Introduction

Situation: Students in SWA, each year keeps moving and leaves SWA doesn’t have enough students and losing it budget. If this continues, the school is forced to shut down. And that is why my task is to make an advertisement (brochure, commercial, poster, website, blog, etc.) that might make parents from outside interested in having their children schooling in SWA. Since I will be making an advertisement, there are some points that I need really to think about, such as; appearance, style, quality and its purpose.

Time Allowed: 8 weeks

Client: Parents and their children

Unit Question: How does advertising manipulate our action?

Areas of Interaction: Community and Service

Documented evidence:

Your documented evidence is like a diary. You start it when you first start making your design and it doesn't end till you have finished making your product. Takes lots of photos, make notes on any modification and add sketches and diagrams.

AOI

My opinion, the suitable AOI for this for this project is Human Ingenuity, because in order to make this advertisement interesting and appealing to the customers, we need to be as creative as possible so the advertisement is attractive and interesting. It needs to be informative and appropriate as well. That’s why I think Human Ingenuity is the most suitable AOI for the project.

Client interview1) Do you prefer your children to be in a national-plus or international school?

I’ve never tried any of my children to go to an international school before but it would be the best if I try at least to enhance their experience.

2) How much are you willing to pay the school-fee?

Not too expensive, of course but as long the school has a good education and the teachers have a good way to educate their students, as well.

3) How do you want your children to study?

I would like the teachers explain the subject throughly and give the children homework so they can repeat what they had learnt.

4) Would you like to have only Indonesian students?

No. If there’s only Indonesian students, my children will speak Bahasa Indonesia and they can’t improve their English or other languages they learn in school.

5) Which location do you want the school to be?

I want the school to be somewhere around BSD or any places that don’t have much traffic.

6) Do you agree to have your children studying by the help of computers?

It is alright if they use the computers with full responsibility and I think it helps them if they need to find something on internet. As l said, as long as they use it responsibly.

Client Interview Summary

So based on what the client said, she wants their children to go to school around BSD or any other location that don’t have much traffic lights occur. I also found out the client is interested to try have their children to go to school in an international school to enhance their experience. But she is concerned about the school-fee. As long she thinks that the very school has both good education and the teachers have a good way to educate, she does not have a problem towards it. Not only she wants the teacher has a good way to educate their students, the client wants the teachers to explain the subject really throughly so every students can understand what they are learning in that very class and she added, the teachers should also give the students homework to repeat what they had learnt in school. In order to improve their children’ languages, she thinks it would be the best if there are students that have different nationalities so their children can improve or even learn different language or they won’t improve their languages. On the last question that I asked her, she agreed on her children to use computers if they have full-responsibility towards the computers. The children need to know when is the appropriate time to play and study with the help of the computer.

SpecificationTitle Specification and Why? Test

Material

It depends. If I decide to make the advertisement as a poster or newsletter, the material is going to be papers. If it turns out to be a website or a blog, I would need to find some examples of a school website or blog

As this stage ends, I will make a design for the poster, newsletter, blog and website. From that, I will know what

kind of advertisement I want to make

TimeIt must be finished over eight weeks. I need to finish it

on time or in time. I will try my best to make it finished as soon as possible.

I will try to remind myself by a timetable that I keep on a

journal

Target Audience

The target audience is the parents and their children. I will try to make whatever advertisement I would make interesting, attractive but as well, informative and simple at the same time.

I will search for some school w e b s i t e s o r b l o g s newsletters or poster so from all those examples that I found, I will write down what I like and dislike from those examples.

AestheticsThe advertisement, needs to be interesting, attractive but also informative and simple. That’s why I would need colors in the advertisement but the colors need to be appropriate

As this stage ends, I will try to design the advertisements and then, I will try to improve them.

Title Specification and Why? Test

Function It is for advertising SWA because SWA is losing its students. I will look for

PurposeTo interest parents and their children to go to school in SWA. It would be a great advantage for SWA if this advertisement can interest many people to have their

children in SWA

I will search for websites, newsletters and any form of advertisement that would be good for my advertisement

Cost

It depends on what form of advertisement I will be making later on. If I will make poster or newsletter, I

would need to buy papers to do so. If I decide to decide to make a website or a blog, I would need to

pay for the electricity that I use still.

In order not to waste my money on papers, I will use

the papers that I have bought wisely. And if I decide to

make either a website or a blog, I will use the electricity

efficiently.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 15: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Title Specification and Why? Test

SafetyThe safety is really important. The posters and

newsletters don’t need to have sharp edges so the audience won’t get paper cut.

