CANOPYING THE DRENCHED LIVES Bharata Mata College served as a Relief Camp when Kerala was struck with the devastang flood in the month of August. The relief camp, under the leadership of the manager of the college, Rev. Fr. Jacob G Palackappilly was open from 16th to 25th Aug 2018. The members of the faculty and 290 students of the college wholeheartedly offered their voluntary services to the affected ones. The college accommodated 192 families which included 300 men, 296 women and 180 children. Special aenon was given to pregnant women, old people and paents. The hospital cases were dealt with utmost care and sincerity. Food, drinking water, clothes, mats, medicines and all the other staonary items necessary for the stay were provided from the very first day onwards. The college canteen, the main source of food took the best care to provide the best food to the inmates. Food was also collected from the CUSAT campus where the Navy provided food. The medical camp under the leadership of Sr.Tessy, Dept. of Commerce was served by 27 doctors, 27 health workers, nurses and a number of volunteers from BMC. . The ‘Collecon Centre’ which was a part of the BMC store was made into a separate relief godown on August 18th under Mr.Sunil, the Village Officer, Vazhakala. There were around 20 relief centers under BMC Collecon Centre. A loon was prepared in the college that could be used for cleaning the post flood debris. This loon was included in the kit that was provided to the inmates as they leſt the camp. Cleaning kits and food grains were distributed to the inmates once they leſt the camp. Clothes, cleaning materials and food materials were also distributed to various areas in Kuanad. Thiruvonam The camp celebrated Thiruvonam by organizing cultural events. Folk songs and dances were performed and onakodi was distributed. Thiruvona Payasam was also served to the inmates. Talks were given to the inmates to mentally equip them to 1

The BMC flood relief camp was blessed with a number of prominent persons. Cardinal Mar George Alencherry (Major Arch Bishop), Mar Sebastian Adayanthrath (Auxiliary Bishop), Mar Jose Puthenveetil (Auxialiary Bishop), Mar Sebastine Vaniyampurackal (Curia Bishop), Mar Jacob Manathodath (Apostolic Administrator), Sri. P.T Thomas (MLA), Sri. K.V Thomas (MP),Sri. Ibrahim Kunju (MLA), Sri. Benny Behanan (Ex MLA) Smt. Medha Padkar (Environmentalist/Indian Social Activist), Sri. C.R Neelakandan (Environmentalist/Indian Social Activist), Sri. Arun Gopi (Director), Sri. Neeraj Madhavan (Actor), Sri. Roopesh Peethanbaran (Actor), Ms. Preyaga Martin (Actress), Ms. Nitha (Radio Jockey, Red FM),Sri. Chethan Jayalal (Actor) and Sri. Jayaprakash (Navy Officer) visited the camp and supported the flood victims.

Yousaf (Ward Counsellor), Smt.Vrinda (Thahasildhar Kanayannur Taluk) and Sri. Shibu (Thrikkakara Municipal Secretary) are the officials who always offered their support to the camp .

The Manager of the college Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly hoisted the flag to kick start the Independence Day celebrations. The students along with the NCC, NSS, BeFORE and Music Club organized various cultural programmes as a tribute to Mother India. In the afternoon the college celebrated BMC day which brought together the families of the BMC staff. The presence of Cardinal Mar George Alencherry,

Major Archbishop of Syro Malabar Catholic Church graced the occasion. He emphasised the importance of the underprivileged strata of society and also about their economic upliftment. The switch on ceremony of Radio BMC, which was a moment of pride and honour was also held. The families enjoyed as they participated in the games and cultural programmes.

Beach Cleaning

The Postgraduate Dept of English in collaboration with Clean Fort Kochi Foundation and Couch Surfing Volunteer Group organised a mass Beach clean up at Vasco Square, Fort Kochi. Chrysalis’19, an inter-collegiate literary and cultural fest for a cause was flagged off by Ms.Shiny Mathew,Town Planning Committee Chairperson. The fest stands unique in its initiatives as it is done for a social cause and the department works for the same throughout the year. The beach cleaning drive earned wide coverage in the media and bagged letters of appreciation from Kochi Municipal Corporation and Clean Fort Kochi Foundation.

