Leadership Letter

I love to travel but oftentimes the worst part of a journey is the very endWhy is it that I can tolerate even a 10-12 flight but a moment aftertouchdown I canrsquot wait to get off the plane and get home I think the end ofa school year can feel the same waymdashitrsquos hard to wait to get the last projectturned in or the last paper graded or the last celebration completed Isuppose that may be human nature and it is part of the trick of April andMay when working in higher education

But as we all come to the close of the 2018-2019 I think itrsquos also important to look back on allthat wersquove accomplished this year And perhaps as we have faced so much change it iseven more important to note this yearrsquos achievements Itrsquos a dangerous task to list a set ofhighlights because Irsquom sure Irsquoll miss some really important ones but in the spirit of adventurehere are just a few of the many accomplishments from 2018-19 that should make us allUMNProud

bullThe University of Minnesota Crookston serves the highest proportions of first-generationcollege students Pell-eligible students students from greater Minnesota and non-traditionaladult learners in the University of Minnesota System

bullFor the 22nd consecutive year US News amp World Report ranked UMN Crookston as a top3 Public Regional Campus The Washington Monthly ranked us 85 among its TopBaccalaureate Colleges in the US (the only Minnesota college in the top 100) and MoneyMagazinersquos value rankings placed us second among public universities in Minnesota and inthe top 26 among the more than 200 public and private colleges and universities in theseven-state region (IA IL MN ND NE SD amp WI)

bullUMN Crookstonrsquos average loan debt of graduates is just $24432 more than $6000 lessthan the average for the state of Minnesota

bullThe Department of Liberal Arts and Education received Full Institutional ContinuousApproval for Teacher Education and the Health Management Services program became oneof just two online programs to secure accreditation from the National Association of LongTerm Care Administrator Boards (NAB)

bullThe placement rate for UMN pre-veterinary majors into veterinary graduate programs isnearly four times the national average

bullUMN Crookston offers the only aviation program in the country that focuses on agriculturenatural resources and law enforcement



bullWe opened the new Center for Collaborative Research (CCR) in August and plans arecurrently underway for renovating teaching labs and adding a new research lab in Owen Hall

bullWe consolidated the departments of admissions financial aid and international recruitmentinto a new Department of Enrollment Management New initiatives include spring admit dayscollege exploration days and data-informed recruiting Looking to the fall UMN Crookstonwill be the first campus in the system shift to test-optional holistic review and the first toimplement fully the Slate customer management tool

bullMenrsquos basketball team set a school record for most wins in a season and made their firstappearance in the quarterfinals of the NSIC tournament Womenrsquos softball also set a recordfor the most wins in a season and baseball could set a new record for wins later this weekThis yearrsquos baseball team has already earned a spot in the NSIC tournament for the thirdtime in the past four years The Hunt Seat Team advanced to the IHSA Zone 7 Hunter SeatChampionships and Selena Young is advancing to nationals this week bullFor the fall student-athletes earned a collective 308 GPA Twelve student-athletes werenamed to 2018-19 NSIC Winter All-Academic Team seven football Players were named tothe National Footbal Foundation Hampshire Honor Society and Chase Knickerbocker andCaitlin Michaelis each earned NSIC honor student athlete awards

bullA pair first-year experience courses were designed and adopted by the faculty forimplementation with all first-year on-campus students beginning in Fall 2019 Paired with therollout of these courses will be new advising and student support programs aimed atincreasing student success and preparing students for a rigorous collegiate education

bullThe inaugural Farm to Table dinner celebrated northern Minnesota grown foods inNovember 2018 One of the highlights of the dinner was vintage and select wines fromFantesca Estate and Winery located in Napa Valley CA along with choice meats raised byProtein Alliance in Alexandria MN

bullWe made difficult campus-wide reorganizations both in and outside academics that willlead to annual budget savings of more than $750000 In response to our strong internalwork the University of Minnesota System has given strong indication that they will fundrequests that we have made for 2019-2020 to help launch new sports as a means of growingenrollment

bullUMN Crookston broke Iowa State Universityrsquos four-year hold on the North American Collegeand Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Student Judging Conference Sweepstakes by bringinghome the traveling trophy in April bullUMN Crookston Sustainability conducted over 25programs and multiple presentations funded 3 student projects and provided matching fundsfor a Sustainable Art Grant developed numerous sets of promotional materials and engagedin collaborative projects with Polk County and the City of Crookston