I will write the concern of the safety on my journal so I can

remind myself and at the time I buy the papers, I will

check it really carefully

DurabilityThe poster itself will last long if everyone treats it well. Although, I might lose it, the data that I create either my website or poster will last forever if I save it in my

USB.

I will save the poster or newsletter itself very

carefully or use thicker paper.

Ease of creation

Making posters and newsletters are a lot easier than making a website or a blog.

Because I’ve made a newsletter once and I’ve

tried to make a blog in the past and when I compare the

process of making them, making a newsletter is much

easier.

Page 16: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Summary As I’ve done my specification, I listed the points that I need to have in my advertisement (in whatever form it is) The material depends on what form my advertisement is and the advertisement needs to be done in 8 weeks and I will try my best to finish it either on time or in time. The advertisement needs to be interesting and attractive since the target audience is the children, and appropriate as well since the target audience, also includes the children’ parents. The cost depends on what I will be making later on, if I make posters or newsletters, I would need papers so I need to buy them. If I decide to make a blog or a website, I still need to pay for the electricity that I use.

Well, the purpose of this advertising is to advertise SWA so it can get more students coming in and also the community knows SWA exist, which is another advantage from this advertisement.

I picked that website as an example. It is a website from Cleveland High School. This website is simple and very formal but the website appearance doesn’t seem really attractive or interesting for the students. But it is really informative about the school itself, aside from the appearance. So I can say what I like about the website is how informative this website. For my advertisement, I will try to remind myself not to make the advertisement too simple so it won’t bore the audience easily and informative.

Pros:- Simple- Informative - The font and co lor s a re appropriate

Cons:- Takes time, might not be finished within time limit.- The website is too boring for the young audience or for the adults.

I picked this website, which is the Doon school website. It is slightly attractive than the first website because it has appropriate and simple colors and a picture of the school. Not only the appearance is good, the website provides good information although the information is not as detailed as the first website. From this website, again, I will try to make the appearance simple but not boring and I will take pictures of the school so the audience can see the school as well as the information.

Pros:- The aesthetics is good- Simple- Informative- Has pictures- Both co lors and fonts are appropriate

Cons:- Takes time, might not be done within time limit

Cons:- The information is limited

SWA newsletter 2Pros:- The aesthetics is great, the colors are appropriate as well and even better than the first design.- More information for the audience- Has pictures- Doesn’t take too much time to finish.

Cons:- The information takes spaces.- The children might lose interest in the first place

SummaryFrom the specification I made, the design gets the most specification is design 4 and the fourth design is a newsletter. The newsletter I made is a newsletter that contains information about SWA more specifically than the third design. Well, the design has some problems. Although I wrote some long words about the school, I managed to put some appropriate colors so if the audience are children, they won’t be bored easily yet I use appropriate colors for the adults. I also managed to put two pictures of the school.Because it meets most of the specifications, I chose this design but personally, I like this design the best from the other designs that I have on my slides.

PARTNER’S OPINION

Alvina: I think the aesthetics of your design is really good and it has a lot of information on it. But I think you don’t have to type the information that long and just summarize it into more simple sentences so it doesn’t take a lot of space on the advertisement.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 30: Candice IT Advertisement 8

SUMMARY

I made some modifications to the fourth design. I added some pictures, the informations has been summarized into more simple sentences. The modifications are based on what Alvina said about my fourth design. From this design, I hope that this would help the school to have more students coming.

Application

✦ On this project, I will be using Pages software to make my SWA advertisement. I think the software is easy to use and has more pictures and themes as well, rather than using Word Document.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 36: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Questions and Answers

✦ Was the plan detailed enough and why?

For me the plain is detailed enough to be followed because I’ve explained how I am going to make the advertisement by the task organizer and the gantt chart. And I explained it again through my drawings, and what I’m concerned is people don’t really understand what they are supposed to do if they see the step by step plan or the timing in the task organizer may be wrong because it’s only my estimation. But, I also explained what software I’m going to use and its reason.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 37: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Questions and Answers

✦ Could it be followed by someone else?

I think it can. It is a very simple plan in my opinion and I’ve explained the process but the timing, may be are not going to be the same because the timing in the task organizer is only my estimation so anything could possibly go wrong so it takes time to solve or the either way, some process that I think will take much time could turn out doesn’t take too much time as I thought.

✦ Have I used all the resources that are available to me?

I have used the resources that are available to me. I gathered my information from the resources that I found.

