Chak AU RICHMOND COMMUNITY COALITION I came from Hong Kong in 1988 and have been the leading therapist on the Family and Child Counseling Team for Vancouver Coastal Health in Richmond for over 20 years. As a strong advocate for mental health services, multicultural harmony, and environmental sustainability, I have co-founded several non-profit organizations, including the Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada, Inter-faith for World Peace Society, and the Richmond GreenSpace Society. I was elected a School Trustee from 1999 to 2011, and have just completed my first term on City Council. I believe in open and transparent government. I am committed to bring people’s voices to Council and have been recognized that I always speak in the best interests of the community. I believe we should have a vibrant, business-oriented city centre, and strong neighborhoods built around parks and community facilities. I will continue to advocate for affordable housing and programs for young families.

Adil AWAN RENEW RICHMOND Adil has lived in Richmond since 1974 having emigrated from Uganda and is an air transport pilot based at YVR. In aviation, communication is critical to a pilot’s work; He wants to bring the same kind of mentality to Council where greater dialogue, two-way communication is necessary. Adil is at the fore-front of our local economy as he transports various goods to and from YVR, while his family also operates a local business. Adil is an alumni of the 655 Air Cadet Squadron, a volunteer at various organizations, active in sports and is a member of Unifor airline local 2002. Adil’s hands-on, roll-up the sleeves attitude is most wonderfully demonstrated by his restored 1919 Ford Model T. Adil believes in hard work, dedication, and perseverance - the kind of values his father, Mahmood Awan, has impressed upon him over the years that he will bring to City Hall.

Dan BAXTER RICHMOND COMMUNITY COALITION As a policy professional with the BC Chamber of Commerce, a non-profit business association, I bring a valuable business perspective to the Council table. Prior to joining the BC Chamber, I spent three years with the federal government, two of those years in Ottawa. I am passionate about community service and civic participation. For 15 years, I have been a volunteer member of various boards. Currently, I serve on the Britannia Heritage Shipyard Society Board of Directors. As a young father, I want to see Richmond do better, not just for my family but all families, by providing a fresh voice. My priority is to increase our connection to local government through increased voter participation. I also believe as a steward of your tax dollars, Council must ensure every cent is getting value for money, otherwise we should give it back to you. Together, we can realize Richmond’s full potential!

Candidate for Councillor

Patrick S. SAUNDERS

Born in New Westminster in 1967, and I have called Richmond home since 1970 where I have worked, worship, schooled, and made use of Richmond’s many facilities and organizations ever since. Met my wife Nicole and started a young family Brennan and Noelle.

What I bring is a clear vision of renewal, to rethink how to preserve and deliver or improve service levels. While reducing, or maintaining costs as we prepare for less tax base in the coming years due to mass retirement.

Some idea’s I would like to see are “local police”, a “new” relocated hospital, and seamless services for seniors, youth, and all those in need. I would therefore like to look at turning taxes on and off as needed and not assume that once a tax always a tax why not have levee’s that go away once the job is done.

Dave SEMPLE Being a proud resident of Richmond for over 60 years has given me the ability to truly understand our growing community, our diverse cultures and the specific needs for each. Listening to our residents, encouraging appropriate industry, retaining and developing our agriculture and ensuring the safe use of the river by all, is my priority. Community safety is also a priority for me. Police, fire, ambulance, public works and the many auxiliaries and volunteers that keep our community safe is paramount to the safety of Richmond. Caring for all the people who have needs in our community and developing stronger partnerships is what we in Richmond, need to do. Keeping taxes low is a priority and true transparency in how we spend the money is imperative. I believe in action, accountability and partnership with our community – our Richmond.

Harold STEVES RCA I’ve served on Richmond Council since 1968, helped found the Agricultural Land Reserve as Richmond MLA from 1973 – 1975, and Metro Vancouver’s Food Security Strategy in 2011.

All of our major parks were community initiatives. We wouldn’t have the Richmond Trail System, London Farm, Britannia Shipyard and Gulf of Georgia Cannery heritage sites, Garry Point Park, Terra Nova Rural Park, and the Garden City Lands without councillors, like me, prepared to support the community’s vision.

