The history of a Trade Union is a sum total of the experience of the workers to emancipate

themselves from exploitation. Its pages are lled with struggles and sacrices, success and

setbacks. It further portrays vividly the role played by the pioneers who championed the cause

of the working class.

It is the History of the great organisation CANARA BANK EMPLOYEES' UNION that the massive

edice was formed on the bedrock principle of “ Trade Union as we are aware of are the

instruments at the hands of organised sections of the working class people for being effectively

used for social change”. It acts as the unier of the work force. It is the effective instrument of

defence. It is also the ablest organ for advancement.

While so in Canara Bank, the Union came into existence to provide security of service to the

employees. Having seen the efcacy of limited unity for securing monetary gains the employees

of Madras moved with greater awareness for uniting themselves in the entirety to launch the

rst ever strike action in the bank. It was on 30/11/1950 and as a sequel there to not only the

two employees in Madras but all other employees were reinstated. Enthused by their success and

unique achievement, the employees of Madras lost no time in consolidating the gains. Thus our thbeloved CANARA BANK EMPLOYEES' UNION came into existence on 10 May 1951, that day

became the founding day of CANARA BANK EMPLOYEES' UNION, the turning point in the lives of

all the employees of the bank.

Passing through the dormant years, 1957 -1963 turning point was from 1963 at Vijayawada

conference. Yes the Vijayawada conference lifted the Canara Bank Employees' Union from the

morass. There was clarity on issues and the Union moved with new vigour and whether it be

conducting negotiations with the Management whether it be conducting struggles to safe guard

the interest of the employees or whether it be tackling attempts made to disrupt the

organisation, the Canara Bank Employees' Union displayed its outstanding qualities and

capabilities.

SO ALSO AN INSTITUTION AND AN ORGANISATION -

Again in 1974 the XV conference of the Union at Vijayawada proved to be momentous one in the

history of the organisation and union moved further in its heights by emerging more cohesive,

militant and more convinced to carry out the task of ceaselessly striving to unite all sections of

employees under its banner.

Now moving away from the pages of history we all have witnessed participated and baptised in

the conferences at Chennai in the years, mammoth conference of 1980, unparalled conference

of 1985 and Golden Jubilee Year conference of 2002.

After a lapse of 17 years now a massive conference of Canara Bank Employees' Union is once

again taking place at Chennai and it will be creating further glory to our Canara Bank

Employees' Union bringing ever green memories of quality and content of sublime heights.

68 years in the life of a Trade Union represent an eventful period and especially for Canara Bank

Employees' Union it is ever moving towards organisational dominance. It has fullled its basic

role of not only organising the entire employees of the Bank into a trade union but also has

taught them how to secure their rights and privileges.

In its long march of history, the Union has become battle scarred, every success testied the

correctness of its strategy. Every set back enabled the union to review its actions and

consolidated its position. Success did not sway them away from their ideals and set backs did not

dampen their determination to move forward. On the contrary it has steeled them further and

made to realise as to how arduous the role and life of a Trade Union is.

When we recapitulate history, we are fully conscious that history is not mere narration of

events. It reminds us of the past, it spurs us into purposeful activity for the present and it makes

us optimists about the future.

thIn this historical 25 Conference of Canara Bank Employees' Union, the entire Ofce Bearers and

Circle Secretaries of Canara Bank Ofcers' Union are participating as fraternal delegates with

pride and abundant enthusiasm and from here we the members of Canara Bank Ofcers' Union

take a pledge that we shall emerge with determination and strive to ll the pages of our History

also. Only that shall be the tting tribute to the greatest Trade Union movement of the Bank -

CANARA BANK EMPLOYEES' UNION.
