The State Capitol is closed to tours through 2017 due to renovations. We plan to be back in Grand Rapids by the normal bus loading times on Friday, May 15th. You can either pick your child up at the normal end of day time or have them ride their normal bus route home. As our trip approaches please take a moment to read over this letter and the attached items. We hope this information is helpful and answers many of your questions. Buses will load at 7:45am depart from the school at 8:00am on Thursday, May 14th. For more information see “schedule” on page 4.

Please note the load and leave time above. If your child normally arrives after that time they will need to line up transportation to school for the day. Unfortunately we will not be waiting for anyone. We load and leave at the times listed.

Students should enter the building through the normal front doors and go directly to their classrooms. Classrooms will walk out together and load the buses.

We will go to Edinborough Park, the Como Park Zoo, and then the Science Museum. We’ll eat lunch at the Edinborough (see note below on lunches). The State Capitol is closed to tours through 2017 due to renovations.

We plan to be back in Grand Rapids by the normal bus loading times

on Friday, May 15th. You can either pick your child up at the

Kids will need to bring a bag lunch for the ride down and snacks for the ride back.

Make sure to pick items that will not need to be left in a fridge (we won’t have one). Preferably healthy and nutritious snacks so the kids aren’t hungry right after eating.

There is an optional Science Museum Parent Field Trip meeting on Thursday, May 7th at 3:00 at Murphy School (immediately following parent pick­up).

Please read the included letter from our school nurse noting that students are not to carry any pills, even over the counter (on Page 3).

Read over the reminder from the museum on what to bring (starting on page 4).

We have approximately 80 students and 25 adults attending. Although kids can bring gadgets on the bus ride, they can not bring them

into the museum. All items will be collected when we arrive and locked up. The

school and staff are not responsible for these items. I would get my child travel games and/or books for the ride. Again this is your choice to send items, please realize that just like a normal school day, staff are not responsible for these items. I plan to bring some decks of cards, books, magazines, and travel activities.

Kids can bring cameras, however we have enough adults bringing cameras and we plan to share pictures. If your child is going to bring a camera please discuss with them how to appropriately take pictures (asking the subject if they can take their picture). For devices that have a camera such as a Nintendo DS, although they have a camera, they aren’t meant to take pictures that would be printed and shared therefore they aren’t allowed in the museum.

Kids can bring money for the gift shops (Museum and Zoo), however, kids are responsible for their money, not staff.

May 5, 2015 To: Parents of 4th Graders From: Glenda Matteson, Murphy School Nurse Topic: Field Trip to Cities Dear Parents, We are planning for your child’s overnight trip to the Cities on May 14th & 15th. Many students take medications at home, and some do at school. We are planning to meet these kids’ needs in the following ways. If your child takes medication at school on a daily basis, or if the school has emergency medication (such as an inhaler) in the nursing office, you do not need to do anything special. The medications and instructions will be sent and dispensed as needed by Mr. Martinson. If your child takes medication at home which you would like to have given to him or her on the trip, please provide the medication to the School Nurse in a labeled and sealed package (such as a plastic bag or envelope) along with a note with clear instructions about times to be given and your signature. Please provide these medications to the School Nurse by Tuesday, May 12th. Please note that our policy is that no medications, even over­the­counter medications such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen, are to be carried by students. All medications will be protected and dispensed by Mr. Martinson. Every effort will be made to protect your child’s privacy in regard to dispensing medications on the trip. Camp-In Program: Policies and Procedures 2014-15 School / Organizational

Thursday-Friday Camp-In (W/Dinner) 2015 is the Year of Space! It is now time to get ready for your outrageous overnight adventure. Please take time to read through this information carefully and save it to bring with you to your Camp-In at the Science Museum of Minnesota. By following these guidelines, you are sure to make your Camp-In experience as fun and safe as possible. Call (651) 221-4511 if you have any questions. Essentials to Bring: A camper’s checklist

____One large bag: pack your gear in a garbage, laundry, or duffel bag labeled with your name and group name. Gear should be marked to minimize the loss of items. Please pack lightly; storage space is limited. ____Sleeping gear: an indoor sleeping bag or bed roll. **Please note** you will be sleeping on hard floors (see “options” for padding guidelines.) ____Comfortable clothes: layering your clothing is recommended. Keep in mind that both men and women attend Camp-Ins. Also, the Camp-In Team is comprised of men and women. This is a camping experience; we encourage participants to sleep in their clothes. ____Comfortable shoes: shoes must be worn at all times (except while sleeping). You will be doing a lot of walking…make sure your shoes are well-broken in. ____Personal items: pillow, toothbrush, toothpaste, small towel and washcloth, face soap, and other essentials. No shower is available. Options:

x Foam-sleeping pads or small air matresses are highly recommended, as the sleeping area is not fully carpeted. You must provide your own sleeping pad or air mattress. Due to space and safety limitations, high cots or large air beds cannot be accommodated.

x Simple games to share during quiet time (10:00 p.m.–11:00 p.m.). x Extra money for snacks or souvenirs. x There are vending machines and a museum shop within the museum. Participants may

purchase items during scheduled free time. ** Please do not bring large inflatable beds, hair dryers, flashlights, personal stereos, video games, laptop computers, CDs, curling irons, or other electrical devices** Special Needs If someone in your group has special needs, contact the Camp-In Program at (651) 221-4511 as soon as possible. We will make every reasonable attempt to accommodate you. Any camper with special dietary requirements can bring their own food for meals and/or snacks if they would like. Refrigeration for special food and medical supplies is available.