I support: *developing the Garden City Lands for the Kwantlen Farm School, urban agriculture and park;

*densifying our downtown and protecting single family neighbourhoods;

*requiring new development to provide jobs, affordable housing, community facilities, geothermal and solar energy, and rooftop parks;

*increasing community safety;

*improving our dykes from flooding; and

*protecting our community from jet fuel and coal contamination.

I am proud of the role I’ve played to make Richmond “The Healthiest City in Canada”.

Kristian VON SCHALBURG I have had two careers: one as a floorcovering contractor, the other as a university scientist. I now wish to take the lessons I have learned in business and academia and use them to serve the people of Richmond. I am very interested in learning what issues are of the most concern to Richmond residents and addressing those concerns. I believe I come to the position of city councillor equipped with the ability to analyze municipal matters in a uniquely serious and careful manner. I do not wish to come to this position encumbered with a predetermined agenda or with unyielding views but rather with the freedom to independently assess each and every matter on an individual basis. I promise you that I will serve you as a full-time representative, that I will listen to each and every side of all issues and make balanced, measured decisions on your behalf.

Michael WOLFE RITE RICHMOND

A lifelong Richmond citizen, Michael Wolfe has engaged in Richmond council meetings for years, urging council toward respect for neighbourhoods and nature. This year, Richmond Review readers voted him “Best Person You Would Like to See in Office.”

Michael teaches at McNair Secondary. He also serves on the Richmond Health Advisory Committee and the boards of the Richmond Nature Park Society and Garden City Conservation Society. As a biologist, he leads free eco-tours of the Garden City Lands, which he fought to save.

If elected, Michael will be a voice for those who feel voiceless—for the good of the whole community. His balanced approach will champion our neighbourhoods that make Richmond special while holding senior staff, big rezoner-developers and the mayor to account.

Michael Wolfe, who listens and empowers by nature, would be honoured to represent you as a councillor. Through him, you can have a vote on issues.

Elsa WONG RICHMOND FIRST Richmond has been my home since I emigrated from Hong Kong in 1992. Over the last 22 years, I’ve been involved in a number of different small business ventures, including serving on the strata council at Yaohan Centre. Today, I serve as President of the Canada Asia Pacific Business Association and it has given me unique insight into the needs of local businesses. If elected, I will use my experience to advocate for programs that will support growing our local economy and local jobs. In addition, I will advocate for investment in public safety, such as police and fire, to ensure people feel safe in our growing community. I will also support initiatives that benefit the most vulnerable in society, including seniors and youth. I love Richmond, and now I’m looking to give back. I’m asking for your vote on November 15th.

Jun L. WUYAN Present councillors have done good jobs. But it does not mean younger, less experienced candidates should always wait or they are not able to do better jobs. Three of my five main targets are: 1) Make the meetings of city council live and recorded on Youtube; 2) Make a project to create temporary short-time entry-level jobs in the city to offer newer or

younger Richmond residents to gain real local experiences; 3) Set up a project to promote understanding and acceptance for gay and lesbian community; I am Jun Wuyan, an actor. I have a Master degree in Film Studies. Like other young people, I have done many jobs in the past, like reserve soldier and fitness consultant. This time, I need your continuous support as 3 years ago. We may fail at first, but we will for sure win at last. Let’s make Richmond a nicer city together!

Garry YUILL My family and I love living in Richmond and we want to continue to for decades more. I hope to contribute to Richmond’s continued success and growth in a smart, well planned, and sustainable way. I am a family guy and soccer dad; a commuter; an accountant/auditor, instructor, and entrepreneur -- so I have a good understanding of the needs of both our diverse citizen base and businesses in Richmond. I am eager to serve our city as a member of its local government, but more importantly, I have a desire to raise engagement in our community towards the affairs of local government. Together we can make Richmond the “most appealing, livable, and well-managed community in Canada.” Thank you for your support!
