Kingston Hill Officer Candidates

1) Aqeela Darwaish.

Growing up, my mum has always said one thing to me, ‘work hard for it now, make a change, and

enjoy the results for the rest of your life.’ That is also the reason why I believe in the power of

connections, if we stand together, the connection is stronger, and the stronger the connection, the

easierit is to make a change. I am a first year LLB Law student, applying for the role of the Kingston

Hill Officer. I believe I will fulfil this position and represent my University in a beneficial and

sustainable manner. Through this role, I will be able to demonstrate my well-established leadership

skills, from which the University will prosper. As we all know, people are going to be selling dreams

about touching the sky and bringing great changes, but we all know that this is not possible in the

spam of one year. However, I am not going to make false promises orgive anyone high hopes. In my

opinion, the university experienceis an essential part of life forsome, whilst afew spend it partying,

a few hitting the books day and night, and a few focusing on the late night revisions. No matterwhat

category you fall into, I want to assure you that I will represent each and everyone of you and only

speak out on your behalf. On a different note, I am sure everyone is aware of the current political

debates and the whole rise of ‘Islamphobia’, which is truly disturbing. I believe that if I receive this

position, I could bring some change to that whole uprising being a young Muslim girl, although it

won’t be much, we have to start from somewhere right? So, for the sake of that stronger

connection, stand with me and lets take a step forward to making that change happen, for a better

university and a better us.

NUS Delegate Candidates

1) Abdul-Qadeer Khan (AQ)

Hello all, my name is AQ (short for Abdul-Qadeer in case you wondered), and I am a

third year Software Engineering student.

During my time at Kingston, I have worked in many different capacities, which

effectively are aimed at an enhanced and informative student life at Kingston University.

Some of my roles include being a Kingston University ambassador, Academic Mentor,

Senior Course Rep and NUS Delegate.

As some of you may remember, I was elected as the Penrhyn Road Officer last year by

you, the students. However, I could not take on the role due to issues out of my

control.

This year, I am running for the voluntary positions as a NUS delegate to represent you,

the students at Kingston University at the National Union of Students National

conference in April.

The reason I am putting myself forward as a NUS delegate is that I want to submit a motion to the NUS for them to publically support the Abortion Rights Campaign in the Republic of Ireland and the Alliance for Choice in Northern Ireland. Abortion is criminalized in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland It is estimated that 12 women and people a day from the Republic of Ireland travel to the UK for abortion access. Now within the UK this isn;t known as an issue. It’s also estimated that since 1983 that 150,000 women and other people travelled to the UK for abortion services. And while the situation for people in Northern Ireland is exacerbated by the fact that people in

Northern Ireland are not entitled to free abortions on the NHS. The cost of travelling to a private clinic in England can be anywhere from £400 to £2,000. Meaning that a lot of people really have to really pull out all the stops to try and access abortion.

Since starting my MA in Kingston I have also co founded a London branch of the London Irish Abortion Rights Campaign, where we are trying to bring more focus on the countless amount of women and people that are forced to travel to the UK for abortion, particularly with Brexit on the horizon which is a murky potentially future for abortion seekers..

ARC aspires to be inclusive and representative of the varied groups of people affected by Ireland’s restrictive abortion laws. We believe this requires a particular focus on those groups that are disproportionately affected by these laws including women who are marginalised by poverty, racism, immigration status and disability. However we acknowledge the significant structural barriers at a societal and organisational level which prevent marginalised groups participation and involvement in ARC. As a result ARC commits to actively address these barriers so as to support the meaningful involvement of people from all socioeconomic backgrounds, minority ethnic groups or cultures, including Travellers and Roma, people of colour, the LGBTQI community, sex workers and people with disabilities. ARC aims not only to be inclusive within our organisation but also in how we work with others. We aim to work in solidarity with other groups who are experiencing oppression and develop meaningful partnerships to advance our collective struggles across social justice movements in Ireland and internationally.

Hi everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read what I stand for-

As a Kingston mature student I come with a strong background of experience in leadership; both in

business and in political campaigns. I have led campaigns, managed staff, implemented structure and

training, I have fought for campaigns such as, anti- bullying, women’s rights and rape bills to be

amended in third world countries to push for justice for victims. When I get involved you can be sure

it’s with passion.

