Campbell College Belfast Revision Summaries for End-of-Year 10 Examinations May 2015 This booklet provides summaries of the subject content to be revised in each of the subjects for this year’s end -of-year examinations. This booklet provides summaries of the subject content to be revised in each

of the subjects for this year’s end-of-year examinations. In some cases, it

will be supplemented by material given out in lessons; in others, it includes

Year 10 Maths

Full information about the Y10 Maths exam, including Revision Topics and Hints and Tips can be found on the Maths department website www.ccbmaths.moonfruit.com.

Students will also be given a comprehensive revision list by their class teacher. In Year 10, this will cover the following topics (The topics marked with an * require formula to be learnt):

Students who are also wish to do Further Maths GCSE should ensure they are able to complete the harder questions from the above topics and also cover the following topics:

Year 10 Religious Education

Pupils will need to know the Core Content on each of the Coversheets they have studied this

year. This includes Keywords and the Key Questions.

Year 10 English The exam will be made up of a speaking and listening task, a reading task and a writing task.

Speaking and listening

1. Ensure you prepare your ideas thoroughly and have made good notes to help you

2. In the discussion make certain that you:

- are focussed and listening at all times

- explain your points of view clearly

- be as detailed and mature as possible

- ask questions

- ask others to get involved if they are quiet

- come to an agreement

Reading and Writing

1. Pay close attention to class discussions of the skills that are required

2. Ensure that practice exercises are completed to the best of your ability

3. Think carefully about the errors you make in practice to ensure that you learn from the

experience

A crucial aspect in completing the writing task successfully is writing accurately in terms of

spelling, punctuation and grammar. You can practise this by writing short passages (15-20

minutes) at home and then carefully checking them for accuracy.

Year 10 Chemistry

The Year 10 Chemistry Examination will cover the following sections.

The first three booklets

1. Types of Chemical Reactions

Understand what is meant by the term decomposition.

Define the terms oxidation and reduction.

Apply the concept of oxidation and reduction to unfamiliar reactions.

Write a word equation for the thermal decomposition of limestone

List three observations when calcium oxide reacts with water.

Define the terms renewable and non -renewable

List observations to determine the products of a chemical reaction of an acid with metal, carbonate and alkali.

Give the general reactions of an aci d with a metal, an alkali (or base) and a carbonate.

Apply the general reactions of acids to unfamiliar reactions.

Define the terms endothermic and exothermic

Apply knowledge of the different types of chemical reactions to word equations.

2. Atomic Structure

List the names and properties of three particles which make up the structure of the atom.

Deduce the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom given the Atomic and Mass numbers.

Determine the electronic configuration of an atom.

Draw a representation of an atom from the information provided in the Periodic Table.

Give a definition for the term an isotope.

Explain that chemical reactions involve atoms changing the number of electrons and represent how the structure of two atoms changes when they react together —simple examples only.

give a definition of what is meant by the term “formula”

deduce the formula of a substance

State if an equation is balanced or unbalanced by examining the formula on either side of the equation.

Balance equations by adding the appropriate numbers on either side of the equation.

3. Separating Techniques

Recognise hazard symbols and the appropriate care that must be taken

Define the terms elements and compounds

Apply knowledge of separating techniques to practically separate a variety of mixtures such as Iron and Sulfur.

Explain different separation techniques and be able to apply them when separating mixtures

Identify the states of matter and state the changes of state

Classify substances based in their chemical properties
