canola report

The Canola project was carried on between the 18th of July 2012 and the 18th of September 2012, and it covered the 23 most important locations where we searched for canola in train marshalling yards, harbours or near biodiesel and oil factories. We found canola and gathered canola samples from 14 locations; in 9 locations we found none.

We have tested an overall of 174 samples and found none positive.

We didnt encounter any major problems with the authorities.

Walking on the railroad from Bucuresti Triaj Station to Bucuresti Triaj Depot, we found no traces of canola. When we almost lost our hope, we found some plants near the Depot.

Our exploration began from Harman, near Brasov, where, after we roamed on about 2 miles of railroad and not nding anything, we decided to get back to the city, to the Triaj Station. When we got there and saw that the place didnt quite resemble a train station and after not nding anything cogent, we caught sight of Brasov CFR Depot and headed to it. Instead of the fact that there were two Restricted Area panels and a man guarding the gate, we managed to pass through it and to explore the whole Depot. We found no traces of canola in there, too.

In Ploiesti Triaj, after a few steps, we found the rst canola plants. It seemed like we have canola all around us. We managed to gather a great deal of samples until a train dispatcher, sent by the Rail Transport Police in the Triaj station, warned us about the fact that we were o-limits in a Railroad Safety Zone and told us that we have to get o the tracks.

The canola was dry in Constanta, but we managed to identify it and to gather samples of husks with seeds. In the marshalling yard, at about 300 meters from the station, we found a few bulks of dry canola. After we gathered the samples, we set o to the harbour. The harbour was full of restrictions, video cameras, guards and even patrols. The rst canola plants that we found were between some railtracks inside the harbour, where we asked a guard if we can take a look around; the next ones we found were near the edge of a road inside Gate 6.

The railtracks at Lehliu were newly remade, so the vegetation in the rail area was scarce. We didnt found any canola there, but walking on the railtracks from the railway station to the biodiesel factory we found at least 10 bulks, with a width of almost a half a meter, of canola seeds, which seemed to be from the same transportation. We gathered two samples from the bulks.

In Teius, we have one of the biggest marshalling yard in the country. We managed to explore a large part of it, even after we have been warned by the authorities through the stations speakers to leave the railtracks. At a moment, a train dispatcher came by and told us that we could get nes if we get cought on the railtracks by the police. We encountered no real problems with the authorities, though.

In Craiova, we found only a few canola plants and to nd them, we had to explore a quite big perimeter.

In Drobeta, we couldnt make our way through the guards to the harbour, but from what could be seen from outside, the perimeter of the harbour was made entirely of concrete so, not too many plants could grow in there.

In Simeria, after we had made our way through the station, after about 200 meters, we encountered a rather peevishly train dispatcher who told us that the access in the area is restricted and we have to leave that instant. We left and tried to avoid that part of the marshalling yard and explore the rest. However, we havent had any luck on canola in Simeria.

In Iasis marshalling yard, we had a distressing view; it seemed more like abandoned and most of the tracks werent used for a long time. No trace of canola.

In Golesti we found lots of canola plants. In spite of the fact that we couldnt manage to cover the whole perimeter because of the people around working at the railtracks, we managed to gather lots of samples. At a moment, a policeman from the Rail Transports came by and asked for an ID; we had no problems further.

We havet managed to explore the whole perimeter in Suceavas marshalling yard, because at a small distance from where we were, in the direction we had to go, there was a pack of dogs who could trigger the alarm any time, and the marshalling yard is placed between two observation posts with a great overview of the entire zone.

In the marshalling yard in Pascani, we found only a canola plant. But returning in the railstation, we found four more.

To our suprise, in Dej, instead of the fact that there were lots of people around, we could explore the perimeter with no man to disturb us. We found only a few canola plants, which prooved to be negative.

In Galati, we rst visited the biodiesel factory inside SC Intfor SA, on which we found a few canola plants. Then, we left for the Prutul Oil Factory, where we found only some sunower plants. The next target was the harbour Docuri Galati, where we arrived over some extra-watchful guards who we couldnt trick to let us explore the perimeter. However, we found some canola plants in the harbours vicinity. The last location seen in Galati was the Barbosis marshalling yard, where there was no trace of canola.

In Arad there were lots of canola around. We have gathered many samples; would have gathered more, just that at a time, a man with helmet and a reective vest has crossed our path and told us that we were walking in a working site and we have no right to be there. We had to leave the spot.

In Adjud we found only a few canola plants scattered around in the marshalling yard. We found it weird that the city was invaded by mustard plants. No trouble in Adjud.

In Caransebes, we had a hard time in locating the marshalling yard, which we explored fully, but with no success in canola, although it seemed like more railtracks were used than in the other marshalling yards. No problems encountered.
