Anyway, I hope everyone has had fun this jolly festive season. Despite all the

The Icebreaker
Don’t we love to listen to ice breaker speeches? This month, we had some fabulous
speech debuts at CVTM from some of our new members:
Ronnie enlightened us into the secrets of being dr iven to achieve —
have older brothers!
Dishant told us that the m ost perfect child in the world w as born in
1996. Wondering who that child is, Dishant?
Naveen shared w ith us the journey of his life from India to standing
before us presenting his Icebreaker.
Catch up & Meetings Highlights
Our members, Ben
& Susanty tied the
knot on the 16th
December.
Congratulations
to them!
CVTM 2013 ended with a warm and
fun Christmas meeting. Throughout
the year, we gained many new
members, learned more about our
members and discovered much new
information from the many
members’ speeches. Like always,
we continually learn new things
from every Toastmasters meeting.
Mike Palmer presented
Robyn with her 2nd
DTM. Congratulations
on your achievement!

Speech Preparation
By Vanessa Chang
We all like to talk about ourselves and our
interests. We also have an insatiable appetite for
stories. These two things combined (yourself
and stories) make the Icebreaker the most
exciting and possibly one of the easiest speeches
to put together. Each individual has their own
fascinating story to tell. Tell your story with upbeat enthusiasm, energy and
passion and you will have your audience captivated.
Talking about the things that interest you ensure you are comfortable with
your topic. So comfortable, those six minutes almost isn’t enough time! My
mentor gave me great advice and by choosing only three things to talk about
meant my 20 minute blurb about “me” was cut to the allocated timeframe.
With any toastmaster role (especially as a club newbie) read your manual
and what is expected of you on the evening. Chat with your mentor or
others, as the manual recommendations sometimes slightly deviate from
what is expected at your own club. Try not to leave things to the last minute
and get into the habit of reading and jotting down notes for your role in the
week to come. I find this easier to do on the Tuesday evening as a week
disappears far too quickly!
Any spare moment of the day think about and practice your speech in your
head, as the more you practice the more confident you become with your
content. Then on the day you will know exactly what you will be saying
regardless of nerves. Stand in front of a mirror and practice how you will
deliver your speech. Practice how you stand, the gestures you make with
your hands, your body and where to add pauses. A stop watch App will also
give you some idea about the length of your speech.
When it comes to presenting, over the top always makes things more
interesting. Abraham Lincoln was an inspirational leader in his day and well regarded for his inspiring speeches. He was by no means a short man
and at 6’4” he would accentuate his tall lean stature by wearing a very tall
top hat. Presenting is not just about what and how you say things but also how you look. Do an Abraham and accentuate what you’ve got – even an
Icebreaker should and can be a spectacle!
The Toastmaster’s Wisdom
Table Topics for you
If you opened a restaurant, what would you call it and what food would you
serve?
Vanessa’s role as
Grammarian
Whilst listening to a Professor of Grammar
being interviewed on the radio I came to learn
grammar was removed from the school
curriculum in the 80’s. As a child of the
80’s , I was never taught grammar so in my role
as Grammarian, I simply had to
confabulate. An elderly neighbour who happens
to be an ex-English teacher, appreciated my choice of the word and
did offer another definition - he said it
was a marvellous way to say “bullshit”!
Word of the month
CONFABULATE (verb)
1) To talk together
2) To make
something up

What do you like best about Canning Vale
Toastmasters?
Apart from being the nearest club to my home,
Canning Vale Toastmasters has a friendly cross-
section of members, and the atmosphere is
encouraging and supportive.
What do you do for a living?
Currently I am employed within the accounting
department of a settlement/real estate agency. My
background has been within the accounting/finance
departments of the television/adverting industry. My
previous occupation was Finance Manager for a
Community Television Station.
How has Toastmasters helped you in your
job?
For me Toastmasters has been more of a personal
journey, giving me awareness, confidence and insight.
The journey has of course given me communication
and leadership skills which can be definitely used in
any work environment.
What’s next for you in Toastmasters?
Currently I am the Area Governor of Area S31 and for
the last six months it has been an exciting and
wonderful journey. I look forward to the next six
months of being Area Governor with more confidence
and a willingness to do my best.
William Placanica
Why did you join Toastmasters?
Ever since I can remember I have always enjoyed
public speaking. At school it was a pleasure to
read in front of the class and at university giving
presentations was always a buzz. However during
those educational years there was nowhere I knew
that I could go and develop presentation skills. In
my adulthood I found out about Toastmasters. I
joined Toastmasters to gain confidence and the
skills necessary to be a competent speaker and
presenter.
How long have you been a member?
I initially joined Gosnells/Foothills in 2006 and
from late 2009 I took a sabbatical, returning in
April 2012. I have been a member of Canning Vale
Toastmasters ever since.
