CAMPERDOWN COLLEGE NEWSLETTER Term 2, Week 6, 24th May 2018
Camperdown
It has been a busy week at Camperdown College as we celebrated State Education Week –Celebrating the Arts.
Students have participated in National Simultaneous Storytime, extra art and dance classes throughout the week, as well as having the opportunity at lunchtime to join in dance and weaving wheel activities.
On Tuesday morning the Junior Campus opened their doors to parents, grandparents and special people and what an amazing response we had! The place was teeming with people as they made their way their way around the classrooms to see their children working.

Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
Education Week 2018 is drawing to a
close and we can reflect on a wonderful
program of Celebrating the Arts and
welcoming visitors into our school.
Our rooms and buildings have been
bursting at the seams as parents,
friends, neighbours, grandparents,
kindergarten families, Year 6 students
and parents have toured the respective
campuses and enjoyed the activities
and facilities on offer at Camperdown College.
Thank you and congratulations to our Prep and Year 7
students who have acted as hosts and role models for our
younger visitors, both at Tuesday’s Year 7 Information
Evening and Thursday’s Prep Open Morning. It has been a
great privilege for myself and our Assistant Principals Clare
Monk and Vicki Angus to meet with prospective students and
families this week and we look forward to further
opportunities during the Junior and Senior Campus transition
programs. Our teachers and Education Support staff work
tirelessly to create rich learning opportunities for our students
and they have also had the pleasure this week of sharing and
showcasing this work.
On Tuesday night I spoke about our students as fine
ambassadors of the College, and the positive feedback I
regularly receive about their conduct within and beyond the
school. May has been a particularly busy month for extra-
curricular activities and our students continue to earn the
praise and high regard of those who host them on excursions
or visit the school as speakers or special guests. Our students’
good manners and friendliness, their acceptance of others
and of new experiences and ideas, all regularly attract
positive attention and I am always very proud to receive this
feedback which our students well deserve.
Last Thursday marked the official
opening of our Corangamite Trade
Training Cluster, with the ceremony
taking place at the Cobden Technical
School Campus. We were fortunate to
have the Honourable Dan Tehan,
Member for Wannon and Minister for
Social Services, present to acknowledge
the significance of the occasion and
declare the facilities open.
The shared delivery model means our students continue to
enjoy the benefits of a full-time enrolment at Camperdown
College while accessing vocational training courses on a
specified day each week, here in the Corangamite Shire.
Already we have students undertaking VETiS certificates in
in Hospitality, Engineering, Building and Construction,
Electro-technology and Automotive at the Timboon and
Cobden campuses of the CTTC. These courses, undertaken
on a Thursday, complement the student’s Year 10, 11 or 12
core program here at Camperdown College and contribute to
the successful completion of the senior years of schooling.
Our current Year 9 students will soon have the opportunity
to learn about the range of certificates on offer, to assist with
their future pathways planning.

