WITH THE ALL NEW SUPERSIX EVO, CANNONDALE HAS ONCE AGAIN RESET THE STANDARD FOR CYCLING EFFICIENCY.

Weight, Stiffness, Strength, Compliance and Aerodynamics; these five factors are the cornerstones of cycling efficiency. Each one is vital on its own, but more important than any individual factor is striking a balance between all of these competing elements, bringing out the maximum benefits of each attribute in such a way that no one element dominates the others. When all of these elements are balanced, when the bike disappears beneath you and simply becomes an extension of your body, that’s the truest expression of efficiency. That’s the magic; what separates the truly great from the merely good. The SuperSix EVO is the distilled sum of everything we’ve learned up to this point.

It is the most efficient road bike ever created.

IT’S ULTRA LIGHT.

At just 695 grams, it is the lightest frame ever tested at Zedler Fahrradtechnik in Germany.

IT’S STIFF.

It has the best stiffness-to-weight ever recorded, an incredible 142.3 Nm/deg/kg.

BallisTec Carbon Construction and superior carbon engineering allow the EVO to outperform even the legendary CAAD9 in destructive and fatigue testing.

IT’S SMOOTH.

Rather than simply improving rider comfort, the two-zone SPEED SAVE micro-suspension system is designed to help the EVO roll, corner and accelerate faster.

IT’S SLIM.

The EVO achieves its strength, stiffness and compliance all with smaller tube diameters. This drastically reduces its frontal area, giving it significantly less drag than its oversized competitors, without the weight and stiffness compromises of aero tube shapes.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. BALLISTEC CARBON

Extremely lightweight (890 g for the Hi-MOD) with great lateral and torsional stiffness but with an incredible road feel and liveliness often lost in carbon frames.

2. CONTINUOUS CARBON

The EVO’s construction features a continuous network of high modulus stiffening fibers which run around the joint areas and along the outside edges of the frame tubes. This network connects all the parts of the frame and allows us to precisely tune the ride quality and handling.

3. QUADRUPLE MONOCOQUE DESIGN

The EVO is made up of four individual monocoque pieces. The head tube/down tube/top tube, the BB/seat tube, and each chain stay/dropout/seat stay assembly are separately molded, then joined with a precise pattern of carbon overwrapping.

4. ONE-PIECE STAY/DROPOUT ASSEMBLIES

One of the key weight saving features on the EVO is the innovative rear stay/dropout assemblies. The chain stay, seat stay and dropout are molded as a single piece on each side. This requires a separate mold for each side, for each size bike but allows us to run carbon continuously from each stay through the dropout, distributing force more evenly and saving over 40 grams compared to traditional construction methods.

5. SPEED SAVE MICRO-SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Smoother is faster. While most companies view vertical compliance simply as a means to enhance rider comfort, we’ve designed a vertical compliance system that actually makes the bike faster.

The SuperSix EVO has two zones of vertical compliance which work together to improve comfort and speed. The first zone, made up of the SPEED SAVE Stays and Offset Dropout Fork Blades, focuses primarily on chassis dynamics. Much like the suspension on an F1 car, these features are engineered to help the bike roll faster, not necessarily to add comfort. Subtle vertical compliance in these areas, mated with superb lateral and torsional rigidity, delivers improved rolling speed, better acceleration, dramatically improved cornering speed and control without negatively affecting power transfer.

The second zone concentrates on rider comfort. The seat tube fea-tures a directionally optimized carbon layup which allows it to deflect slightly fore and aft, which diffuses vibration and impacts and reduces the energy-sapping muscle micro-trauma caused by long days in the saddle.

5A.SPEED SAVE REAR STAYS

Sophisticated carbon lay-up and refined tube shaping create an ultra light chain stay/seat stay assembly that allows controlled vertical movement of the rear wheel while retaining exceptional lateral and torsional stiffness. The SPEED SAVE Stays are tuned with work with the SPEED SAVE Offset Dropout Fork.