Dinner, Snack, and Breakfast Information A Pizza Dinner Buffet is provided as part of this Camp-In experience. The dinner includes a variety of pizzas (including vegetarian), salad, fresh fruit, cookies, and drink. Our Camp-In Healthy Snack Smorgasbord continues to be a SMM tradition! We place out a variety of healthy snacks in a “snack smorgasbord”, for everyone to enjoy. Our Camp-In breakfast is a bountiful buffet, featuring muffins, bagels, sweet rolls, fresh fruit, milk, and juice. A great way to start the next day’s activities! Museum Policies and Behavior Guidelines Please discuss museum policies and behavior guidelines with your group before the Camp-In event. Parents and chaperones are responsible for supervising youth at all times. Camp-In Behavior Guidelines

x Food and drink are not allowed in the exhibit halls, the Auditorium, the Science Live Theater, the Atrium Stage, or the Omnitheater.

x Smoking is prohibited - The museum is a smoke-free building. x Please walk at all times in the museum. x Show respect for the museum by not littering or defacing property and by keeping the

spaces used clean. During sleeping hours, no one should be using any exhibit equipment. Please stay off the exhibit hall components!

x Follow the fire code discussed during the Welcome Show. Safety Policies and Museum Accommodations Safety Policies

x The Camp-In program is required to meet fire and emergency standards. A safety demonstration on evacuation and emergency procedures is given to all participants.

x A museum engineer, VRS (Visitor Relations and Security), and the Camp-In Team are present throughout the night to handle any emergencies that may arise. Overnight staff are trained in CPR, first aid, and emergency exit procedures.

x Never call 911 when you are at the museum! With so many entrances, emergency staff will not know where/how to enter the building. ALWAYS contact museum VRS or the Camp-In Team and they will coordinate any emergency response.

x Museum staff is available to you during your visit to offer directions, answer questions, and to radio the Camp-In team members should you require immediate assistance. You will recognize museum staff by their colored shirts and museum badges.

x Large print brochures, catalogs, publications, and film scripts are available on request. Sign language interpreters also are available for the Camp-In program with 5 days notice. Call (651) 221-9406 or TDD (651) 221-4585 to discuss your access needs. Please inform the Camp-In Team of any arrangements made.

Office. Lockers cost .50 cents to $1.00 depending on size. Small items that you need access to while in the exhibits can be placed in these lockers.

x Lost and Found: Label all gear with group and individual names to minimize lost items. Items left behind are given to museum operations the Monday following each Camp-In event.

x Call (651) 221-9406 and ask for lost and found. Lost or stolen items are not the responsibility of the Science Museum.

Parent/Chaperone Information Arrival time Plan to arrive with your campers between 3:00-4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. Please arrive at your scheduled time. Campers will not be admitted prior to 3:00 p.m., unless prior arrangements have been made. Plan to arrive and depart from the museum as a full group. Youth should not arrive unsupervised. The museum is not responsible for youth who are dropped off for the Camp-In program without supervision. Parent/Chaperone’s Responsibilities

x Check-in at the Education Commons entrance at 120 West Kellogg, Level 2 to obtain an event packet and further information.

x Deposit gear in designated areas. x Supply a complete, updated listing of adults and children participating in the Camp-In.

Each Camp-In is planned for a specific age and gender; please do not substitute unregistered children. This policy includes babies.

x Adults must stay with your campers at all times. x Plan to stay in the museum throughout the Camp-In event. It is important that you

remain in the building with your campers. x Remain with campers in designated sleeping areas between 10:00 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. (Please show respect for others by keeping your group quiet from 10:30 p.m. until 6:30 a.m.) x Be a role model for your campers

and others.

Important Information for Parents/Guardians

Emergency Procedures: Contacting Your Child 1. Before you call, have the following information ready: name of camper, name of

chaperone, and/or name of organization (if appropriate). 2. Call the emergency Camp-In cell phone number @ (651) 485-0484. A Camp-In Team

member carries the cell phone with them 30 minutes before each Camp-In event, during the event, and until 30 minutes after each event.

3. Wait for your call to be returned. If your call is not returned within 15 minutes, call (651) 253-9583 for Security / VRS, 24-hours a day.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION Space: An Out-of-Gravity Experience Opens February 20, 2015 What lies ahead for human space flight? And what does it mean for life on Earth? Space: An Out-of Gravity Experience is a hands-on, bodies-on exhibition that invites you to explore the extraordinary conditions of human space exploration and discover the science that makes it successful.

The special exhibit IS NOT part of your Camp-In Experience. You can add a visit to SPACE by calling Kate at (651) 221-4511. Arrangements can be made to see the exhibit during the

Camp-In event. The special pre-purchase cost is $5 per youth or adult. The deadline to purchase tickets in this way is May 11th! You can purchase tickets on the day of your Camp-In, but you will need to first check-in and then wait in line at the Box Office to purchase your exhibit tickets at REGULAR RATES. Remember - you can use your 2015 Camp-In Patch to

get into the general museum for FREE during 2015! Therefore, to see SPACE during a future visit, all you have to do is pay the special exhibition up-charge. If you have any questions about the patch or the special exhibition, please call Doug at (651) 221-4553.
