With hundreds of walkers and runners in this weekend’s annual Comox Valley Half Marathon Sunday, March 24 stretch or not to stretch that is the question—the question that one of my running clients asked me.

She is a runner and a few of her running partners were doing yoga. She wondered if added fl exibility would make her a better runner or prevent injuries. The short answer to her question is, “it depends.”

I hate fence-

sitting, but the sad truth is that after dozens of studies and years of debate, medical science is still divided as to whether stretching helps,

harms, or does anything at all for performance or injury rates.

On one hand, a study of 100 people revealed that the least fl exible expended 10 to 12 per cent less energy than the most fl exible when running at the same pace. This may seem counter intuitive, but consider how muscles work. Muscles convert

metabolic energy into mechanical work by pulling on bones through tendons. In a sport like running, stiffer muscles and tendons mean that less energy is wasted in this conversion process. Would you rather lift a weight with a bungy cord or a steel-braided cable—both will do the job, and one will be easier than the other.

On the other hand, in my practice I see many runners who suffer injuries as a result of muscle imbalances. Tight muscles can alter alignment and increase

wear and tear on joints, ligaments, and muscles. In the same way that a car with poor alignment

will wear out tires, a poorly aligned runner will wear through hips, knees, and feet. Changing a tire,

however, is easier than a knee replacement.

If you do choose to stretch, I recommend stretching after

running rather than before.

FORT RUPERT—Rough strips of tree bark were transformed into decorative hats, vases and baskets last weekend during a three-day cedar weaving workshop

hosted by Anthony Hunt and Donna Cranmer at the youth centre on the Kwakiutl First Nation reserve.

“It’s amazing how many people want to do this,” Hunt said Saturday as he surveyed a dozen participants scattered

among tables covered with narrow cedar strips, hat forms, water buckets, bottles and vases. “I want to try to do these here once a month, and also once a month in Port Hardy.”

The workshop began Friday with a lesson in “thinning” the cedar, turning the rough, raw material into smooth, narrow strips suitable for weaving.

With the aid of soaking and repeated sprinklings of water by weavers as they work, the cedar remains almost silky smooth and fl exible.

“I thought it would be rough; I thought, ‘what about splinters?’,” said Maggie Sedgemore. “But it’s very smooth. The hard part is thinning it right so you end up with long enough strips. You can’t do very much if the strips aren’t long.”

Hunt provides all the cedar bark, which he harvests each year during the warm months.

“You have to do it when the pitch is running on the red cedar,” said Hunt. “Otherwise, it won’t come off the tree.”

Last weekend’s workshop drew participants with a wide range of skill and experience, from veteran weavers to fi rst-timers like Debbie Hunt and Leslie McGarry, who both traveled from Victoria to take part.

After getting their initial lesson in thinning, weavers were given their choice of items to make. While Hunt recommends baskets or vases to new weavers, most opted to make the decorative and recognizable, wide-brimmed Kwakwaka’wakw cedar hat.

“The hats are a lot more work,” said Hunt, pointing out several vases and bottles that were already fi nished Saturday while most weavers were only halfway through completing their

On Saturday March 9th the Campbell River Salmon Foundation held the sixth annual Dinner/Dance and Auction. More than 400 tickets were sold to this event and the people came to eat, bid and dance. This annual event is well attended and the money raised goes to Salmon enhancement projects which includes new large capacity fi sh transport tank for the Quinsam Hatchery, Spawning gravel replacement in the Campbell River and Support for the City of Campbell Rivers’ Pinks on the Pier’. In total The Campbell River Salmon Foundation funded 12 projects in 2012.

Bruce Aikman will be guiding back on the water again this year. Most guides spend the winter getting their boats and gear ready for another fi shing season Bruce logged over 900 hours guiding at Painters Lodge in 2012 and can often be seen fi shing in the Tyee Pool.

With the recent rain in the area the rivers have been high and some steelhead fi shing has been reported as very good in the Salmon River.

The Oyster and Quinsam rivers are a great place to catch trout in certain pools and with the water conditions fl y fi shing has been good. The Elk river is a hard place to try fl y fi shing if you cant get to the pools holding trout.

Lakes are fi shing slowly in the upper elevation areas and local lakes Maple and Spider can be very good as the weather warms. Trolling lures and fl ies should get you some hits.

hats. “The thing that surprises them is now much cedar they need. There are about 300 to 400 pieces in a hat.”

The items are woven over hat-shaped forms, and are worked from the top down. Vases and bottles are also built around those items and can take a variety of shapes. In the case of long-necked bottles, the weaving remains wrapped decoratively around the bottle, which cannot be removed.

Many of the weavers worked at long, communal tables. Others worked singly

at smaller desks.They included

Rita Hunt, who sat surrounded by thick piles of rough cedar as she wove a hat on a miniature-sized form.

“I’m making a hat

for my granddaughter,”she said.

Anthony Hunt noted this would probably wrap up the workshop season as theweather turns to springand outdoor activities.

I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife saysthere is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask todeal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results.Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. COMOX VALLEY — I Can has taken a fi rm hold in a number of Comox Valley schools — and it may expand to other districts next year.

École Puntledge Park teacher Doug David is one of the Comox Valley teachers who has been involved in the initiative since its beginning during the 2010/11 school year, and he is also one of the teachers who hopes it will grow even more than it already has.

“I’ve been talking about this with people in Port Alberni and Chemainus and Qualicum and that, and so there’s interest out there, it’s just a matter of fi nding a way in,” he says. “We’re trying to be mindful of letting things kind of unfold with people’s curiosity…

“We want it to spread organically — grassroots.”

David and Huband

Park’s vice principal Catherine Manson, who was also involved with I Can from the start, presented on the initiative to the Comox Valley Board of Education a couple of weeks ago, noting its history and the possibility of its further growth.

I Can started as a cross-district partnership during the previous school year; a group of teachers wanted to see if implementing regular inquiry-based learning projects,

with a cross-school celebration at the end of year, would increase student engagement and motivate students to be self-directed learners.

During collaboration, the group watched a TED talk by Kiran Bir Sethi about a movement she started with students in India called I Can — which is designed to show students they have the power to create a better world through action. When the group of Comox

Grade 5 and 6 École Puntledge Park students visit seniors at the Comox Valley Seniors Village as part of an I Can initiative. I Can has grown in Comox Valley schools this year with many students helping others through a wide variety of projects.

Valley teachers saw how in line it was with what they were trying to do, they quickly

embraced it.Started with just

six or seven classes throughout the school district last year, the initiative grew

this year to spread into whole school initiatives at Aspen, Queneesh, Huband and Puntledge this year.

Students completed a variety of I Can projects like taking food to the food bank, visiting seniors, organizing play events with younger children and raising money for numerous causes and charities, among other things.

David then contacted Sethi, and after e-mail conversations about what’s going on in Comox Valley schools, Sethi told him she’s interested in the Comox Valley School District becoming a global partner with her organization Design for Change, which promotes a global movement around the idea of I Can.
