SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The following precautions should be observed when servicing.

1. Since many parts in the unit have special safety-related characteristics, always use genuine CANON replacement parts.

Especially critical parts in the power circuit block should not be replaced with other makes.

Critical parts are marked with ! in the schematic diagrams.

2. When servicing, observe the original lead dress. If a short circuit is found, replace all parts which have been overheated or damaged

by the short circuit.

3. After servicing, see to it that all the protective devices such as insulation barriers, insulation papers shields are properly installed.

4. After servicing, make the following leakage current checks to prevent the customer from being exposed to shock hazards.

4-1 Leakage Current Cold Check

1) Unplug the AC cord and connect a jumper between the two prongs on the plug.

2) Measure the resistance value, with an ohmmeter, between the jumpered AC plug and each exposed metallic cabinet part

on the equipment such as screwheads, connectors, control shafts, etc. When the exposed metallic part has a return path to

the chassis, the reading should be between 1MΩ and 5.2MΩ. When the exposed metal does not have a return path to the

chassis, the reading must be ∞.

4-2 Leakage Current Hot Check

1) Plug the AC cord directly into the AC outlet. Do not use an isolation transformer for this check.

2) Connect a 1.5KΩ 10 watt resistor, paralleled by 0.15µF capacitor, between each exposed metallic parts on the unit and a

good earth ground such as a water pipe, as shown in the figure below.

3) Use an AC voltmeter, with 1000Ω/volt or more sensitivity, to measure the potential across the resistor.

4) Check all exposed metallic parts of the cover (Cable connection, Handle bracket, metallic cabinet.

Screwheads, Metallic overlays, etc), and measure the voltage at each point.

5) Reverse the AC plug in the AC outlet and repeat each of the above measurements.

6) The potential at any point should not exceed 0.75V RMS.

A leakage current tester (FLUKE MODEL : 8000A equivalent) may be used to make the hot checks.

Leakage current must not exceed 0.5 milliamp.

In case a measurement is outside of the limits specified, there is a possibility of a shock hazard, and corrective action must

be taken before returning the instrument to the customer.

1-2 Development ObjectivesCompact cameras featuring high-powered zoom from 7x to 10x have been introduced by competing manu-facturers and are gaining market share. In a body that is approximately the size of the PowerShot A series, the PowerShot SX100 IS features a 10xzoom lens with lens-shift type image stabilizer. The camera was developed to offer easy shooting coveringthe full range from wide angle to telephoto. Core-spec features such as 8-megapixel CCD and DIGIC III arecomplemented by Face Detect AF/AE/FE, red-eye correction, Auto ISO shift, and many other attractivefunctions. Thanks to the addition of a Face Selector button, the face detection AF function has become eveneasier to use.The PowerShot SX100 IS merges the concepts of the PowerShot G series and A series into a new series thatis bound to meet the new demands of a market.

1-3 DesignConceptCompared to the PowerShot S5 IS which also has a high-power zoom lens, the new model has beendesigned to offer user friendly form as a compact model that blends with everyday life.

Shape highlightsContinuously flowing rounded form seamlessly joins the front and rear sides. This form concept alsoextends to the grip section and results in a simple shape without brusqueness that still provides secureholding characteristics. The top section has the pop-up flash common to all high-power zoom models, with a sculpture-like cutshape that emphasizes the high power zoom capability. The layout of the operation controls is simple with eliminating complex impression that makes user-friendly and approachable appearance also to novice users.

Color highlightsTwo color variations are available, one in stately black that evokes the PowerShot S5 IS and one in lightsilver giving a light and airy feeling. The light silver version creates a transparent new image with atwo-tone finish employing a combination of matte and glossy coated parts.

Flash height has been kept low to emphasize body compactness.

Body coloring is stately black or light silver with subdued contrast

Controls are highly approachable and user friendly

Overall shape is smooth and gives a sense of ease

Sculpture-like character emphasizes flash section as in PowerShot S series

Metal parts in lens barrel section emphasize high-power zoom as in PowerShot S series