P.A.R.T.Y Program:
Teenagers are at more risk of becoming a victim of trauma than any other age group. Unsafe driving, drinking
and other risky behaviours increase the chance that teenagers or their friends will be killed or injured in a
traumatic incident (car accident, fall, assault). Twenty Year 10 – 12 students had the privilege of participating
in the P.A.R.T.Y Program conducted at the Royal Melbourne Hospital last Thursday which aims to help
teenagers understand risks, choices and consequences.
The students learnt about risk and consequence by following the journey of a trauma patient through visiting
the Emergency Department, Intensive Care, ward and rehabilitation centre. Students heard from a guest
speaker who experienced a major head trauma and developed an acquired brain injury as a result. The students
really engaged in the day and whilst confronting at time they all acted in a very mature manner. Feedback from
hospital staff was very affirming about our students.
Little Fire:
Students had the pleasure of listening to Little Fire (also known as Jamie McGeechan)
perform last week. Jamie was in Camperdown to perform at the Robert Burns Scottish
Festival and entertained the students with two songs and then chatted to them after his
performance (pictured right).
9/10 Excursion to Ballarat Art Gallery:
Year 9/10 students experienced a day at the Ballarat Art Gallery where they analysed the painting of Eugene Von Guerad who painted
local landscapes around 1830 – 1850. In groups students analysed the art techniques used, the impact of colonisation and change over
time.
Year 11 Biology Excursion:
Year 11 Biology students travelled by train to Melbourne on Tuesday. They visited the zoo to complete course work on how animals
adapt in order to survive. Thanks to Ms Crowle for organising and accompanying the students.
Project Rockit:
Along with 600 other students, our Year 7/8’s attended a presentation around cyber bullying
entitled Project Rockit at Emmanuel College in Warrnambool on Monday. The students joined
together to learn the message of how to become part of the solution and not the problem when
it comes to cyber bullying. With GREAT power, comes GREAT responsibility – Spiderman.
Interschool Cross Country Carnival:
Congratulations to all students who represented the College at the Interschool Cross Country Carnival recently. It was wonderful to
see so many students involved resulting in our school placing third overall in the competition. Well done to Riley Helmore, Charlie
Tickner and Declan Tickner who won their age group and who will, along with nineteen other students from the College, represent the
region at the next level in Warrnambool next Friday. We wish all the competitors the very best as they compete at Deakin University.
End of Semester Exams:
Exams have been prepared for all students in Year 10 and 11. Students have placed the times and dates for each examination in their
organisers. They have been reminded that if they cannot attend an exam that they must produce a medical certificate. The Year 10/11
exam timetable is:

