Precautions

1) This camera is not resistant to water and should not be used out-doorp in snow or rain. lf accidentally dropped in water, contact anauthorized Canon service facility. Keep the camera out of salt sprayand protect it from excessive humidity. lf used at the beach, clean ilthoroughly afterward with a dry cloth.

2) Do not attempt to disassemble the camera yourself. Always take it toan authorized Canon service facility for repair.

3) Remove the battery if you do not expect to use the camera for aboutthree weeks or longer.

4) When storing the camera, wrap it in a clean, soft cloth and place it in acool, dry, dust-free place. Be sure to keep the camera out of directsunlight, and away from "hot spots" such as the trunk or rear windowshelf of a car. Avoid places where moth balls are used, and in extremehumidity, use a desiccant.

5) Carefully check the camera's operation after lengthy storage.6) The battery may explode or cause burns if disassembled, recharged,

shorted, exposed to high temperatures, or disposed of in fire.7) Film passing through X-ray examinations at airports may be exposed

and ruined even if loaded in the camera. Request a hand-checkedinspection to avoid damage.

8) Aerosol spray dust removers are not recommended for the shutter cur-ta in.

9) Condensation is a problem when bringing cold equipment into a warmroom. lf the autofocus optics cloud over, accuracy may be seriouslyaffected. Before entering a warm room, put equipment in a plastic bagso that condensation forms on the outside of the bag.

lO)Color reproduction may be adversely affected if film is left in the cam-era for a long time. Always develop exposed film promptly.. Please see page 58 for camera care information.

IV. OTHER INFORMATION

The following section contains data designed to help you get the bestfrom you camera. lt contains an explanation of the basic terms used inphotography, some tips on how to use the camera's various functionswhen laking pictures, and an introduction to some of the acceSsoriesavailable.

The shutter integrated in the camera body regulates the length of time that the film

is exposed to l ight. The length of t ime that the shutter remains open is cal led the

shutter speed. ihe camera displays the shutter speed on the LCD panel and in the

viewfinder, in a range from 2000 (1/2000th of a second) to 30" (30 seconds), and

bu lb .

Integrated into the lens, the aperture is anopen ing wh ich can be w idened and nar -r o w e d t o r e g u l a t e t h e a m o u n t o f l i g h tal lowed to enter the camera. The size oi theopen ing is ca l led the aper tu re va lue . Thecamera displays the aperture value on theLCD panel and in the viewfinder in a rangef r o m 1 . 0 t o 3 2 , a l t h o u g h t h i s m a y v a r ydepending on the lens used.

50

ffiq.[d

The f i lm speed is a value which indicatesthe level of the f i lm's sensit ivi ty to l ight, asset by the ISO (lnternational StandardizationOrganization). The camera displays the f i lmspeed on the display panel in a range from6-6400.The higher the ISO number, the higher thefi lm's sensit ivi ty to l ight. While f i lm with ahigher sensit ivi ty is more suitable for low-l ight si tuations. The higher the f i lm speedfi lm, the lower the level of l ight required forphotography, and so pictures can even betaken in dark places.

Depth-of-f ield is the area that is in focus in front of and behind the subject which isalso in focus. When the aperture is smaller ( i .e. when the aperture value is larger),the area in focus is more extensive, and this is cal led a deep depth-of-f ield.Conversely, when the aperture is larger ( i .e. when the apedure value is smaller),the depth-of{ ield becomes shal lower.

Depth-ofJield has the fol lowing propert ies.

(1) The larger the aperture value, the deeper the depth-of-f ield.. . . increase the aperture value to create a feel ing of depth.

(2) With the same aperture value, a greater depth-of-f ield wil l be obtained using alens with a shorter focal length... .using a wide-angle lens or the wide angle sett ing on your zoom lens wil l cre-ate a feel ing of expansiveness and depth.

(3) With the same aperture value, a greater depth-of-field can be achieved the fur-ther away the main subject in focus is.

(4) l f the subject in focus is in the center f ield, the depth-ofJield wil l be shal lower.
