A Game Changer “This… is a game changer,” said the commercial. If you’ve watched any television in the past decade, you’ve heard such hyperbole to describe different products, mostly likely a new car or a new phone. The advertisers want you to believe that this thing will change your life. You’ve driven a car your whole life, but this time it will be different. Your smartphone has had the same general shape for the past 15 years – thank you, iPhone –, but this time it will be different. If all it took was a new car or new phone to change our lives, I would be out of a job. Why go to church if some product can satisfy all your needs?

Fortunately, we are not simply bodies. Each of us is a body and soul together. You have an eternal soul, which means that there is no product on earth that can meet all your needs. Your needs are not only physical but spiritual as well. This begs the question: If physical products are anointed by aggressive advertisers as game changers, is there an equivalent for the soul? What does a game changer for the soul look like?

Over the past weekends, Fr. John and I have been sharing about a parish experience that has benefited different parishes in our diocese and beyond. The parish experience is called the ACTS retreat. ACTS stands for Adoration, Community, Theology and Service. As we mentioned last weekend, this is an overnight, weekend retreat that is hosted by fellow parishioners. The retreats for men and women are held separately. The retreat makes such an impression on parishioners that people line up to attend and to serve on the retreat. My experience of getting volunteers for anything in the parish is like pulling teeth. I believe the enthusiasm from people wanting to work the retreat is what gets a lot of priest’s attention.

After Mass last weekend, a visitor told me on his way out of Mass, “This can be a game changer for your parish.” He was speaking from his experience of an ACTS retreat in another diocese. Since then I’ve heard from parishioners who have family members that attended the retreat. Even after a few announcements, I can already see an interest in this retreat. It will be fun to promote the retreat until we have ours in May and August because one of the rules of the retreat is that you don’t share the details about it. This keeps the experience a surprise for those who attend for the first time.

I attended an ACTS retreat in April of 2016 up in Cottonport, LA. The biggest impression was the attendees, a cross section of men who don’t typically come to church except for funerals, Christmas and Easter (I’m more likely to see their wives). I thought to myself, “Here are the missing men!” If this retreat can reengage even a few men who normally excuse themselves from weekend Mass, I think it’s worth the effort.

Peace,Fr. Matthew

Life is hard, but have no fear Today’s readings take a fearless look at reality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warning us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Christians that the apostles themselves worked in toil and drudgery as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyptic tone of Malachi, describing the utter chaos of the end-times. We will know the end is near when violence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s healing rays, and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads.Copyright (c) J. S.