Association Inauguration

AZORA, the English Literary Association was officially inaugurated by the film director Benjith Baby and the actor Anto James. The inaugural ceremony was followed by the oath taking of the new office bearers. The toppers of the academic year 2017-18 and the students who qualified the NET were felicitated on the occasion. The after movie of CHRYSALIS’18, the annual inter-collegiate fest of the Post graduate Department of English was released by the manager of the college, Rev. Fr. Jacob G. Palackappilly . The official function was followed by an interactive session by the chief guests. The cultural programmes of the students added colours to the function.

Tribute to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Victims

The students of the Dept. of Zoology paid homage to the people who lost their lives in the atomic bomb explosion by the USA in Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug 6th & 9th respectively in 1945. The students assembled in front of the college to spread the message of Peace. They made 1000 origamy cranes

(SENBASURU) and hung it on a tree in the front of the college, which the Japanese consider as a holy one to get their wish granted. The Vice-Principal Dr. Sr. Jaya Rose delivered a ‘message’ on the occasion which was followed by a students’ rally in the campus.

ZOOFEST 2018

ZOOFEST 2018, the Intercollegiate Academic Fest of the Ernakulam Zone jointly organised by Zoological Society of Kerala (ZSK) and the Department of Zoology Bharata Mata College Thrikkakara was held on Saturday, 4th August 2018 based on the focal theme Chordate Diversity. Around 120 students and 13 teachers participated in the programme apart from the ZSK office bearers. A variety of competitions were held separately for I, II and III B.Sc. Zoology students. Bharata Mata College bagged the maximum points (63).

1. Anagha K E of I B.Sc. Zoology won II prize in the Individual Doubles category in the 33rd Junior State Level Tennikoit Championship for boys and girls held at Mannar.

2. Arya Subhash of II B.Sc. Zoology attended the Pre-IGC RDC NCC Camp from 15.09.2018 to 24.09.2018 at Marthoma School Muhamma.

3. Haripriya, 1st Bsc Zoology secured 3rd position in Newspaper Reading competition conducted by the department of Hindi as part of Hindi week celebrations.

Flood Relief Camp & Food Materials Distribution

BeFORE held a flood relief camp in Alappuzha un-der the guidance of Rev. Fr. Jacob .G. Palackappilly, (Manager BMC). The club also took initiative to dis-tribute food materials to the needy people of Thera, a small hamlet which is 16 km inside the forest area.

A meeting was conducted at Puthenvelikkara Pan-chayath after the flood to reframe the activities un-der UBA. President, ICDS Supervisor, Kudumbasree Chairperson,ward members and other officials were present on the occasion. The two important sugges-tions made during the meeting are:

• As the Panchayat cannot collect the accurate data about the loss incurred in self employment programme in flood, Bharata Mata College will help collecting the accurate data ward wise.

• Awareness classes and psychological support needed for the anganwadi children and their parents to be provided by the college

Bharta Mata College has already begun the data collection and organizing awareness classes. Stu-dents from Bharata Mata College visit Puthenve-likkara Panchayath every Friday and Saturday from the month of September. So far the students have covered 200 households to find out the loss of self employment units over 3 wards.

Water Purifier Distribution at Kuttanad

Bharata Mata College, under the initiative of BeFORE provided 100(50+50) water purifiers to the rural ar-eas of Kuttanad.

COrN hArVEST AT BhArATA MATA COLLEGE

The students of Bharata Mata College, Thrikkakara under the initiative of BeFORE harvested corn from 40 cents of land within the campus. The chief guest of the program was Malayalam film actors Sunny Wayne and Jacob Gregory. A divine touch was provided by Rev. Fr Jacob Chakkiyath and Rev.Fr. Jacob .G. Palack-appilly, (Manager BMC). The corn was harvested by the students along with the actors and teachers. The harvested corn was cooked and served for everyone. The event was coloured by cultural programmes like dance and the craft work of the students.

PAPEr PEN

As a part of moving to eco friendly culture Club B4 initiated to make paper pen for the national seminar conducted by the Department of Taxation, Bharata Mata College Thrikkakara. The club BeFORE students made 150 paper pens and sold to Department of Tax-tion at a cost of 5 rupees per pen. This provided an

income for the students who made the paper pens.