time. Students will have a late lunch after the GAT and attend Periods 5/6 as normal. An information session on how approach the
GAT will be held beforehand so that students can pick up the tricks on answering the multiple choice questions and gain an insight on
how to respond to the extended pieces
Intermediate/Senior Football and Netball:
Senior students had an enjoyable day out in wet conditions on Tuesday competing against students from other schools in netball and
football. The intermediate netball team coached by Year 11 student Annabel Lucas won all three games and lost to MRC in the final.
The senior football team, coached by Warren Attrill performed very well and managed to make the most of many scoring
opportunities.
Year 7 Information Evening:
The majority of Year 7 students and a number of volunteers from other year levels enjoyed showcasing all that Camperdown College
has to offer at the Year 7 Information Evening early this week. School Captains Lauren and Ethan opened the evening and introduced
the leadership team and Ms Kilpatrick. After a short information session which concluded with a film where current Year 7 students
spoke about what they like in Year 7, the guests were able to roam throughout the campus and complete a range of activities. At each
activity the students received a wooden cut out. After collecting all ten cut outs the students assembled in the Wood Technology room
to assemble their prize – a pencil holder in the form of a French bulldog. To conclude the evening, supper was served by a number of
students who had worked throughout the past week to bake a range of goodies. Thanks must go to all staff and students for working to
make this a most successful evening.
Vicki Angus, Senior Campus Assistant Principal
…Continued from page 1:
Our instrumental music students performed for the crowd under the direction of teacher, Fiona Pugh and Year
1/2 dance students danced up a storm performing a rap dance of the Three Little Pigs. It was wonderful to
conclude our morning, sharing a special morning tea with our guests. Students attend school to be literate,
numerous, curious and caring and it was obvious from the support we received that they do so with the care of
their families and teachers. Today we also opened up our Prep classrooms to prospective 2019 students and
their parents, with kinder students joining in a literacy session with our current preps, while their parents toured
our school. Thank you to Dayle Smithwick, Julie Nelson and Leanne Coates for coordinating our wonderful
week.
NAPLAN:
Congratulations to all our Year 3 and 5 students for the manner in which they completed NAPLAN testing last week. As one of the
supervisors of the testing, it was fabulous to watch students give 100% effort as they worked their way through the questions.
The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents and teachers about a child’s performance in literacy and numeracy.
This information is analysed by teachers to support teaching and learning programs and improve student achievement. NAPLAN
reports are issued in September. At Camperdown College the NAPLAN tests are only one of a number of assessments that are
undertaken throughout the year. A more comprehensive assessment of a student can be made by talking to teachers who are
continually tracking each child’s progress based upon standardised tests, teacher judgements and zoned assessments.
Mother’s Day Breakfast/Stall:
Congratulations and thanks to our dedicated Parents & Friends Association for organising a fabulous Mother’s Day Breakfast and
Stall last week. The students were very excited about sharing breakfast with their mum’s and also having the opportunity of
purchasing a gift for their Mum or the special carer in their life.
District Cross Country:
Congratulations to our Cross Country team who competed at the District Cross Country Carnival in Noorat last Monday. They
competed against other students from Simpson, Timboon, Terang, Noorat, Camperdown and Mortlake. Supervising staff reported that
all students competed with enthusiasm, encouraging each other as individuals ran around the course. Well done to Ruby Kempton and
Isaac Winsall who have progressed through to divisional level in Warrnambool at Victoria Park this Friday.
Fun Run:
Next Wednesday, our Prep – Year 2 students will participate in the House Cross Country Fun Run which was postponed earlier this
term. Mr Attrill has mapped out a modified course at the Junior Campus and all parents and friends are welcome to attend. The event
will commence at 11.10am. Students are encouraged to wear their sports uniform with a coloured shirt to indicate their house colours.
Once all students have completed their fun run, it will now be time to finalise and order prizes. Please take the time to complete your
booklets and return them with money raised to the Junior Campus Office by next Friday 1st June. It is imperative that all money is
returned by then as prizes will be ordered by the close of business on this day (therefore no late ones can be accepted).
Special Welcome:
This week we have welcomed another new student to our Camperdown College community! We welcome Chaya Loader to our Year
4 cohort and wish you a long and successful educational journey.
Sporting Schools:
A reminder to parents that is an expectation that students who have registered for this program attend each week. If the circumstances
arises where your child is unable to attend any session, it is vital that you advise the school as soon as possible as we make the
assumption that your child will be there unless notified. As a school we have a ‘duty of care’ to all students enrolled in this program.

The Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth or
P.A.R.T.Y. Program is a dynamic, interactive injury prevention
and health promotion program designed for young people aged
15-25 years. The P.A.R.T.Y. Program is designed to show
participants first hand some of the tragic consequences that can
occur if they participate in risk-taking behaviour, as well as the
choices they can make to avoid trauma and injury.
Camperdown College students from Year 10, 11 and 12 attended
the P.A.R.T.Y. Program on Thursday 17th May which involved a
very early start to the day and saw our students enjoy a full day
excursion to The Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Our students spent a full day with various trauma services,
meeting the people that care for trauma patients – paramedics,
doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and volunteers.
Through DVD and PowerPoint presentations, interviews with
patients and real-life clinical scenarios, our students were exposed
to the painful journey of a trauma patient. They learnt about
trauma injuries, and had hands-on experience with some of the
equipment used in trauma care and rehabilitation.
Camperdown College students also met a trauma injury survivor
who talked about the choices and events that led to their injury
and what their life is like now. Students were given the
opportunity to ask the injury survivor questions and an even
greater insight into what life is really like after an injury.
Feedback from our students was overwhelming positive and has
generated a lot of talk back at school between students and staff in
turn generating a lot of interest from other students in attending
next year should our school be lucky enough to have this amazing
opportunity again.

