We driveby deluxe motor coach north to the scenic hills of Umbria, and arrive in Assisi, a hill town sanctified by St. Francis ofAssisi. Early afternoon can be spent at rest. In a chapel of the Basilica we celebrateHOLY MASS as a devout beginning of our Pilgrimage. Dinner will be at our hotel.

D AssisiThursday, April 24 - This morning we celebrate MASS at the tomb of St Francis in theBasilica ofSt. Francis. Afterwards we will be given a tour of the Basilica with its magnifi-cent frescos by Giotto depicting the life ofthe saint. It is here that in 1263 Pope UrbanIV proclaimed the authenticity of a Eucharistic miracle, whereby the Sacred Host had bledduring a Mass celebrated in nearby Bolsena. We can still see the Corporal that is associatedwith the miracle displayed within the Cathedral ofOrvieto. From this event the Churchinstituted the Feast of Corpus Christi. The Cathedral's facade is adorned with a splendidand world-famous mosaic. Our visit will be highlighted by our celebration of the HOLYEUCHARIST in the Cathedral's Chapel ofthe Corporal. There are some fine places forlunch on our own, and some very tempting shopping is available. We continue travelingsouth to Rome, the Eternal City, and arrive to check into our hotel. SOLEMN DECLARATION OF SAINTHOOD OF POPE JOHN PAUL II AND POPE JOHN XXIIISOLEMN CANONIZATION MASS in ST. PETER'S SQUARE

His Holiness Pope Francis will preside as we join with an enormous gathering of worshipers in St. Peter's Square.

Pope Jon Paul II was the second longest serving Pope in history and and the first non-Italian since 1523. He was Popefrom October 16, 1978, to April 2, 2005 -- for over 26 years. He was aclaimed as one ofthe most influential leaders ofthe 20th century. He was credited with helping to end Communist rule in his native Poland and eventually all of Europe. He has been praised for a firm and orthodox stand on the teachings of the Church, and his implementation of severalpapal documents pertaining to the role of the Church in the modem world. He was one of the most traveled worldleaders in history, visiting 129 countries during his pontificate. A universal appeal to Catholic Youth was exemplified byhis inaugurating World Youth Day. Members of our pilgrimage group will have something in common with the majority ofthe tens of thousands in St.Peter's Square -- that so many of us have been in the presence ofthis newly proclaimed saint, and may have even met him in person. Not only do the miracles which have been authenticated since his death givetestimony, but the deep and personal sanctity in his life of prayer shine forth to us. On December 19,2009, Pope JohnPaul II was proclaimed venerable by Pope Benedict XVI, and was Beatified on May 1, 2011, after the Congregation ofCauses of Saints attributed one miracle to him, the healing of a French nun fom Parkinson's disease. The second miracleelevating him to Sainthood was the cure of a Costa Rican woman of a brain aneurysm.

Pope John XXIII was born on November 25, 1881, as the fourth child offourteen children born in a Lombard villageto sharecroppers He died at age 81 on June 3, 1963. He was elected Pope on October 28, 1858, and served asSupreme Pontiff for only four-and-a-half-years. In his short time in office, however, he surprised those who expectedhim to be a caretaker Pope by calling the historic Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). John XXIII is affectionatelyknown, especially among Italians, as "II Papa Buono," the "Good Pope." Less than two months after his election hebecame the first Pope since 1870 to make pastoral visits to his Diocese of Rome. On Christmas Day 1958 he visitedBambino Gesu Hospital, which is located next door to the North American College, as well as Santo Spirito Hospital afew blocks from the Vatican. The following day he visited Rome's Regina Coeli prison, where he told the inmates: "Youcould not come to me, so I came to you." In his service as Apostolic Delegate to Turkey (1934-1944) and as Nuncio toFrance (1944-1953) Cardinal Roncalli used his office to save countless lives of Jewish people from the Holocaust, leading some to consider him as a Righteous Gentile. His personal piety was extolled by those who served close to him. After verification of a miraculous cure through prayer to Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul II declared him Beatified onSeptember 3, 2000. Bypassing the traditionally required second miracle, Pope Francis declared John XXTII a saint, which is being solemnly declared today.

Afternoon: After the Canonization our bus will return to the hotel. We will have free time for exploring on our own. Some may even venture an ascent to the top of the Dome ofSt. Peter's, and be rewarded with a fantastic view of VaticanCity and all of Rome. Many may take the time to go and find the many popular attractions of Old Rome: the Pantheon,Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Castel Sant' Angelo, and Piazza Navona. Rome's beautiful churches are richlyembellished with artistic masterpieces. This evening dinner will be served at our hotel. B & D Rome
