TM DR. YUESHU LI, PhD - Director of Malting & Brewing Operations Yueshu joined the CMBTC in 2000 and is the centre’s Director of Malting and Brewing Operations. He has over 25 years of experience in the malting industry in Canada, the United States and China as Research Scientist, R&D Project Manager, Director of Technical Services and General Manager. Yueshu holds a Ph.D. in plant physiology and ecology from the University of Saskatchewan. He oversees the daily operations of the CMBTC’s malt plant and brewery working to optimize the performance of new varieties and new crop Canadian malting barley, providing technical support to members and customers, participating in market development initiatives, overseeing Malt Academy programs and leading all research initiatives. During his career Yueshu has been involved in applied research projects, new product development, setting up QC and R&D labs and malthouse operations as well as marketing. Yueshu is a member of the American Society of Brewing Chemists, a member of Master Brewers Association of the Americas and a member of American Society of Cereal Chemists. He currently serves on the Prairie Grain Recommendation Committee and the Technical Committee of the Western Grain Research Foundation. DR. YUESHU LI, PhD - Director of Malting & Brewing Operations

Yueshu joined the CMBTC in 2000 and is the centre’s Director of Malting and Brewing Operations. He has over 25 years of experience in the malting industry in Canada, the United States and China as Research Scientist, R&D Project Manager, Director of Technical Services and General Manager. Yueshu holds a Ph.D. in plant physiology and ecology from the University of Saskatchewan. During his career Yueshu has been involved in various applied research projects, new product development, setting up QC and R&D Labs and malthouse operation, as well as marketing. Yueshu completed his undergraduate work in China and holds a Ph.D. in plant physiology and ecology from the University of Saskatchewan.

Rose Marie started with the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre in August 2000 tasked with setting up the office administration and accounting systems. Today Rose Marie is responsible for overall office administration which includes accounting, human resources, payroll, secretary functions at Board meetings and many other day-to-day operational activities which ensure the CMBTC runs smoothly. She previously worked in the Administration and Accounting field for over 30 years with Chartered Accountants, developing administration and accounting skills. She has volunteered her spare time at various Community Centres in the City as Secretary and Treasurer.

Andrew Nguyen Malting & Brewing Technical SpecialistAndrew Nguyen has been a Malting & Brewing Technical Specialist with CMBTC since January 2011. He joined CMBTC while obtaining a bachelor’s degree in science with a major in microbiology and a minor in chemistry from the University of Manitoba. Part of his studies included a cooperative work term with CMBTC where he developed his skills. Since then, Andrew has obtained a General Certificate in Brewing from the internationally recognized Institute of Brewing & Distilling and is currently pursuing studies to obtain a Diploma in Brewing. Andrew has brewed 250+ beers and counting.

Aaron Onio Malting & Brewing Technical SpecialistAaron is a Malting and Brewing Technical Specialist at the Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre since April 2014. As part of his studies, he has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Microbiology at the University of Manitoba. As an undergrad co-op student he has worked in both clinical and analytical laboratories; most of this time was spent with CMBTC where he has gained extensive experience in both malting and brewing. Currently at CMBTC, Aaron is in charge of day-to-day operations of the pilot malt house, conducts specific beer analysis and is working towards his General Certificate in Brewing with the Institute of Brewing and Distilling.

Bryce Lodge Malting & Brewing TechnicianBryce graduated from the Faculty of Science at University of Manitoba with a Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology with the Co-op option in October 2014. Bryce has previously spent time at CMBTC as a co-op student as well as been a summer student at Manitoba Hydro throughout his educational career. Prior to coming to CMBTC full time, Bryce worked at ALS Environmental as a lab assistant in the Microbiology section analyzing water samples from throughout Manitoba.

Peter Watts Managing DirectorPeter graduated from International Relations at Laval University with a Masters in Arts degree in 1996. After graduation, Peter worked as a Market Analyst at the Canadian Wheat Board for nine years analyzing global grain markets. Subsequently, he was Director of Market Innovation at Pulse Canada, a position he held from 2005 to 2014, helping Canada’s pulse industry develop new market opportunities. With 18 years of experience in the international agriculture sector, Peter brings skills in agribusiness, marketing, research and strategic planning.

BRYCE LODGE - Malting & Brewing Technician

In his role as Malting & Brewing Technician, Bryce is responsible for daily operations of the CMBTC brewery conducting pilot brewing, filtration and packaging, optimizing malting and brewing performance, product development, beer analysis, and all equipment maintenance. Bryce received his Bachelor of Science degree (BSc.) from the University of Manitoba in microbiology. He initially worked as a co-op student for the CMBTC before starting full time in the fall of 2014.

Peter started with the CMBTC in the summer of 2014. As Managing Director, he oversees the daily operations of the CMBTC including program management, strategic planning, financial oversight and budgeting, member relations, research initiatives as well as communications and marketing. With 18 years of experience in the international agriculture sector, Peter brings skills in agribusiness, marketing, research and strategic planning. Peter graduated with a Masters of Arts degree in International Relations at Laval University.
