Name of the Candidate Maria Hansen (if titles used then Dr)
Position and contact details Laboratory Manager, Track Analysis Systems Ltd, United Kingdom. [email protected]
Activity in the Radon field Commercial activities are radon measurements and manufacturing CR-39 but I have personal interests in measurement uncertainties and microdosimetry in fat cells.
Motivation for EC membership My motivation for applying for EC membership is to help ensure the organisation is relevant to both the research side and the businesses participating. Not always an easy balance to strike.
Short CV
(maximum200 words)
I was born in Denmark but moved to the UK to study physics and has been based there since.
I have been involved in the radon industry for 8 years, working for a spin off company from Bristol Univeristy. I run the largest independent radon measurement laboratory in the UK. Providing measurements for almost all the mitigators in the country and also abroad. I also look after the day to day manufacturing of CR-39.
I have been involved with the two radon bodies in the UK over the years; the UK Radon Association and The Radon Council. As a member of both boards and as an organiser of the first Radon Symposium in the UK.
I have a background in research with a PhD in particle physics and I worked as a research assistent on the health effects of radon (something that still of great interest to me).
My experience from working on both the research side and now the commercial side would be a useful addition to the EC committee.

I graduated nuclear physics in 1985 and worked as a health physicist in uranium industry and its health inspection till 1994. I acquired PhD in 1993 and DSc in 2013 (thesis on new methods related to radon and thoron). Since 1994 I work at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” where at present I am full professor of dosimetry and radiation protection. Most of my research (more than 100 publications and 3 patents) is related to radon. One pioneering achievement to mention is the CD/DVD method for retrospective measurements of radon (2001) and thoron (2011). In 2007 I initiated the first radon mitigation (with active systems) of buildings in Bulgaria. So far I have provided technical consultancy for mitigation of twenty buildings (most of them kindergartens and schools) in Bulgaria and have designed two radon prevention systems in new buildings (kindergartens). I was engaged as an expert within the International Radon Project of the WHO (2005-2008) in two working groups - on radon measurements and radon prevention and mitigation. I am involved in national and international radon related projects and frequently invited to speak on radon on TV and radio programs in Bulgaria.
