways, and there are oth-er council offices in the area.
It also high-lights “asigni f icantand high-cost repairliability” forTy Pontllan-fraith, whichwas built in1977.

See our website: www.pressureulcers.org for more information.
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people developpressure sores each year whilst in hospital or private nursingcare. Pressure sores are painful and debilitating and, if leftuntreated, can cause serious harm and even death. The costto the NHS of treating pressure sores and related conditionsis up to £4bn a year. These are truly shocking statistics whenyou consider that in the vast majority of cases pressure sorescan be prevented by proper assessment and nursing care.
Pressure sores are said to affect up to 20 per cent of patientsin acute care, 30 per cent of people in the community and20 per cent of people in nursing and residential homes. Theycan develop within hours and, although generally affect olderpeople, anyone who is immobile for a period of time can beat risk. Expectant mothers who have been given an epiduralinjection and rendered immobile are a particular risk group,as are younger people with mobility issues due to illness.
Anyone who has suffered or nursed someone with apressure sore will know how very painful and unpleasant thecondition can be. They usually affect the base of the patientsspine (sacrum) or heel and buttocks and cause misery formonths while they are being treated. It is a travesty that inmany cases this pain and suffering has been brought aboutneedlessly due to a basic lack of nursing care or the failureto provide the proper pressure relieving equipment, such asspecialist mattresses.
Most people are unaware that they may be able to claimcompensation for the pain and suffering caused by pressuresores which develop when they are in nursing care. Signiicantawards of damages have been made to patients who havedeveloped pressure sores. These awards relect the extent ofthe ulcers, and the length of time they have taken to heal. Insome cases the families of deceased patients are also entitledto compensation when their loved ones developed pressuresores, even in the later stages of nursing care.
In recent cases a total award of £8,500 was made to a67 year old man who suffered grade 2 pressure ulcers toboth heels for a period of 2 months. In another case, theestate of a 77 year old man who developed a grade 3-4 sacralpressure sore which persisted for 9 months and acceleratedhis death, was awarded the sum of £21,500. Within the lastmonth we have settled a case for a sum in excess of £40,000for of a young lady who developed a pressure sore whengiven an epidural during child birth.
If you or a loved one is suffering or has suffered from apressure sore in the last two and a half_years, you shouldseek legal advice NOW. We offer a free consultation withour in house doctor to discuss any concerns, and we arehappy to offer you advice even if you do not wish to pursue aclaim for compensation at this stage.

Staff in dressdown days aidfoodbanksFOODBANKS in the Caerphilly countyborough have received a helping handthis Christmas, thanks to generous do-nations from council staff.Staff from across Caerphilly County
Borough Council took part in a Fashionfor Food day recently where they donat-ed items of food in exchange for dress-ing down.Fashion for Food is an annual appeal
held by the authority and is in its thirdyear. It was co-ordinated by the council’sCaerphilly Homes team, responsible forhousing in the county borough. All donated food was distributed
equally to foodbanks in Blackwood,Caerphilly, New Tredegar and Risca, which all rely upon donations from lo-cal people.Cllr Gerald Jones, deputy leader and
cabinet member for housing, said:“We’ve seen a stark increase in the num-ber of people relying upon food banks inrecent years. Food banks in the countyborough offer a lifeline to many localpeople, particularly during the Christ-mas period, and the council is alwayskeen to offer support in any way it can.“Again this year, the generosity of
council staff and businesses has beenoverwhelming and I would personallylike to thank everyone who donated tothis worthy cause, along with those peo-ple who helped with the appeal.”

Diabetics urged to watch treatsTHERE are around 10,700 peopleliving with diabetes in Caerphil-ly and in the run up to Christ-mas a charity encourages themto be mindful of their condition.Diabetes UK recognises that
following a healthy lifestyle atChristmas can be a struggle, butstresses that having the condi-tion should not mean missingout on traditional festive foods. However, the charity does not
advise people with diabetes, ortheir family or friends, to buy
“diabetic” foods such as diabeticChristmas cake or chocolate. These offer no special benefitto people with diabetes and willstill affect blood glucose levels.Dai Williams, national direc-
tor at Diabetes UK Cymru, said:“We want everyone with diabe-tes to enjoy their Christmas andthat doesn’t mean denying your-self your favourite festive treats.“The key is to plan and be
mindful of how a treat may af-fect your blood glucose.
“The other important thingto remember is to stay active,as this will help you to manageblood glucose levels. For exam-ple, take a wintry walk to a localpark or landmark. Alternatively, you could try ice skating or evenhead out to the sales.”One or two high blood glucose
readings shouldn’t affect long-term control, but persistentlyhigh readings should be avoided. For more, visit diabetes.org.