I can create strong social campaigns both verbally and digitally. Most relevantly I represented Year 5

students to oppose the impractical exam timetable in 2016 fighting for change which resulted in a far

better deal this year. I believe the individual voice should count and united we stand stronger. I will

make our voices louder by highlighting matters which should unite not divide us.

I hear Kingston students from Europe worried about their career opportunities, students travel, fairer

accommodation and travel cost solutions. laboratory access to train, video lectures, mental health

support. These are only some issues I want to help you find solutions to, I am not afraid to ask difficult

questions nor do I fear being unpopular in the process, if it gets the job done I am the person who can

help us open doors and generate change.

If I am selected as NUS Delegate,

I will be passionately involved, listening to your voices and get things done and critically I will

communicate with you regarding topics of importance and outcomes. I am a strong capable and

tenacious individual with a strong moral foundation, I defend against bullying, fight for equal rights and

mental health support within higher education. I am authentic and genuine and not in this campaign

for hegemony or status but for what I can bring to the table.

Main goals

Represent Kingston Students at a national level to push for policy’s that affect us here at

Kingston.

Less talking, more doing. Those are words to live by. And by running for ‘NUS Delegate’ for the first time ever, I intend on putting the words of us KU students into action! Throughout my years of being part of the KU community, I have witnessed large amounts of change and progress. We’ve benefitted greatly from the efforts of our KU alumni and past delegates but we can become even greater so why stop now? I want to represent and stand for thousands of Kingston University students by debating with the NUS board this April. The board is responsible for electing our Presidents as well as determining the universities budgets this year. More so, we have a chance to communicate with the board in relation to further improvements of our university and how to implement these effectively. Why ME? Well, honestly I was one of those students who’ve strutted through KU without having much interest to do with the community at all...! Partying, socialising with my clique and passing exams was superior over engaging in extra-curricular activities, volunteering and having a presence within the KU community. To put it simply, I now see the importance in contributing to our establishment for all the great things it has done for us all, personally and for our further education. Elect myself, as part of the ‘NUS Delegate’ team, to attend the NUS National Conference this year, to be your catalyst for CHANGE. Stassi K West. Business w/ Law Major.

I love voicing students concerns which is why I became a course representative over a year ago, and now I am currently a senior course representative. While being a representative I have met many different people with different opinions on the course I am currently on. This has given me the ability to know what a vast range of students want and the ability to look at a situation in many different angles.

Making student life better for my fellow classmates was something I always wanted to do which is why I was one of the founders of the biomedical society as there was no society when I started this university. This goes to show my ability to go out of my way to make university life better for myself and others.

This year I embarked on being the cricket club coordinator this has taught me management skills and most importantly has given me the ability to communicate with staff in the most efficient manner.

I believe that every student should be listened to, allowing students to voice their concerns which will make the Student Union and the university best geared to Students and making their time at Kingston University a memorable and happy time.

I am committed to help bring change that is in the best concern of the students.

7) Valentine Feldbergs.

Did you know that trustees are responsible for the governance of the union, budget of the union and the strategy of the union?

Hi, my name is Valentine Feldbergs, a business management student. I am applying for the role of a

trustee. This is my manifesto:

I believe that trustee's job is to have a non-objective view and to oversee and assist with the running

of the union, and with that I can't take any pledges that I will take action or change something. But I

can bring the following qualities to Union of Kingston students.

Non-objective view when listening to students issues, and voting for the policies at the board meetings.

Great team member, together everyone achieves more and that is the rule that I live by.

Diversity, I am non judgmental, I listen to everyone's opinion and I believe that everyone has a voice

and it should be heard.

During difficult times I don't get affected by the pressure because I have experience dealing with it, and I use it to my advantage rather than my disadvantage. Pressure motivates me to get the job done.

My past experiences of working with teams:

Co-founder and the CFO of a start-up company. My experience of overseeing the finances of my

company and the inner runnings, I am now inspired to share this experience. This will be an

advantage for working as a trustee.

President of Enactus society, as a president of a society it has taught me the skills necessary to be able to run a society listen to it's members, and constantly improve.

SADRAS research project. This project requires me to speak and listen to many students for our

research and to take in their view without any judgment.

If you need a trustee then you can trust me.
