Can’t get you outta my head

Kylie Minogue

Andrew GoodwinFirstly, we see the music video to be extremely voyeuristic as it sexualises Kylie throughout the whole video, mainly through camera shots, angles, costumes and dance moves. This links with Steve Archer’s theory of star image as Kylie’s star image has always been perceived as fun loving and sexy which is exactly how she is portrayed in this music video. This is seen in the pictures below.

We also see close ups of the artist, which enables her star image to be recognised, most of the close ups used in this music video are also voyeuristic due to Kylie’s makeup emphasising her lips, this is an idea I wish to take to our music video and perhaps expand on by getting our artist to kiss the camera lens.

The genre characteristics throughout this music video are clear. They all point out that the music video is a pop video. This is all characterized through the dance routines, the costumes and makeup. The dance routines seem simple and can be altered for fans to do which most of the audience of the pop genre will wish to do when listening to this type of music. The costumes are extravagant and different which is another popular characteristic of pop music videos, this is similar with makeup.

Finally, for Andrew Goodwin, there is also a small amount of intertextuality of the robot like dance routine in the music video, as this has been seen before in Madonna’s music video ‘Vogue’. The two artists are similar in some ways yet are highly different but both will be large influences for my music video as they are both extremely successful in what they do.

Steve ArcherPerformance and narrative is one of Steve Archer’s theories, however in this music video only performance is used, this is mostly what happens in pop videos as they are meant to be fun and upbeat.

Most of the cuts (although not all) are when the beats kick in on the music and during the changes of lyrics. This makes the music video fast paced and fitting with the music as if the music can not be without the music video.

Bright lightening is also a key part of the music video, which is partly a genre characteristic but also highlights the fun behind the pop genre.

Kylie’s star image is a huge factor, as she is seen as fun, flirty, careless and sexy which is how she is portrayed in this video.