5B. SPEED SAVE OFFSET DROPOUT CARBON FORK

The 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer is lighter than 1.5” tapered forks and stiffer than the 1-1/8” forks. The 360 gram SPEED SAVE fork also features offset dropouts, allowing more fork angle for vertical compliance while maintaining the same great handling geom-etry as the SuperSix. Tuned to work with the SPEED SAVE Rear Stays.

5C. DELTA SEAT TUBE

The Delta Seat Tube on the EVO features a carbon lay- that allows it to deflect slightly fore-aft under a rider’s weight to absorb impacts and vibration. It is laterally ovalized at the BB to maximize rigidity.

6. PRESSFIT BB30

With the PressFit BB30 system we can mold the entire bottom bracket shell and seat tube in carbon, utilizing continuous fibers that run the length of the structure. Even with the added weight of the cups, this saves over 25 grams and adds stiffness.

7. ERGONOMIC TOP TUBE

The shape of the top tube design maximizes the width and contact area with the head tube for rigidity, then narrows through the middle for knee clearance, then widens again for lateral stiffness where it meets the seat stays. This offers maximum stiffness while still allowing an aero knees-in riding position.

8. REDUCED FRONTAL AREA

Compared to the oversized competition, the EVO has around a 20% smaller diameter down tube, 11% smaller diameter head tube and 15% thinner fork blades. All this adds up to a significant reduction in frontal area and less aerodynamic drag without the added weight and lost rigidity of aero tube shapes.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

2. CO–CURED MONOCOQUE FRONT TRIANGLE

Monocoque front triangle with optimized carbon layup, rear stays and size-specific alloy-faced full carbon dropouts are each molded as a single piece with precise radius-matched interfaces. Precise radius matching allows for maximum contact and support with the mating surface. The parts are joined by co-curing/carbon overwrapping. A more complex and expensive process, co-curing creates lighter, stiffer and stronger structures than the lugged or internal lugged junctions found on many other carbon frames.

3. BEATBOX BB

Massively oversized BeatBox BB area delivers torsional rigidity needed to turn the twisting loads from the cranks into forward momentum.

4. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYS

The driveside chain stay is oversized and shaped to resist the axial loads of the drivetrain, while the non-driveside chain stay has opti-mized material placement for weight saving and power transfer.

5. HOURGLASS SEAT STAYS

Hourglass stays allow the vertical compliance necessary to maintain confident control over less-than-perfect surfaces, and the comfort required to be able to deliver maximum performance after long days in the saddle.

6. DEEP RADIUS HEAD TUBE

Deep radius head tube increases the cross section of the crucial top tube/down tube/ head tube junction for incredible torsional rigidity, and positions the lower headset bearing in line with the down tube for added strength. Molded carbon headset cups replace aluminum for weight savings.

7. TAPERED STEERER FULL CARBON FORK

CARBON FIBER

Cannondale uses unidirectional carbon fiber exclusively for our carbon construction. This allows our engineers to fine tune the directional strength of carbon – its anisotropic properties – to maximize perfor-mance depending upon the loads and characteristics in each tube.

While other bike manufacturers use woven fibers, we prefer not to use it for two reasons:

1. Any kind of woven fibers – take the shirt you’re wearing, for example – has a bit of give or stretch to it. The last thing that sprinters want when they’re headed for the line is a frame that has a bit of give as the fibers expand and then contract. This kind of performance robs valuable energy that could otherwise be used to drive the bike forward. No one wants a bike that’s designed like their shirt.

2. Woven carbon fiber puts the fibers at 90 degrees to one another, which can negate any ability to fine tune carbon’s performance. When paired with sophisticated engineering and lay-up, unidirectional fibers allow us to precisely control a tube’s directional stiffness. This keeps you tracking true through the turns and maximizes every watt of power in the sprints and climbs.

