Ensino Fundamental. Para cada música foram desenvolvidas atividades de

grammar/vocabulary, listening, reading e class discussion.

Assim, o aluno além de cantar, poderá também:

• Aperfeiçoar seu vocabulário;

• Praticar a compreensão auditiva;

• Fixar estruturas gramaticais;

• Ampliar seus conhecimentos culturais;

• Discutir sobre assuntos do cotidiano.

READING

Elvis Aaron Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer, musician and actor. A cultural icon, he is commonly referred to by his first name and as the "The King of Rock 'n' Roll" or "The King". Initial influences came through his family's attendance at the Assembly of God, a Pentecostal Holiness church. Rolling Stone Magazine wrote: "Gospel pervaded Elvis' character and was a defining and enduring influence all of his days". Presley himself stated, "Since I was two years old, all I knew was gospel music. That music became such a part of my life it was as natural as dancing”. In 1954, Presley began his career as one of the first performers of rockabilly, a fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong back beat. His novel versions of existing songs, mixing "black" and "white" sounds, made him popular and controversial especially

because of his uninhibited stage and television performances. Presley had a versatile voice and had unusually wide success encompassing other genres, including gospel, blues, ballads and pop. In the 1960s, Presley made the majority of his thirty-one movies—mainly poorly reviewed, but financially successful musicals. In 1968, he returned with acclaim to live music in a television special, and thereafter performed across the U.S. He is one of the best-selling and most influential artists in the history of popular music. Health problems, drug dependency and other factors led to his premature death at age 42.

Unit  2   PERHAPS LOVE

Placido Domingo

Perhaps love is like a resting place A shelter from the storm It exists to give you comfort It is there to keep you warm And in those times of trouble When you are most alone The memory of love will bring you home Perhaps love is like a window Perhaps an open door It invites you to come closer It wants to show you more And even if you lose yourself And don't know what to do The memory of love will see you through Oh, Love to some is like a cloud To some as strong as steel For some a way of living For some a way to feel And some say love is holding on And some say letting go And some say love is everything And some say they don't know Perhaps love is like the ocean Full of conflict, full of pain Like a fire when it's cold outside Thunder when it rains If I should live forever And all my dreams come true My memories of love will be of you And some say love is holding on And some say letting go And some say love is everything Some say they don't know Perhaps love is like the ocean Full of conflict, full of pain Like a fire when it's cold outside Or thunder when it rains If I should live forever And all my dreams come true My memories of love will be of you

 READING

  Read the text and Mark T (true) or F (false) according to it.

Weddings A wedding is the ceremony in which two people are united in marriage. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of wedding vows by the couple, presentation of a ring or rings, and a public proclamation of marriage by an authority figure or religious leader.

Common elements across cultures A  number  of  cultures  adopt  the  western  custom  of  a  bride  wearing  a  white  dress.  This tradition came to symbolize purity  in the Victorian era (despite popular misconception,  the white  dress  did  not  indicate  virginity,  which was  symbolized  by  the  face  veil). Within  the ‘white wedding’ tradition, a white dress and veil would not have been considered appropriate for a second or third wedding of a widow or a divorced.   Exchanging rings may be the oldest and most universal symbol of marriage, but the origins are unclear. The ring’s circular shape represents perfection and never-ending love.

Wedding in the middle ages The major difference between the weddings of the Middle Ages and now was the reasoning behind them. Medieval marriage ceremonies depended on the social class of the two to be married. People of the middle ages were grouped into two groups: the noble class and the peasants. The nobles cared about their name and there social stature thus arranging marriages for their children was commonly known. The children would have a set spouse by the age of ten or eleven. The main reason for this practice was to keep success and the acquisition of wealth in families. The marriages were matters of business rather then love. This was not so true with the peasants; peasants’ marriages were more sincere or would take place due to a pregnancy. Unlike weddings today they depended on who you were rather then who you wished to be or wish to be married to.

