While studying food policy as a master’s
candidate at NYU, Leanne Brown
asked a simple yet critical question:
How well can a person eat on a constrained budget—
particularly the $4 a day budget given by the U.S.
government’s SNAP/Food Stamp program? The answer
is—with all the right tools—surprisingly well.
With the help of a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign,
Leanne Brown self-published the 1st edition of Good and
Cheap with 40,000 copies in print. Coming this July, a newly
updated and expanded 2nd edition of Leanne’s cookbook
will be available through Workman Publishing.
In Good and Cheap, Leanne shares the simple secret
that makes all the difference: Kitchen skill, not budget,
is the real key to great food. These 152 nutritious
recipes—from Spicy Pulled Pork to Broiled Tilapia with
Lime, Shrimp and Grits, and even desserts like Coconut
Chocolate Cookies and Peach Coffee Cake—maximize
every ingredient and teach economical cooking
methods. Plus there are tips on prices and shopping, on
stocking your pantry with the basics, and on mastering
the simple extras that make everything taste better.
We hope you’ll share Leanne’s message with your
community. The new edition of Good And Cheap will
retail for $16.95 in stores, but if your organization supports
people in need, you are eligible for our special bulk rates
for non-profit organizations. Leanne is also available for
speaking events and workshops.

“ . . . gorgeously photographed, meticulously researched . . . It’s no secret why the book has become an overnight success. Good and Cheap explains thoughtful principles for stretching dollars at the grocery store and how to build a pantry. . . . Best of all, the recipes are written with variations in mind, helping readers understand the principles of great cooking, and encouraging them to tailor meals to their own tastes.” —jamieoliver.com

“ [Good and Cheap’s] unfussy recipes go way beyond predictable casseroles and stir-fries (think creamy fettuccine with zucchini; Filipino chicken adobo), with vegetables as the stars of most dishes—and not just because they’re good for you and for the planet.” —Oprah.com
“ Could change the way you shop, cook, and eat . . . Beyond families on food stamps, Brown’s inbox has [been] flooded with thank-yous from students, single parents, families saving to buy a home, and general foodies and chowhounds who appreciate that she’s busting up the myth that eating healthfully entails spending a ton of money. Most [recipes] require short lists of ingredients and minimal advance preparation, making [them] feasible even for absolute rookies in the kitchen.” —Money magazine/Time.com
“ Great-looking meals that can be made from non-fancy and easily available ingredients.” —The Hairpin
