Connect hose, wand and nozzle

Connect hosePush the hose connector end (A) into theopening (B) on the front of the cleaner,making sure the prongs (C) on the hoseend align with the holes in the opening.When hose end is properly inserted, youwill hear a click.

To disconnect hose from the cleaner

press the button (D) on the hose con-nector and pull straight out.

Note: The flexible hose contains elec-

trical wires for connection to the

power nozzle and should not be used

if damaged. The wires should not be

seen through the outer skin.

Attach wand and powernozzlePush the end of the wand with the but-

ton (E) firmly into the hose grip (F),making sure the prongs (G) on thewand align with the holes (H) in thehose grip. When wand is properlyinserted, you will hear a click.

To remove the wand from the hose,press on the button (E) located on theend of the wand and pull straight out.

A second extension wand can beattached in the same manner.

Push the opposite end of the wand intothe power nozzle (I), aligning the prongs(J) on the power nozzle with the holes(K) in the wand. When the power nozzleis properly inserted, you will hear a click.

To remove the power nozzle, press onthe button (L) located on the power noz-zle and pull straight out.

Polarized plugTo reduce the risk of electric shock, thisappliance has a polarized plug (oneblade is wider than the other). Thisplug will fit in a polarized outlet only oneway. If the plug does not fit fully in theoutlet, reverse the plug. If it still doesnot fit, contact a qualified electrician toinstall the proper outlet. Do not changethe plug in any way.

Turning cleaner onand adjusting powerlevelAfter assembling cleaner, plug cord intoelectrical outlet. Turn cleaner ON bystepping on the ON/OFF pedal (A).

The suction control can be increased ordecreased by sliding the control (B)towards MIN or MAX.

To turn cleaner OFF, step on the pedal.

Cord rewind pedalThe cord rewind pedal (C) is oppositethe ON/OFF pedal.

Hold on to the plug while cord isbeing rewound to prevent cord fromwhipping.

Handle positions

The handle has two positions when usedwith the power nozzle: upright andoperating.

To lower handle to operating position,place your foot firmly on the power noz-zle and pull handle back.

Power nozzle ON/OFFswitchThe power nozzle ON/OFF switch (A)provides power to the nozzle. Push theswitch to the "ON" position for agitatorbrush operation, and to turn the head-light on. Push the switch to the "OFF"position to stop the brushes, and to turnthe headlight off.Note: The headlight may be turned offby the power nozzle ON/OFF switch,located on the hand grip.

Floor surfaceselectionCarpet cleaningWhen using the power nozzle for carpetand rug cleaning, step on the RUG/FLOOR pedal (D) until the indicator is inthe "RUG" position. This setting providesthe suction and agitator action neces-sary to deep clean carpets.

Hard surface floorcleaningThe power nozzle can be used forcleaning hard surface floors such aswood, linoleum, vinyl, asphalt and rub-ber tile, sealed cork, concrete and ter-razzo, as well as carpet.

To set the power nozzle for hard surfacefloor cleaning, step on the RUG/FLOORpedal placing the indicator in the"FLOOR" position. This setting providessuction and no agitator action.

Cleaning toolsThe cleaning tools are convenientlystored on the cleaner.

A tool may be attached to either thehose or wand by pushing it firmly ontothe hose end or the end of the wand.

Twist tool slightly to tighten or loosen theconnection.

The cleaning tools have many uses.Select the tool best suited for the clean-

ing task from the following descriptions.

Select the proper toolE. Round swivel brush (stores onextension wand) may be used forcarved furniture, table tops, books,lamps, lighting fixtures, venetian blinds,baseboards, shutters and registers. Thehead of the brush swivels for use in

hard-to-reach spaces.

F. Upholstery tool (stores on extensionwand) may be used for upholstered fur-niture, draperies, tapestries, mattresses,

clothing, automobile interiors and car-peted stairs.

G. Crevice tool (stores inside tool lid)may be used in tight spaces, corners,and along edges in such places asdresser drawers, upholstered furniture,stairs and baseboards.

How to clean stairsClean stairs by placing cleaner on end.Clean stairs from bottom to top.

How to store cleanerThe cleaning tools are convenientlystored on the cleaner. Open the tooldoor (H), located on the cleaner body,for crevice tool (G) storage.Place the round swivel brush (E) and theupholstery tool (F) in the recessed areaon the wand storage clip/tool holder (I),located on the extension wand.

With the cleaner standing on end, thewand holder (J) may be inserted into theslot (K) on the bottom of the cleanerbody as shown.

Filter bagWhen to replace

Check the bag when the full bag indica-tor (A) shows red. When bag is filledwith dirt, the cleaner will not operate effi-

ciently. Discard used bag.

CAUTION: Very fine materials, suchas face powder or cornstarch mayseal the filter bag and cause it toburst even though it is only partiallyfull of dirt. When using the cleaner toremove material of this nature,change the bag often.

How to replaceTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.Disconnect hose from the cleaner,pressing the button (B) on the hose con-nector and pulling straight out

cOpen the filter bag door by pressing onthe latch (C).

Pull up on the filter bag frame (D) andremove from bag compartment.

