7Year abroad 2018-2019

Coucou tout le monde! My name is Baaba Jenkins, a final year student pursuing a combined

major in political science and French. My year spent abroad in Nantes will probably remain

the best decision I ever made.

Before year abroad, French was that language I could only read and write. I mean I could

say a few basic things to convince my parents that I wasn't wasting my school fees but who

was I deceiving? Listening to RFI gave me headaches because I had to listen for at least 10

minutes before understanding one word, two or three if I was lucky.

Fast forward to the actual year abroad. I realized that just being surrounded by French wasn't

enough to speak the French. It entailed much more and coming back the same was not an

option for me. So I joined a student association where I made French friends, I volunteered

with an NGO, I listened to RFI every single day, watched Korean series with French

subtitles, read confessions of a shopaholic in French. I put myself in situations that forced

me to speak French so I could gain confidence.

As time went on there were many indicators of progress; not only was I effortlessly listening

to the news, i actually had favorite programs on RFI like couleurs tropicales. I was even able

to watch the presidential debate between Marie Le Pen and Macron, and the best part was I

understood! In the beginning, while volunteering for the student shop, I found it very

difficult to communicate with the customers, but I was soon cracking jokes in French. I

honestly surprised myself when I started thinking in French. By the end of my stay I had

given testimonies in church, I was in the praise team (singing French songs) and I could

even pray in French. (In front of the congregation) My crowning moment was when I met

my level 100 TAs in Paris and they recommended my remarkable progress because they had

been there when it all began. I can now boldly and proudly say that I am bilingual and that I

am currently reading a John Grisham book in French, for fun. ;)

What’s your goal for going for the year abroad?

“My year spent abroad in Nantes will probably remain the best decision I ever made”
