Wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented grapes or other substances. Wines are named after the product from which they are produced.

Wines made from apples are called apple wines or wines made from rice are called rice wines.

Red wine is made from dark-colored grape varieties. It must be noted that the juice extracted from the wine is not red. The actual red color of the wine comes from a pigment present in the skin of the grapes.

Canada produces some of the best red wines of the world. In the following section, we shall look at some of the popular Canadian wines and see the region where they are made.

1. History of Wine Growing in Canada

Canada has a relatively short wine growing history. In the early 1800’s,

attempts were made by European settlers to grow wine using the grapes brought from their native land.

This proved to be a failure, as the grapes could neither withstand the heat and humidity of summers nor the cold harsh winters.

Things, however, started taking a turn for the better with the advent of new wine growing technology and better quality indigenous grapes.

Canada has now become an important wine growing country of the world where some of the best red wines are produced.
