The Power of Connection

This weekend we conclude our celebrations of First Communion in our cluster parishes. The theme that comes to mind in this season of First Communions is connection.

But rst, let me share a personal story. My mom’s birthday was recently. During one of the birthday meals (when your mom gets a birthday month, there is always more than one), my brother and I were reminiscing about growing up and how much we appreciate mom. A lot of these memories involve food. For example, we would pick blackberries during the summer at a nearby eld and mom would reward our e orts with blackberry cobbler. For our birthdays, mom would take us to McDonald’s before school. My brother still remembers the excitement of getting the big breakfast, and I remember ordering the same thing every year. I appreciated this time of reminiscing because I was able to share the experience with mom but with my family as well.

With First Communion, there are many connections. The rst connection is with our Lord who says, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) Why do children receive at such a young age? Here’s why. Pope St. Pius X (1903-1914) is known as the Pope of the Eucharist for his e orts to foster devotion of the Blessed Sacrament, including lowering the age of reception of First Communion to the age of reason. When Pope Pius was a boy, he wanted to receive Holy Communion before the minimum age of the time which was 12 years old. He had such a strong desire and made such a fuss that he was told, “When you become pope, you can change it!” He became pope at the age of 68, and the rest is history.

The second connection is to our own First Communion. Most of us received our First Communion at a very young age, so the memory of the rst time has faded. Seeing a young child walk up to the priest –perhaps a little shy and trepidatious – is a reminder that, even if we can’t remember all the details, we were once like that child: excited, nervous, and everything in between.

The third connection is with the child who is receiving. This past weekend Fr. Brad shared with me that attendance was lower at the Masses he celebrated. My rst reaction was “That’s too bad!” until Iconnected the dots. For the past two weeks, parishioners have been telling me about First Communions at other parishes, near and far. One parish near Baton Rouge had over 200 children celebrate their First Communion, and many parishes had to divide the class among di erent weekend Masses. I am grateful that so many of you shared in the family celebrations even if we missed you for weekend Masses. It’s always good to celebrate connection in a such a meaningful way!

Peace,Fr. Matthew