Unit 3  HELP  The Beatles

Help, I need somebody, Help, not just anybody, Help, you know I need someone, help! When I was younger, so much younger than today I never needed anybody's help in any way. But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured, Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors. Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being round. Help me, get my feet back on the ground, Won't you please, please help me. And now my life has changed in oh so many ways, My independence seems to vanish in the haze. But every now and then I feel so insecure, I know that I just need you like I've never done before. Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being round. Help me, get my feet back on the ground, Won't you please, please help me. When I was younger, so much younger than today, I never needed anybody's help in any way. But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured, Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors. Help me if you can, I'm feeling down And I do appreciate you being round. Help me, get my feet back on the ground, Won't you please, please help me, help me, help me, oh.

                                                                                              READING    After reading about a way of asking for help, answer the questions.

SOS SOS is the commonly used description for the international Morse code distress signal (· · · — — — · · ·). This distress signal was first adopted by the German government in radio regulations on April 1, 1905, and became the worldwide standard when it was included in the second International Radiotelegraphic Convention, which was signed on November 3, 1906, becoming effective on July 1, 1908. SOS remained the maritime distress signal until 1999, when it was replaced by the Global Maritime Distress Safety System. From the beginning, the SOS distress signal has actually consisted of a continuous sequence of three-dits/three-dahs/three-dits, all run together without letter spacing. In International Morse Code, three dits form the letter S, and three dahs make the letter O, so "SOS" became an easy way to remember the correct order of the dits and dashes. In popular usage, SOS became associated with phrases such as "Save Our Ship" and "Save Our Souls". These were a later development, most likely used to help remember the correct letters.

Unit 5  CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF OF YOU  Gloria Gaynor

You're just too good to be true. Can't take my eyes off of you. You'd be like heaven to touch. I wanna hold you so much. At long last love has arrived. And I thank God I'm alive. You're just too good to be true. Can't take my eyes off of you. Pardon the way that I stare. There's nothing else to compare. The sigh of you leaves me weak. There are no words left to speak. But if you feel like I feel. Please let me know that it's real. You're just too good to be true. Can't take my eyes off of you. What is love?

____________ is the most extreme expression of positive emotion. It usually refers to a deep, ineffable feeling of tenderly caring for another __________. More often than any other emotion, love is the subject of ___________, literature, and art. Every person searches for love, each in his own special way. Love includes a variety of different _____________, from the passionate desire and intimacy of _______________ to the nonsexual emotional closeness of familial and ________________ to the profound devotion of _______________. Love in its various forms acts as a major facilitator of interpersonal ________________. Whatever type of love we may be describing, the dominant feeling is still an attraction to another person and a ______________, often of an unselfish nature to that person. The feeling of love is generally increased when our love is returned by the object of our emotion, whether it be a parent, child, husband, wife or potential lover. In romantic love we tend to equate love and ____________ and these two concepts (we cannot rightly call sex an emotion, although emotion is involved) dominate much of our personal worlds. Frequently, love is not enough to see a relationship through to fulfillment. However, love is a good place to start.

Useful vocabulary: Ineffable: indescritível concepts: conceito, definição rightly: corretamente tenderly: afetuoso although: apesar to search: procurar desire: desejo to see through: levar (a um determinado fim) closeness: proximidade fulfillment: plenitude, preenchimento although: apesar unselfish: altruísta (não egoísta)

We are the champions We Are the Champions is a power ballad written by Freddie Mercury, recorded and performed by Queen for their 1977 album News of the World. One of their most famous and popular songs, it has since become an anthem for sporting victories and has been often used or referenced in popular culture. The song has been played to celebrate numerous sports championships.

• The song was played in 2002, UEFA Champions League Cup Final, after Real Madrid beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen(2-1) at Hampden Park, Glascow, Scotland.

• It was played at the finals of 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, after Italy won the cup. Usually, the winner of the German soccer championship plays the song during the celebration.

• Fernando Alonso sung the song after winning the 2005 Chinese Grand Prix, securing the Constructors' title for his team, Renault. The team later released an MP3 of the song being "played" by the engine they had used in that season, with the different notes played by changing engine speed.