Evaluation Candice Christania

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 52: Candice IT Advertisement 8

evaluating my performance at each stage of the design cycle

Investigation: The initial task was to create an advertisement that can attract more parents to have their children go to Sinarmas World Academy school for education. From all stages, I think it might be one of the easiest stage. I did an interview with my parents to get some ideas what kind of school they want to have their children educated in and overall, SWA is a school that almost fulfills all criteria my parents want their children to be educated in. This stage is not too complicated, so I think I did pretty well but maybe the most difficult part was to find some various advertisements that had already been made.

Design: This stage is probably the hardest stage among the stages. It’s hard because I got confused whether I had to create the design or take some screen-shots of examples of school advertisements but in the end, I did both...which I create two designs. I evaluated them, what I do like, what I don’t like and what positive points that I can have on my final design.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 53: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Plan: In my planning stage, I planned my timetable so when I’ve reached create stage, I can always look back if I forgot what I should do and how much time should it take. The timetable was not going to be accurate in the first place, since it was only my estimation. Next, I made step by step. We were warned not to include any words because not everyone is going to understand what language we are speaking through the step by step yet it made it difficult to do. My drawings may not be so detailed so people who see it might not understand what I’m trying to say so it was a quite disappointment for me but I didn’t waste time on this stage, which is a good thing.

Create: Through the process of creating the product, the class needed to ten posts on their blogs, which containing how much they have progressed and what they have accomplished so far. I actually didn’t think I would have finished ahead because my product didn’t need so much time to work on the advertisement because I only took too much time

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 54: Candice IT Advertisement 8

on finding the pictures, the information and yet making the appearance looks good but, this led to both positive and negative. What’s great is I can finish ahead of my peers but unfortunately, it affected my posts. Because I should have ten by then, and back then I only had 6 posts so I need to brainstorm what I could have written down. So in the end, I ended up taking opinions from my peers and even my family and it made 10 posts in the end. So I’m quite happy about it.

Evaluation: This stage is pretty easy, but it does need a few reflections so I think it’s time-consuming.

Aesthetics

As this stage ends, I will try to design the advertisements and then , I w i l l t r y to improve them.

I think it is successful because my peers s a i d t h a t m y a d v e r t i s e m e n t s t r e n g t h i s t h e aesthetics, yet they said it is interesting and creative.

Target audience

I will search for some school websites or blogs newsletters or poster so f rom al l those examples that I found, I will write down what I like and dislike from those examples.

Safety

I will write the concern of the safety on my journal so I can remind myself and at the time I buy the papers, I will c h e c k i t r e a l l y carefully

Successful points

Aesthetics: The colors and the pictures help my aesthetics so it helps my newsletter to look nice.

Language: I wrote the information in language that is not too advanced. Therefore, children or people who don’t understand English very well, can still understand what I’m saying.

Easy to find: If this poster is going to be put on the wall, it would be easier for the audience to read rather making a blog or a website that would take them need to search it first.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 61: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Least successful points

Articles: The articles are not very detailed. Since i wrote the sentences in simpler language, i made the articles short. I also forgot about the address and SWA’s phone number.

Durability: As I said before, it is vulnerable against water or any movements that could cause damage to the advertisement.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 62: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Client peer to peer

Alvina: I think overall, the aesthetics are great, including the font and the pictures but i think you missed the address and school phone number / fax.

Do Yeon: I like the way the pictures are being put, the information is also detailed, but i don’t like the type of font you used.

Jenny: The aesthetics are great, as well for the pictures but I think it looks like a poster instead of newsletter.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 63: Candice IT Advertisement 8

Improvement of product

If I’ll have the chance to make another newsletter about SWA, I would include more useful information and more pictures, which I would take by myself so I can shoot the pictures from interesting angles. I also would listen to my peers opinion on what they would want the advertisement to look like and what they would want to know so therefore I can work based on what their opinions.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 64: Candice IT Advertisement 8

The impact to the society

People could see the newsletter and spread it out to anyone they know. It would help both sides. First, people would consider to have their children to go to SWA and also, children that read my newsletter could see the information, such as using laptop to help the students study would want to consider to move school. SWA could also take an advantage from it, if there will be any students coming to SWA, it would keep the school ongoing. If this happens, that means I accomplished my purpose and function from the advertisement.

Friday, November 4, 2011

Page 65: Candice IT Advertisement 8

The impact to the environment

I think because I used paper as my material in order to create the advertisement, it would need an action to cut down more trees so papers can be provided and there could be some activities that involving smoke being released to the environment. And when I was creating the advertisement, I had to charge my laptop to keep it running and charging my laptop means that I was using electricity.