bullThe Crookston Student Association led initiative for including laundry in housing fees



eliminating online course fees when on-campus students are required to take an onlinecourse remodeled the their leadership space and contributed efforts to revise severalcampus policies

bullUMN Crookstonrsquos 2019 United Way campaign raised $13773

bullUMN Crookston sent five students to compete in the Harvard case study competitionmdashas inpast years Crookston was the only campus in the system to send students to compete

bullFaculty scholarly productivity continues to be high Twenty-five faculty members participatedin the inaugural Faculty Research Fair in which they shared posters and presentationsrelated to their recent scholarship

bullWhile we do not yet have a mechanism to track publications many of our faculty memberspublished scholarly books book chapters and refereed journal articles while many otherspresented at scholarly conferences

bullDr Eric Castle Dr Shari Daniels Dr George French and Dr Rob Proulx each successfullydefended their dissertations and earned their doctoral degrees

bullSeveral faculty members also received awards this year Rutherford Johnson was awardedthe US Presidents Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteer service Sameer Abufardehrsquoscybersecurity research was featured in a presentation to the University of Minnesota Board ofRegents James Foss was accepted into the Minnesota TeachingWorks Fellowship programAssociate Professor George French won the Northwest Star Award and Professor RachelMcCoppin was named the recipient of the 2019-2020 Imagine Fund Annual Award

bullUMN Crookston made significant strides in increasing its media profile with the Grand ForksHerald as well as with region and statewide media outlets bullUMN Crookston students Trevor Long Kaitlin Sikkink and Michaela Lano traveled to theNational Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at Kennesaw State University inGeorgia to present their research on freshwater sponges

bullThe Alumni Relations and Development Office had great successes this year with a ribbon-cutting for the new baseball press box the completion of the Indoor Golf Practice Facility(special thanks to work by Ben Koisti) the addition of new donor planned gifts and academicscholarship endowments a first-ever commitment to support international students and thelaunch of the Lysaker Gymnasium fundraising project Additionally this was a banner year forthe UMC Teambacker organization supporting Golden Eagle athletics projects andscholarships

bullKelsey Torgerson Josh Parrill and Allison Haas presented at the Higher LearningCommission annual conference regarding their work with tutoring services for onlinestudents



bullUMN Crookstonrsquos Community band and Choir presented two concerts and will play again forcommencement The choir provided a half dozen addition performances at the university andin the community The Jazz Band performed at the Greenway Takeover festival in GrandForks and the Golden Eagle Pep Band play at 23 athletic events including the MensBasketball Tournament game in Sioux Falls SD

bullUMN Crookstonrsquos fine arts department successfully produced the musical A Year of Frogand Toad and the murder-mystery The Mousetrap

bull237 students earned a place on the Fall 2018 Deanrsquos list with fall GPAs of 366 or higherand over 100 were named to the Chancellorrsquos list for earning a perfect 40

bullOn Wednesday this week UMN Crookston will announce acceptance into an competitionrecognition program for our successful work with first-generation college students (moreinformation to come tomorrow) As on highlight over the past three years retention ratesfrom the first to the second year of college for UMN Crookston first-generation collegestudents mirror those of their peers and the six-year graduation rate gap is less than 3

bullAnd as the crown jewel of it all 132 UMN Crookston students graduated this past fall andanother 221 will join them this spring With the additional 66 who have applied for graduationthis summer that will bring us to a total of 419 new UMN Crookston Alumni

This is an amazing list of accomplishments (are you tired of scrolling down yet) And I didnot include information about honors programs increased visibility of the library multiculturalprograms active clubs and organizations residence life programs restructuring the WellnessCenter Health Services programs or international programs and study abroad I did notmention each of our majors or academic programs our College in the High School or PSEOprograms our Early Childhood Development Center our campus facilities or collaborationswith the City of Crookston and local schools Therersquos so much more to share but what all ofthese accomplishments have in common are great people who are committed to studentsand student success So as we all end the journey of the 2018-19 school year and preparefor a well-deserved break I invite each of you to take a moment to celebrate ouraccomplishments and the people who made them happen