House Cross Country:
The Camperdown College Senior Campus Cross Country was held
on Tuesday 15th May. An excellent participation rate saw almost the
entire campus population either run or walk 3km or 5km. Age group
champions were:
Nikita Carter and Dylan Robertson (13 year old)
Eve Britton and Declan Tickner (14 year old)
Terran Buckle and Bailey McDonald (15 year old)
Amelia Kempton and Charlie Tickner (16 year old)
Olivia Henzen and Riley Helmore (17 year old)
Ellie Walsh and Ethan Coates (20 year old) HSSSD:
Approximately 50 students then backed
up three days later to complete in the
HSSSD competition. All representatives
did Camperdown College proud with
the school placing 3rd overall.
Three outstanding performances belong
to Charlie Tickner, Declan Tickner and
Riley Helmore who took out their
respective age groups. Nineteen
students have now qualified to compete
at Regional level next Friday 1st June at
Deakin University in Warrnambool.

On Monday 21st May, the Unit 1 Biology class caught
the early train to the Melbourne Zoo. Students observed
and recorded the behaviours and adaptations of a
number of organisms in the zoo, focussing on how
these assisted the animal to survive in its environment.
This information will form part of a fieldwork report
that students must submit as part of their assessment.
Students will also be required to complete worksheets
on population dynamics using data they gathered from
the information boards dotted around the zoo.
After some free time we caught the 5.13pm train back
to Camperdown feeling very weary. Students were
excellently behaved and enjoyed their time looking at
the new exhibits at the zoo.

On Monday 21st May, all Year 9/10 students
were given the opportunity to travel to the
Art Gallery of Ballarat to view an exhibition
displaying the works of Eugene von Guerard.
The students were very fortunate to have all
costs of the excursion covered by a generous
benefactor of the gallery; it was for many
reasons, an opportunity which couldn’t be
missed!
The collection included many of von
Guerard’s sketchbooks and key pieces from
his work in Victoria in the 1850’s. Of note
were pieces relating to Tower Hill and works
commissioned by the Currie family of the
landscapes surrounding Camperdown.
Students were particularly interested with
two paintings depicting a bushfire in the area
from around 1857. Our guide, Kate, shared
with us insights into von Guerard’s process
and motivations, relating the works to our
current work in both Humanities and Art
classrooms. Students also took part in a
‘sketchbook making’ hands-on session,
creating some beautiful and creative
keepsakes.
Unfortunately, many students lamented the
fact we had to be back for the end of the
school day as they were keen to spend more
time exploring the works on display at the
gallery. We cannot recommend the space
more highly – we are sure a weekend trip to
Ballarat would be made richer by a visit to
the Gallery!

Yesterday, we had a Senior Boys Football team
and Intermediate Girls Netball team compete
against other local Hampden schools.
The boys, coached by Warren Attrill, braved tough
wet conditions, to compete in three games,
unfortunately they didn't come away with a win but
fought hard throughout nonetheless.
The girls, coached by Annabel Lucas, had a great
day on court, coming away with three wins and one
loss to finish second overall.
Below is a copy of the netball ladder, we are yet to
receive any official results from the footy.
Intermediate Girls Netball:
1st MRC: 4 wins 0 losses
2nd Camperdown: 3 wins 1 loss
3rd Cobden: 2 wins 2 losses
4th Terang: 1 win 3 losses

While Year 5/6 Inquiry Learning this term has focussed on the gold
rushes of the 1850’s, students were fortunate last week to learn
about how modern gold fossickers go about their hobby. Eric
Grommett and Chris Bodey from the Prospectors and Miners
Association of Victoria visited and demonstrated their equipment
and showed students some of their finds. We learned that it costs a
lot more to buy the equipment than what most people ever find in
gold, but they do it because it is an enjoyable hobby. They showed
us some small gold nuggets they had found as well as a large
collection of interesting artefacts including old coins and a large
belt buckle. The visit concluded with a coin hunt in the sandpit at
lunchtime which was enthusiastically taken up by students of all
ages.
The picture shows students holding a plaster model of The Hand of
Faith nugget. This 27kg nugget was found in central Victoria in
1980 and is the largest nugget ever found using a metal detector.