HISTORY REPEATS: ALMOST 30 YEARS AGO, CANNONDALE’S OVERSIZED ALUMINUM FRAMES REWROTE THE BOOK ON BIKE DESIGN. TWELVE MONTHS AGO WE ROCKED THE INDUSTRY WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF CAAD10, A BIKE THAT HAS YET AGAIN RESET THE LIMITS OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE WITH ALUMINUM AND GARNERED UNIVERSAL RAVE REVIEWS IN THE PROCESS.

Tipping the scales at a mere 1150 grams* it’s not only the lightest alu-minum road frame ever created, it’s lighter than most of our competi-tors’ elite carbon frames.

CAAD10 is light years ahead of any other aluminum bike on the market. It doesn’t look like any other aluminum bike and it sure as hell doesn’t ride like any other aluminum bike out there. Repeatedly compared to carbon models in ride feel and performance, it’s an all-out racer that not only corners like a race car in the crits, but also puts the average carbon fiber frame to shame in stage races or your local training ride.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. RACE GEOMETRY. RACE PERFORMANCE

CAAD10 is a racer through and through, unlike many of our competi-tors’ aluminum bikes with geometries that dumb down the delight of riding a high performance aluminum race machine. Engineered for per-formance, the CAAD10 rides better than most carbon offerings.

2. SMARTFORMED 6069 ALLOY CONSTRUCTION

The most sophisticated aluminum construction on the planet allows ultra precise wall-thickness and tube shape manipulation, ensuring that material is placed exactly where it is needed for stiffness and strength with zero excess.

3. OPTIMIZED TUBE SHAPES

Oversized, round down tube flares to meet the head tube for maximum stiffness. The massive, horizontally ovalized top tube measures a huge 47.5x42mm where it meets the head tube, narrows through the middle for knee clearance, then widens again to meet the seat stays.

4. SPEED SAVE STAYS

The SPEED SAVE chain stays and seat stays are shaped and butted to allow them to flex vertically but stay extremely stiff laterally and verti-cally. Functioning like the suspension on F1 cars, SPEED SAVE offers improved rolling speed, better acceleration, and dramatically improved cornering speed and control without negatively affecting power transfer.

5. SPEED SAVE CARBON FORK

The 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer is lighter than 1.5” tapered forks and stiffer than the 1-1/8” forks. The 360 gram SPEED SAVE fork also features offset dropouts, allowing more fork angle for vertical compliance without affecting the handling. Tuned to work with the SPEED SAVE rear stays.

6. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYS

The driveside chain stay is oversized to better resist the loads from the drivetrain, while the non-drive stay is optimized for weight savings.

7. DELTA SEAT TUBE

The 27.2 compatible seat tube is laterally ovalized at the BB for great BB stiffness.

8. TAPERED HEAD TUBE

The externally machined, oversized head tube houses a 1-1/8” to 1-1/4” tapered carbon steerer fork.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. HEADSUP RACE GEOMETRY

The CAAD8 shares the proven race geometry of its more expensive brethren but with a slightly taller head tube (+1.5mm) for a more relaxed riding position.

2. SAVE STAYS

Optimized chain stay and seat stay shaping provides lateral rigidity while providing vertical compliance for bump absorption and comfort with no loss in power transfer.

3. SMOOTH WELDS

A true smooth weld, rather than the sand, putty, and paint “smooth welds” of our competition, Cannondale’s trademark double-pass smooth weld technology eliminates the stress-risers and weak points found on traditionally welded frames, enabling us to build lighter, stronger frames.

4. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYS

Just like on our premium race bikes, we oversize and reshape the drive-side chain stay to better handle the loads from the drivetrain, while keeping the non-drive stay svelte for weight savings.

5. EXTERNALLY MACHINED HEAD TUBE

A technique Cannondale has used for years, excess material is pre-cisely machined out of the low stress areas of the head tube, saving significant weight with no loss of strength.

6. TAPER-BUTTED TUBES

Like the legendary CAAD frames of the past, the CAAD8 features 6061 aluminum which has been taper-butted and heat-treated to a T6 hard-ness. The smooth transitions provided by taper-butting eliminate the internal stress risers of traditionally butted frames, again allowing a lighter, stronger frame.