Stylish Vitara delivers plenty of characterTHE old Grand Vitara has beendrawing its pension for years, soit’s no surprise that its replace-ment, the road-biased Vitara (no‘Grand’ this time) is light yearsahead. It gets a new chassis and is a
similar size to Suzuki’s own SX4S-Cross, but is shorter, wider andtaller. There’s also a newpart-time four-
wheel drive system, a whole bunchof luxury features including a re-versing camera, a panoramic slid-ing sunroof and climate control, and it’s not set to be particularlyexpensive, either. It’s very obvi-ously led by style and chunkinesssuits it to a tee.The interior is for the first time
customisable, with different col-oured trim inserts and even anoption to have the classy centralanalogue clock use Kanji Japanesesymbols instead of nondescriptdashes. While it shares basic chassis
components with the SX4 S-Cross,the Vitara has its own character.
It sacrifices boot space and somerear legroom, but adds width, sothree kids will fit more comfort-ably. The front seats may as wellhave been ripped out of the VIPlounge on a cruise liner. There’s somuch space up front that you’d bemad to want more. This is not a small SUV, but even
so, it’s a pleasant surprise to slot inand find yourself so high up abovethe road. There’s loads of adjust-ment in the driving position, too.The diesel engine is strong and
linear, if a little coarse at times. Itpicks up well even from low revsand drags the Vitara’s modestweight out of corners with gusto. Its slightly squarer footprint nextto the S-Crossmakes it feel slightlynimbler, but the steering calibra-tion on the pre-production car wedrove seemed too light and vague.Overall, though, the Vitara is avery pleasant thing to drive. With final UKprices set to be con-
firmed exactly, all we know is thatthis will be about one trim levelcheaper than the slightly larger S-
Cross, or something like £1,000 lessfor a like-for-like trim grade. Peo-ple with less need for boot spaceand more desire for style withoutsacrificing all-weather driving sta-bility will love it.

Sporty Porsche 911 GTS is touch of classAT first glance the 911 GTSmight look very familiar butthis particular variant is allabout the details. In the grandhierarchy the GTS sits be-tween the quickest “normal”variant – the Carrera S – andthe precision track instrumentthat is the GT3. It also bridgesa significant price void.So your GTS comes with a
more powerful 3.8-litre engine, unique suspension tuning, thechoice of two or four-wheel-drive, coupe or convertible,Turbo-look front spoiler, gor-geous centre-lock wheels andthe wider body. Although thebasic shape is the same the911’s looks depend very muchon the model you choose. TheGTS has that bigger Turbofront bumper with biggerscoops which makes it lookmore aggressive, but this isbalanced by the wider body atthe rear. Add in those beauti-ful centre-lock alloy wheelsand it looks superb. A CarreraS looks a little more pure but
it’s less fussy than the full-onTurbo.The 911 in any guise is still
a relatively compact car andsticks with two proper seats inthe front and occasional seatsin the rear. It’s the front seatsyou want to be in of course, and you get leather-trimmedsports seats as standard.Being rear-engined the boot
is in the front but it’s actuallyquite spacious. The key mechanical changes
to the GTS make themselvesfelt as soon as you drive away. With a unique suspensiontune and one that is a littlestiffer than the Carrera S, theGTS is clearly more focussed. However the standard-fit Por-sche Active Suspension Man-agement (PASM) means youcan dial up three differentsuspension settings to suit theconditions. The stats show it ismore powerful and faster thana Carrera S, but as the driverall you know is that it is a sen-sationally quick car. The en-
gine crackles away (helped bythe standard sports exhaust)as the revs rise and you canrev it hard. When driven hardthe GTS’s class shows; sharpand communicative steering, unshakeable brakes and beau-tiful poise. It’s hard to want foranything more.

