The Need for the Building Envelope to Breathe

Wall breather membranes are an important part of modern wall construction. Proper installation and attention to details can prevent water migration into the building from the exterior.

Breathable barriers in simple rain screen design serve as a secondary drainage layer. Wind blown rainwater drips onto the SRP Wallshield and drains, exiting the building. During construction, the SRP Wallshield acts as a temporary waterproofing membrane, shedding water off the wall. Interior vapor passes through the breather membrane onto the exterior side of the sheet, where it dissipates.

The Product

SRP Wallshield was developed in Scotland after extensive research conducted by the A. Proctor Group and Don & Low Nonwovens. Their combined efforts resulted in the creation of a truly unique product that addresses the many needs of rain screen construction. SRP Wallshield is a 3-ply spun bonded polypropylene fabric that is used as a breathing underlayment for rain screen walls. It is waterproof, U.V. stabilized, rot proof and tear resistant.

SRP Wallshield is frequently used in projects where the lifespan is 100 years or more. The membrane is inert and can be recycled into its original bead form. These beads are then used to manufacture other products.

Secondary Wall MembraneThe primary function of breather barrier products is to keep moisture out of a building. SRP Wallshield is essen-tially a secondary barrier to this moisture. It is an ideal “back-up” product by enhancing the rain screen design of wall construction.

“Dry-in” Waterproofing During ConstructionIn both new construction and retrofit work, timing is a large factor in the process. In new construction, closing in the building to allow interior work to begin sooner is a tremendous advantage. In retrofit work, the ability to remove the entire existing wall assembly at one time provides an enormous cost savings for the project. SRP Wallshield allows this process to happen because once installed, SRP Wallshield keeps the building’s interior dry while construction continues.*

Long-Term Condensation ControlThe concept of a weather resistant barrier may not be new in the construction industry. A product that is able to keep moisture out while still allowing your building to breathe is unique. During construction and after occupancy, moisture enters the wall assembly by various means. SRP Wallshield allows moisture to continue to filter out to the exterior of the building. Trapped moisture can cause wood rot, swelling and distortion of lumber, corrosion of metal, and the reduction in insulation thermal value.

Reduces Risk of Mould and MildewThe subject of mould and mildew is of great importance and concern in the construction industry today. The concept of “sick buildings” is a term that all designers and building owners are aware of and are trying to prevent. Products which do not allow your building to breathe adequately may actually be trapping moisture, which is the primary cause of mould. SRP Wallshield does not restrict the movement of moisture out of the building, and with a perm rating of 212**, is one of the most breathable products in the market today.

Guide Specification

Materials

Breathable membrane underlay for slate, tile, cedar and metal roofing systems:

Triple layer, spun bonded polypropylene, breathable membrane with a nominal weight of 175 g/m2, nomi-nal thickness of 0.6 mm and water vapour transmis-sion 212.8 perms as per ASTM E96-95. SRP-Wall shield Membrane Underlayment as manufactured by A. Proctor Group and represented by SRP Canada Inc. (Phone: 866-533-0233).

InstallationInstall SRP Wallshield under vinyl, cedar, or metal siding material in accordance with the manufacturers’ written instructions. SRP Wallshield should be installed green (or black) side out, laid so that it forms a continuous membrane over the entire wall area.

Staples, roofing nails or screws with plates may be used to fasten SRP Wallshield.

Treat all laps and seams as described in the SRP Wallshield installation guide.

This specification is a guide only and may require editing for the specific intended application. It is recommended that the design professional ensure the accuracy and completeness of the specification issued by contacting SRP Canada Inc.