7. DOUBLE-SIDED DERAILLEUR HANGER

The new double-sided, replaceable derailleur hanger is considerably stiffer than single sided hangers for crisper, more precise shifting response.

8. BB30 SYSTEM

Found on both the 105 and Tiagra equipped models, BB30 is the epit-ome of System Integration. Cannondale invented BB30 10 years ago to take crank and frame performance to the next level and it has become THE industry standard for stiffness and light weight.

It’s a harsh world out there but at least for your riding, the updated Synapse is as plush as plush gets. For 2012, we’ve improved on the award-winning Synapse Carbon by adding our new three point SAVE PLUS Comfort System to its successful monocoque mainframe. Made up of redesigned rear stays, a new offset dropout fork and an interchange-able dual flex seatpost, the SAVE PLUS system adds enormous vertical compliance and comfort, while retaining the light weight, torsional rigidity and lively ride-feel of the previous version. So whether you’re racing the cobbles of the Arenberg forest or simply enjoying a Gran Fondo ride with friends, the 2012 Synapse brings unprecedented level of smooth to elite race performance.

While the proven geometry and positioning of our Synapse stays the same, the new Synapse is loaded with improved performance features.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. SAVE PLUS REAR STAY MICRO-SUSPENSION SYSTEM

An all new carbon lay-up and exaggerated vibration-absorbing tube shapes give the SAVE PLUS chain stay/seat stay system 13% more ver-tical deflection than the previous version, while actually improving the frames lateral and torsional stiffness.

2. SAVE PLUS MULTIFLEX INTERCHANGEBLE SEATPOST SYSTEM

Fine tune your ride-feel to match your weight, terrain or preference by choosing either the firm-flex or soft-flex version of the SAVE PLUS seatpost shaft. The quick-change removable seatpost head allows you to switch back and forth between posts without having to remove and readjust the saddle each time. Compatible with 2009-2010 Synapse frames for owners who wish to upgrade.

3. SAVE PLUS FULL CARBON FORK

The Synapse SAVE PLUS full carbon fork is completely redesigned for 2012. Offset dropouts allow the fork blades to have the vertical compliance of a shallow rake fork, without sacrificing the Synapse’s nimble, precise handling. Refined carbon lay-up and SAVE shaping further enhance the fork’s vertical compliance.

4. PERFORMANCE GEOMETRY

The proven geometry and positioning of our Synapse stays the same. Compared with our Elite race geometry, the Synapse geometry features a taller head tube (2-2.5cm taller), gently sloping top tube, slightly relaxed head angle and longer wheelbase. This combination provides a more upright riding position and a lively, yet stable feel. It’s confi-dence-inspiring and relaxing but avoids the sluggish feel and awkward handling of many “comfort” road bikes.

5. CO-CURED MONOCOQUE FRONT TRIANGLE

Monocoque front triangle with optimized carbon layup, rear stays and size-specific alloy-faced full carbon dropouts are joined by co-curing/carbon overwrapping. A more complex and expensive process, co-curing creates lighter, stiffer and stronger structures than the lugged or inter-nal lugged junctions found on many other carbon frames.

6. BB30 SYSTEM

BB30 on all carbon Synapses. BB30 is the epitome of System integra-tion. Cannondale invented the BB30 standard 10 years ago to take crank and frame performance to the next level and our Hollowgram SL crankset remains the lightest, stiffest production crankset on the market.

An ultra narrow frontal area and wind tunnel-proven tube shapes make the Slice one of the most aerodynamic frames ever tested by Tour magazine.

2. AERO SAVE MICRO-SUSPENSION SYSTEM

Cannondale’s designers know that all the aerodynamics in the world aren’t worth a thing if you can’t maintain the aero position, or if the ride leaves you so beat up that you can’t put out your best on the run. At the heart of the Slice’s remarkable comfort is the AERO SAVE micro-suspension system. An elegant combination of directional tube shaping and extremely sophisticated carbon lay-up, the AERO SAVE system allows the rear chain stays and seat stays to deflect together vertically to absorb road shock, while staying extremely stiff laterally and torsionally.