Travelling by train can bemore costly than drivingCOMMUTING by car can beup to 30 per cent cheaper formany workers across the UK,particularly in areas wheretrain fare increases have ris-en the most. Some rail commuters are
now paying 162 per cent morefor their journeys than theywere only a few weeks ago.Commuting during peak
times prevents many railtravellers from enjoying thelower fares, which meansthat the car is often thecheaper option.A survey by Flexed found
a peak fare from Leeds toLeicester costs £63.40 for areturn, but a car can coverthe same return journey for£38.52.Even if the rail user trav-
els during off-peak hours, the train still costs more at£42.20.Other findings revealed
that a commuter travelingvia train from Nottinghamto Birmingham would ex-pect to pay £35.50 for a peakreturn booked online in ad-vance.In contrast, a return jour-
ney in a car would cost just£20.60.Many of those interviewed
for the survey said theycould use public transportor walk or cycle to work butchose to drive for conveni-ence, safety and comfort.
Major attraction gets set tohonour motor racing heroesSOME of motor racing’sgreatest names will be hon-oured at the inaugural Lon-don Classic Car Showwhen itopens its doors in a little overa month’s time. One of the major attrac-
tions at the show, which runsfrom January 8-11 at ExCeLin London’s docklands, willbe the Motor Sport Hall ofFame, a tribute to the eightfounding members of motorracing’s most exclusive club. For more than 90 years, Mo-
tor Sport magazine has beenfaithfully recording all themajor events every month in
the pages behind its famousBritish Racing Green cover. The magazine inaugurated
its Hall of Fame, recognisingthe sport’s greatest names, in2010. The display at the Lon-don Classic Car Show will al-low the public to experiencethe idea first hand, for thefirst time.Commenting on the oppor-
tunity, Motor Sport editorDamien Smith said: “Havingestablished the Hall of Fameas an exclusive club to whichdrivers, riders, engineersand team owners can aspire,we’re expanding the concept
beyond a glitzy VIP eveningin London, beyond the pagesof the magazine and website, and out to the people whomatter most: our readers andvisitors.”The thrilling display at the
show will turn the spotlighton eight pillars of the sport’shistory. They are F1 world cham-
pions Michael Schumacher,Juan Manual Fangio, SirJackie Stewart, Ayrton Sen-na, Jim Clark, Enzo Ferrariand Tazio Nuvolari, plus thegreatest driver never to winthe title, Sir Stirling Moss.
Female motorists are ive timesless likely to get breath-testWOMEN are up to five timesless likely to be breath test-ed than men, new researchclaims.Via a Freedom of Infor-
mation request, car insurerDirect Line discovered thatonly 23% of roadside breathtests are conducted on wom-en, and a lower proportion ofwomen fail them than men.Even in northWales, where
the breath-testing rate is byfar the highest in the coun-try at 72 tests for every 1,000people between August 2013and August 2014, womenmake up only 29% of thosestopped. The national average for
breath-testing is 12 tests per1,000 people, while one in tenmen fail compared to only 7%of women.Previous research by Di-
rect Line revealed that 17 percent of female motorists havedriven whilst over the limit inthe past year. When asked whythey did this, 14 per cent saidit was due to a perception thatthere was little risk of gettingcaught.Gus Park, commercial direc-
tor of motor at Direct Line, said “Roadside testing is animportant deterrent and helpsimprove driver safety by keep-ing intoxicated motorists offthe road.
“With such a small differ-ence between the proportionof men and women who passa breath test, it’s surprisingto see such a discrepancy inthe overall numbers beingtested.”

Bargoed opened the scoring on 21 min-utes with a penalty try awarded by westWales referee Neil Jones following anillegal attempt to stop a scrum beingdriven over at short range. Josh Prosserconverted.Captain and hooker Leigh Meades add-
ed to the score four minutes from halftime, getting an armchair ride from hisforwards as they powered over the linefor an unconverted score. The half timewhistle went with the score at 12-0.The forwards were soon in the thick of
it again from the start of the second half, with a driving maul bringing the thirdtry through prop Rhys Morgan. Prosserconverted to make it 19-0.Two minutes later, Bargoed were down
