Je kent ze wel: de koelkastmagneten, sleutelhangers, shotglaasjes en de “grappige” t-shirts. Souvenirs. Je vindt ze over de hele wereld en ze zien er overal hetzelfde uit. Souvenirs zijn of traditioneel en ouderwets, ieder land heeft immers z’n eigen klomp, kaas of tulp. Of ze zijn afgezaagd en spotgoedkoop, een massaal geproduceerd plastic prul, waarvan alleen naam en afbeelding zijn veranderd. Een goedkope herinnering aan de weggooi-cultuur uit een ver verleden. Het werelderfgoed in Nederland verdient beter. Souvenirs mogen meer tot de verbeelding spreken. Elk souvenir is immers een kleine hommage aan ‘iets’ dat je nergens anders ter wereld kan vinden. Daarom vroeg Erik Kessels, gastcurator UNESCO Werelderfgoed Nederland 2016, 60 studenten van drie opleidingen mee te denken over nieuwe souvenirs voor de tien UNESCO werelderfgoederen in Nederland. Deze zijn uniek in de wereld. Ze vertellen op bijzondere wijze het verhaal van Nederland. Het resultaat vind je hier.

We can’t collect places, countries, or buildings so instead we take a little piece of them with us in the form of souvenirs. Refrigerator magnets, key-chains, shot-glasses, spoons and the ubiquitous “funny” t-shirt; you can find them all over the world and no matter where you are they’re pretty much all the same. Traditional, old-fashioned, kitsch. Clog, windmill, tulip. Every country has their own signature souvenirs but on the whole it’s all much of a muchness; useless, cheap (but overpriced), wholly unoriginal, mass-produced plastic. The same object with a different name and poor quality photo slapped on it. Sentimental value aside they’re nothing more than cheap reminders of the disposable culture that we have become so used to. Dutch World Heritage Sites deserve better. Souvenirs should ignite the imagination. After all, a souvenir should pay homage to something that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. In an attempt to offer an alternative guest curator for UNESCO World Heritage Sites Netherlands, Erik Kessels, asked 60 students from three different disciplines to assist him in creating truly original souvenirs for the ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Netherlands. Just like the sites themselves these souvenirs can’t be found anywhere else in the world. They tell the historical and cultural stories of the Netherlands in an extraordinary way. This cup and saucer was inspired by the design principals of the ‘ideal factory’.
