I love to travel but oftentimes the worst part of a journey is the very endWhy is it that I can tolerate even a 10-12 flight but a moment aftertouchdown I canrsquot wait to get off the plane and get home I think the end ofa school year can feel the same waymdashitrsquos hard to wait to get the last projectturned in or the last paper graded or the last celebration completed Isuppose that may be human nature and it is part of the trick of April andMay when working in higher education

But as we all come to the close of the 2018-2019 I think itrsquos also important to look back on allthat wersquove accomplished this year And perhaps as we have faced so much change it iseven more important to note this yearrsquos achievements Itrsquos a dangerous task to list a set ofhighlights because Irsquom sure Irsquoll miss some really important ones but in the spirit of adventurehere are just a few of the many accomplishments from 2018-19 that should make us allUMNProud

bullThe University of Minnesota Crookston serves the highest proportions of first-generationcollege students Pell-eligible students students from greater Minnesota and non-traditionaladult learners in the University of Minnesota System

bullFor the 22nd consecutive year US News amp World Report ranked UMN Crookston as a top3 Public Regional Campus The Washington Monthly ranked us 85 among its TopBaccalaureate Colleges in the US (the only Minnesota college in the top 100) and MoneyMagazinersquos value rankings placed us second among public universities in Minnesota and inthe top 26 among the more than 200 public and private colleges and universities in theseven-state region (IA IL MN ND NE SD amp WI)

This is an amazing list of accomplishments (are you tired of scrolling down yet) And I didnot include information about honors programs increased visibility of the library multiculturalprograms active clubs and organizations residence life programs restructuring the WellnessCenter Health Services programs or international programs and study abroad I did notmention each of our majors or academic programs our College in the High School or PSEOprograms our Early Childhood Development Center our campus facilities or collaborationswith the City of Crookston and local schools Therersquos so much more to share but what all ofthese accomplishments have in common are great people who are committed to studentsand student success So as we all end the journey of the 2018-19 school year and preparefor a well-deserved break I invite each of you to take a moment to celebrate ouraccomplishments and the people who made them happen

bullAnd as the crown jewel of it all 132 UMN Crookston students graduated this past fall andanother 221 will join them this spring With the additional 66 who have applied for graduationthis summer that will bring us to a total of 419 new UMN Crookston Alumni

This is an amazing list of accomplishments (are you tired of scrolling down yet) And I didnot include information about honors programs increased visibility of the library multiculturalprograms active clubs and organizations residence life programs restructuring the WellnessCenter Health Services programs or international programs and study abroad I did notmention each of our majors or academic programs our College in the High School or PSEOprograms our Early Childhood Development Center our campus facilities or collaborationswith the City of Crookston and local schools Therersquos so much more to share but what all ofthese accomplishments have in common are great people who are committed to studentsand student success So as we all end the journey of the 2018-19 school year and preparefor a well-deserved break I invite each of you to take a moment to celebrate ouraccomplishments and the people who made them happen

bullUMN Crookstonrsquos Community band and Choir presented two concerts and will play again forcommencement The choir provided a half dozen addition performances at the university andin the community The Jazz Band performed at the Greenway Takeover festival in GrandForks and the Golden Eagle Pep Band play at 23 athletic events including the MensBasketball Tournament game in Sioux Falls SD

bullUMN Crookstonrsquos fine arts department successfully produced the musical A Year of Frogand Toad and the murder-mystery The Mousetrap

bull237 students earned a place on the Fall 2018 Deanrsquos list with fall GPAs of 366 or higherand over 100 were named to the Chancellorrsquos list for earning a perfect 40

bullOn Wednesday this week UMN Crookston will announce acceptance into an competitionrecognition program for our successful work with first-generation college students (moreinformation to come tomorrow) As on highlight over the past three years retention ratesfrom the first to the second year of college for UMN Crookston first-generation collegestudents mirror those of their peers and the six-year graduation rate gap is less than 3

bullAnd as the crown jewel of it all 132 UMN Crookston students graduated this past fall andanother 221 will join them this spring With the additional 66 who have applied for graduationthis summer that will bring us to a total of 419 new UMN Crookston Alumni

This is an amazing list of accomplishments (are you tired of scrolling down yet) And I didnot include information about honors programs increased visibility of the library multiculturalprograms active clubs and organizations residence life programs restructuring the WellnessCenter Health Services programs or international programs and study abroad I did notmention each of our majors or academic programs our College in the High School or PSEOprograms our Early Childhood Development Center our campus facilities or collaborationswith the City of Crookston and local schools Therersquos so much more to share but what all ofthese accomplishments have in common are great people who are committed to studentsand student success So as we all end the journey of the 2018-19 school year and preparefor a well-deserved break I invite each of you to take a moment to celebrate ouraccomplishments and the people who made them happen
