The primary objective of this coaching program is to develop coaches through a nationalized program for the Canadian Powerlifting Union. The proposed structure supports the needs of a National Certification Program through a standardized education process that will help coaches lead athletes and teams at Local, Provincial, National and International competitions. There are two streams in the certification program that will promote growth for the sport of powerlifting by providing safe training and competition environments and educate others (sports coaches, teachers and personal trainers) in proper Powerlifting techniques based on the CPU’s standards, ethics and integrity. The Coaching stream is for coaches that want to develop athletes to compete in competitions. The Instructional stream is to teach individuals, personal trainers, and teachers the basics of powerlifting and how to teach beginners to perform the lifts properly in a group training setting. The CPU certification course requires completion of a two-day workshop, applied coaching as well as a competency-based evaluation. Michael Souster of Peak Power Development is the author and developer of the Canadian Powerlifting Union Coaching Certification. This certification will be the standard for coaching requirements for the sport of powerlifting in Canada. Michael is one of the coach developers of the CPU certification program in Alberta. 1. The CPU Powerlifting Workshop (full attendance);

2. The CPU Powerlifting Workbook;

3. The CPU Powerlifting Workshop Exam (Pass - minimum 80%).

Powerlifting is a sport that combines the physical

capabilities of strength, power, explosiveness and flexibility. It involves three competitive movements: the Squat, the

Bench Press and the Deadlift. Competitors are categorized

into divisions based on age, sex and body weight. The highest

combined total weight in these three lifts ranks the competitors in their division. The competitor with the highest total wins the

contest for their division.

Powerlifting Workshop

In order to complete the Powerlifting Workshop: y must attend 100% of the Powerlifting Workshop; y must complete the Coaches Workbook; y must pass the exam with 80%.

Upon completing this Powerlifting Workshop, the participant will be accredited to coach athletes at the local and provincial level.

CPU Certified

Instructor

To be considered a CPU Certified Instructor: y must complete the Powerlifting Workshop, Coaches Workbook & Exam;

y must complete the NCCP MED module and evaluation; y must complete 25 hours of coaching logs (see log sheets); y must be evaluated by Peak Power Sport Development as an

Instructor.

The Instructional stream is to certify individuals such as personal trainers, physical education teachers and coaches from other sports, in the basic powerlifting techniques and educate them on how to teach beginners to perform the lifts properly.

To be considered a CPU Certified Coach: y must complete the Powerlifting Workshop, Coaches Workbook & Exam;

y must complete the NCCP MED y *NCCP Part A - at this time the NCCP Part A component of the certification is only recommended and not required. Please note, once the CPU mandates all coaches to have certification for Nationals, the NCCP Part A will be a requirement of the certification.

y must complete 50 hours of coaching logs (see log sheets); y must be evaluated coaching an athlete at a competition by a

course conductor.

The Coaching stream is for coaches that want to develop athletes to compete in competitions. The CPU Certified Coach accredits the coach to assist athletes in local and provincial and national competitions.

*CPU Advanced

Coach

To be considered a CPU Advanced Coach: y must be a CPU Certified Coach; y must complete a Referee Workshop; y must attend 100% of the Advanced Coach Workshop; y *NCCP Components - at this time the NCCP Components of the certification are only recommended and not required. Please note, once the CPU mandates all coaches to have certification for Nationals, the NCCP Components will be a requirement of the certification.

The CPU Advanced coach certification accredits the coach to represent Canada at international competitions.

*CPU advanced coach program is still being developed and will be released at a later date.

INSTRUCTIONAL STREAM

y Introduce new athletes to the sport of powerlifting and the Canadian Powerlifting Union in a positive, ethical and professional manner

y Instruct athletes in appropriate lifting techniques for the squat, bench press and deadlift

y Train the athletes in using the lifts to achieve other fitness-related goals

y Provide safe and effective feedback on errors and corrections in the three competitive lifts

y Organize and run an effective group training environment

y Provide the necessary information to trainee for entering the competitive forum if they develop an interest in competitive powerlifting

y Identify new athletes with potential for powerlifting

y Introduce new athletes to the sport of powerlifting and the Canadian Powerlifting Union in a positive, ethical and professional manner

y Instruct athletes in appropriate lifting techniques for powerlifting

y Train athletes to prepare for a competition

y Provide safe and effective feedback on errors and corrections in the three competitive lifts

y Educate athletes about the logistics of a competition

y Handle athletes at local, provincial and national competitions

CERTIFICATION PROCESS OPTIONS About the FacilitatorHe has had the opportunity to coach dozens of athletes to gold, silver and bronze medals at the CPU National Championships over the past 20 years.

• Programmed and coached athletes to more than a dozen athletes winning medals at IPF World Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships

• Programmed and coached athletes who received the national lifter of the year awards as well as best lifter awards at various elite meets:

» 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015 Canadian Male Bench Presser of the Year

» 2014 Western Canadian Best Female Lifter of the meet.

» 2014 Canadian Best Female Junior Powerlifter of the Year

» 2015 Best Female Lifter at the North American Championships

» 2016 Best Sub Junior Lifter at the IPF World Powerlifting Championships where he broke all the IPF records in his category (Squat, Bench, Deadlift and Total). This is the first time in IPF history that this feat has been accomplished.

» 2016 Canadian Male Powerlifter of the Year

» 2016 Canadian Female Bench Presser of the Year

Michael has also p r o g r a m m e d and coached Peak Powerlifters to over a dozen World Records, six Commonwealth Records, and over a hundred National Records between the Internat ional P o w e r l i f t i n g Federation.