3. STABLE GEOMETRY

4. TWO-POSITION SEATPOST

The two-position Slice seatpost offers a range of effective seat angle adjustment from 73-78 degrees for Triathlon or UCI legal time trial use.

5. BB30 SYSTEM

Cannondale-developed BB30 technology allows riders to use the light-est and stiffest cranksets on the market. BB30 technology reduces Q-factor for a narrower frontal area and improved aerodynamics and also features ceramic BB bearings for reduced rolling resistance.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. BALLISTEC CARBON

Our High-Strength, High-Impact carbon construction, BallisTec ends the traditional connection between ultra-light carbon frames and fra-gility. Over. Period. End of story.

Ultra high-strength fibers developed for military ballistic armoring, and impact-resistant hot-melt resins are used as the primary structural materials of the frame while the stiffer but more brittle high-modulus carbon fibers are used strategically in protected locations to enhance stiffness. Lighter and stiffer than aluminum, pound for pound stronger than steel, BallisTec carbon is perfect for the kind of abuse the ‘cross season dishes out.

2. SPEED SAVE VIBRATION ELIMINATION TECHNOLOGY

The chain stays and seat stays on the SuperX feature our trademark SPEED SAVE technology. Flattened cross-sections and sophisticated carbon layup allows the SPEED SAVE features to act like a micro-suspension system, deflecting vertically to absorb trail shock and vibration, while staying extremely rigid laterally for power transfer and confident cornering.

3. CONTINUOUS CARBON

Uninterrupted stiffening fibers run the entire length of the top tube and seat stays, distributing loads more evenly throughout the frame.

4. TUBE2TUBE CONSTRUCTION

When it comes to minimizing weight and maximizing stiffness, our Tube2Tube construction simply can’t be beat. Each tube is individu-ally laid up, orienting the unidirectional fibers precisely to resist the tube-specific loads, then the tubes are joined and overwrapped fol-lowing an equally precise layup schedule. Time consuming, demanding and expensive, this process yields the lightest, stiffest and strongest results.

5. SHAPE-OPTIMIZED TUBING

Stripped down to its bare essentials, each tube represents the maxim of “form follows function”: oversized 53mm round down tube for maximum torsional rigidity and ovalized Delta seat tube for maxi-mum BB area stiffness. The straight tubing on the SuperX shaves the most weight possible by enabling the carbon fibers to pull absolutely straight, which increases the performance of the fiber.

TECHNOLOGY HIGHLIGHTS

1. RELAXED RACE GEOMETRY

The CAADX has a slightly taller head tube and slightly slacker head tube angle than the SuperX, providing a more upright position and stable handling.

2. SMOOTH WELDS

A true smooth weld, rather than the sand, putty, and paint “smooth welds” of our competition. Cannondale’s trademark double-pass smooth weld technology eliminates the stress-risers and weak points found on traditionally-welded frames, enabling us to build lighter, stronger frames.

3. HOURGLASS SEAT STAYS

The hourglass shape of the seat stays offers significant vertical com-pliance for comfort and control over rough surfaces, while remaining laterally rigid for solid power transfer and confident handling.

4. ASYMMETRIC CHAIN STAYS

Just like on our premium race bikes, we oversize and reshape the drive-side chain stay to better handle the loads from the drivetrain, while keeping the non-drive stay svelte for weight savings.

5. EXTERNALLY-MACHINED HEAD TUBE

A technique Cannondale has used for years, excess material is pre-cisely machined out of the low stress areas of the head tube, saving significant weight with no loss of strength.

6. TAPER-BUTTED TUBES

Like the legendary CAAD frames of the past, the CAADX features 6061 aluminum which has been taper-butted and heat-treated to a T6 hard-ness. The smooth transitions provided by taper-butting eliminate the internal stress risers of traditionally-butted frames, again allowing a lighter, stronger frame.
