Mrs. Fleishman’s Kindergarten Class

Ms. Jessica’s 1st & 2nd Grade Class

August has been a month filled with learning firsts. We experienced our first day of elementary school, and met our first Superkid friend, Cass, who taught us about the letter Cc. We brought our parents to class during the Ice Cream Social and taught them all about our classroom- Thank you to the families that attended Open House, it was great to see you learning about our class! We learned to code robots, called Finches, and even had our first Fire Drill! We did a Super-Duper job!

September is now upon us. We are continuing to learn about the Alphabet with Oswald (Oo) and Golly (Gg). In math, we will continue to explore the numbers 0-5. We will be comparing sets, 0 to 5, that are less than, greater than and equal to each other.

Homework can be found in the green folder on Wednesdays. Please read with your child daily, the Reading Calendar should stay at home and be returned after the month is full. We will send a new Reading Calendar for September. The homework has directions that need to be read out loud to your child in order for them to understand the worksheet. All fold-ers are pulled from backpacks on Tuesdays.

Thank you to all of the parents who came to Open House and have stopped by the classroom with questions. Your involvement in your child's education is so important and we appreciate your support.

We have finished our review units in SuperKids and are ready to see what new adventures they will have. We will be learning letter blends like sh, th, wh, and ch. We will also be learning spelling patterns like Super E (also known as the silent e). Spelling words will be sent home on Monday and we will have a spelling test on Friday. Please help your child study!

In GoMath, we are continuing to work with addition and subtraction. We are reviewing concepts learned last year so we have a solid base to build on. We are also learning new ways to look at addition and subtraction to help us have a solid understanding of the relationship between them.

We are in full swing and working hard. We are focused on studying personal narratives in our CKLA program. In math, we are studying exponents and order of operations. For the last two weeks we have had the privilege of working with a computer program that connects with Finch Robots. We are using them to do a series of activities. For the last two weeks the fifth grade has partnered up with kindergarten through fourth grade teaching them how to computer program using the Finch Robots. We are very excited that we have this opportunity.

We have settled in and with the first month of school under way, we are off to a GREAT start!!! The Bobcats third graders are in the 1

st Unit of CKLA, Classic Tales. While the Listening and

Learning domain focuses on a single classic tale, The Wind in the Willows, the Unit 1 Reader offers students the opportunity to read selections from two different classic tales, Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. During the next few weeks our 3

rd grade math class will be learning to Use Properties to Add More

Than Two Addends, (Associative), Use the Break Apart Strategy to Add 3-Digit Numbers, and Use Place Value to Add 3-digit Numbers and Estimate Differences Using Compatible Numbers and Rounding to Estimate the Difference. Expect to see homework that provides practice with adding and subtracting numbers as well as estimating sums and differences. 4

th graders are on Lesson 13 of CKLA and are working on their own Personal Narrative after

having read three~ the last of which is “Food From the Outside.” 4

th graders will learn how to rename numbers by regrouping, Add and Subtract Whole Numbers

and Determine Reasonableness of Solution, and Use the Strategy Draw a Diagram to solve Comparison Problems. Expect to see homework that provides practice with naming numbers in different ways, as well as, rounding and estimating greater numbers. You will be hearing more of our escapades in learning as we go. Please keep in mind that by working together we accomplish more and if you have any questions, I am available daily until 4 PM.

For all those parents who value helping their child (children) to learn...Read this Announcement!

Improving Student Performance Through Engagement

When schools and parents work together, children learn.

Academy Adventures Midtown is partnering with Covalent Leadership LLC to coordinate the delivery of weekly text messages. These texts messages are designed to provide parents with the information they need to reinforce the real-time learning taking place in the classroom. At the beginning of every week, parents will receive a series of text

messages asking them to target a very specify skill. At the end of every week, parents will receive a text message asking

them to provide weekly feedback regarding their children's perfor-mance at home.

Through the use of technology, text messages, and improved engage-ment with parents on a weekly basis outlining strategic parental engage-ment, we will build a dynamic learning community for our children. We look forward to working with each and every one of you on this initia-tive.

Together, we will make a difference!

If you have not already done so, please complete the form on the back of this announcement and return it to the school ASAP. Thank you, Mr. Jack and Staff