Press on filter bag clamp (E) to releasebag from frame.Discard used bag. Be careful not todispose of filter bag frame.

Place new filter bag behind tabs (F) onunderside of bag frame.

Return filter bag frame and filter bag tobag compartment, making sure all sidesof filter bag are within the bag compart-ment.Close the bag compartment door andreattach hose.

Do not operate cleaner without filterbag in place.

Filters - secondaryand finalHow to cleanTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.

The secondary filter (G), located at therear of the filter bag compartment, pro-tects the motor from dirt particles. If thefilter becomes dirty, lift filter out. Washfilter in warm water. Allow to air drycompletely before returning filter tocleaner.Do not operate cleaner withoutsecondary filter in place.

Turn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.The final filter, located on the back of

the cleaner body, aids in the filtrationprocess to return clean air to the room.To remove this filter, use thumb to openand pull down on filter door (H). Lift filterout and wash in warm water. Allow to air

dry completely before replacing filter.Return filter to the inside of the filter

door. Replace filter door by aligning tab(I) on door with slot (J) on cleaner body.Rotate door upwards, pressing to snapinto place.

Belt replacementThe belt in your power nozzle drives theagitator. It has been designed specificallyfor use in this cleaner and is important foreffective operation.

What to buy

There are other belts manufactured that

are similar in shape and size, but are notdesigned for the HOOVER DurosTM powernozzle. Such belts do not operate the agi-tator correctly and may create stresswhich could damage your power nozzle.Use only a genuine HOOVER belt pack-age no. 40201270 (part no. 59134226)when a belt replacement is necessary.

When to replaceThe belt should be checked from time to

time to be sure it is in good condition. Tocheck, remove the nozzle cover (see fol-lowing section). Replace the belt if it isstretched, cut, or broken.

How to replaceTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet. Disconnect powernozzle from extension wands.

To remove hood, turn nozzle over andunscrew the 2 recessed screws.

Return nozzle to original position and liftoff hood.

Rotate headlight assembly (A) awayfrom the brush roll cover (B).

Unscrew four screws (C) located at rearof brush roll cover.

Remove two metal brackets (D).Lift off brush roll cover.

If belt (E) is not broken, but is stretchedor cut, pull it off the motor pulley (F). Liftup end of agitator brush roll (G). Removeold belt from agitator pulley and replacewith new belt. Lettering on belt must bevisible. Stretch belt back and attach to

motor pulley.

Hold opposite end of agitator brush roll inplace. Push belt end forward, pushingdown until fully seated in place. Turn agi-tator, making sure it rotates freely.

Replace brush roll cover (B) over agitatorbrush roll by aligning the two U-shapedslots in the brush roll cover (H) with thecenter screw housings (I). Press brush rollcover back into position.

Reposition two metal brackets (J), makingsure back of post (K) is facing toward thecenter as shown. Replace four screws.

Rotate the headlight assembly back intopositon.

Position hood on top of nozzle base.

Turn nozzle over. Replace 2 screws.

Agitator brush rollreplacementWhen to replaceTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.When agitator brush roll brushes areworn, the brush roll should be replaced.

To check condition of brushes, moveedge of a card across bottom plate whileturning brush roll. To maintain cleaningeffectiveness, replace brush roll if brush-es do not touch card.

What to buy

When purchasing a new agitator brushroll, ask for HOOVER part no. 59134225.

How to replaceTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.

1. Remove hood, headlight assembly,brush roll cover, belt and brush roll asshown in Figs. 3-10 to 3-13.2. Discard old brush roll.

3. Replace new brush roll and belt asshown in Figs. 3-14 to 3-17.

Headlight replace-mentThe headlight (A), located on top of thepower nozzle, operates when the clean-er is turned on, except when the powernozzle switch is in the OFF position. Useonly HOOVER part no. 59134219 whenreplacing the headlight.

How to replaceTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet. Disconnect powernozzle from extension wands.

1. Remove the flood as shown in Fig.3-10.

2. Rotate headlight assembly (A) awayfrom the brush roll cover (B).8

3. Push old bulb into socket and twist toremove. Push new bulb into socket andtwist into place.

4. Replace the headlight assembly.

5. Position hood on top of nozzle base.

Turn nozzle over. Replace 2 screws.

LubricationThe motor is equipped with two bear-ings that contain sufficient lubrication forthe life of the motor. The addition oflubricant could cause damage.Therefore, do not add lubricant toeither motor bearing.

If a minor problem occurs, it usually canbe solved quite easily when the cause isfound by using the check list below.

Clearing blockagesLow suction or pick up may be due to ablockage in the system. Refer to the fol-lowing steps to check for blockages,continuing with each step until theblockage is found:

1. Turn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet; then disconnectpower nozzle plug and wands fromhand grip.

2. Plug cleaner in, turn on, and checkhose end for suction. Remove anyobstructions.

3. Remove power nozzle from wandsand attach wands to hose. Check forsuction and remove any blockages.

4. Make sure power nozzle is discon-nected from hand grip. Then check forblockage in nozzle connector (A).

Push nozzle connector down to lowest

position. Look into nozzle connector andremove any blockage.