                                                                                            READING   Read the text and answer the questions

In the song “I can see clearly now the rain is gone” the rain is a metaphor meaning something bad or disturbing. But…What is a Metaphor? Some people think of metaphors as nothing more than the sweet stuff of songs and poems--Love is a jewel, or a rose, or a butterfly. But in fact all of us speak and write and think in metaphors every day. They can't be avoided: metaphors are built right into our language. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two unlike things that have something important in common. The word metaphor itself is a metaphor, coming from a Greek word meaning to "transfer" or "carry across." Metaphors "carry" meaning from one word, image, or idea to another. Some metaphors are so common that we may not even notice that they are metaphors. Take the familiar metaphor of life as a journey, for example. We find it in advertising slogans:

• "Life is a journey, travel it well." (United Airlines)

• "Life is a journey. Enjoy the Ride." (Nissan) The same metaphor appears in the lyrics to the Aerosmith song "Amazing": Life's a journey not a destination And I just can't tell just what tomorrow brings. (from the album A Little South Of Sanity) See this last one: Mrs. Smith, “I’m a night owl, Tom's an early bird. We're different species," Calling a person a "night owl" or an "early bird" is an example of a common metaphor, one that most native speakers will readily understand.   1. Write a definition for metaphor in Portuguese. 2. Now that you’ve reviewed the meaning of metaphor, can you find other examples of

metaphor in the lyrics of the song “I can see clearly now the rain is gone”? 3. Interpret the meaning of the metaphors you’ve found.

"The Girl from Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema") is a well-known bossa nova song, a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s that won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. It was written in 1962, with music by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes with English lyrics written later by Norman Gimbel. Myth has it The Girl from Ipanema was inspired by Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now Helô Pinheiro), a fifteen-year-old girl living in Montenegro Street of the fashionable Ipanema district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Daily, she would stroll past the popular "Veloso" bar-café on her way to the beach, attracting the attention of regulars Jobim and Moraes. The myth is truth in that the composers did know Helô Pinto, and later attributed the song's composition to her. In the winter of 1962, they watched her pass by the Veloso bar, not just to the beach, but in the quotidian course of her life. The Veloso bar, renamed "A Garota de Ipanema" - The Girl From Ipanema, by its owners, still exists in Ipanema. It is easy to imagine why they noticed her — Helô was a five-foot-eight-inch-tall (1.73m) gimlet-eyed brunette living in Rua Montenegro, already the objet du désir of many of Veloso patrons, where she would enter to buy cigarettes (for her mother) and leave to a flattering wolf-whistle soundtrack. Since the song became popular, she has become a celebrity.

Primarily the band consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Throughout their career, The Beatles are recognized for leading the mid-1960s musical "British Invasion" into the United States. Their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll. Their clothes, styles, and statements made them trend-setters, and their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s. After the band broke up in 1970, all four members embarked upon solo careers. The Beatles are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music, selling over a billion records internationally. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles number one on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. According to that same magazine, The Beatles' innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s, and their influence on pop culture is still evident today. In 2008, Billboard magazine released a list of top-selling Hot 100 artists; The Beatles reached position 1 again.

Unit 10  LAST KISS  Pearl Jam

Oh where, oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me. She's gone to heaven, so I've got to be good, So I can see my baby when I leave this world. We were out on a date in my daddy's car, we hadn't driven very far. Up in the road, straight ahead, a car was stalled, the engine was dead. I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right. I'll never forget, the sound that night-- the screaming tires, the busting glass, the painful scream that I-- heard last. Oh where, oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me. She's gone to heaven, so I've got to be good, So I can see my baby when I leave this world. When I woke up, the rain was pouring down. There were people standing all around. Something warm flowing through my eyes, but somehow I found my baby that night. I lifted her head, she looked at me and said, "Hold me darling just a little while." I held her close, I kissed her--our last kiss. I'd found the love that I knew I had missed. Well now she's gone, even though I hold her tight. I lost my love, my life-- that night. Oh where, oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me. She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good, So I can see my baby when I leave this world

                                                                                              READING   Causes of car accidents

A report based on British and American crash data, found that driver error, intoxication and other human factors contribute wholly or partially to about 93% of crashes. A survey of British drivers found that most considered themselves to be "good" drivers. Nearly all drivers who had had an accident did not believe themselves to be to blame. One survey of drivers reported that they thought the key elements of good driving were:

• controlling a car including a good awareness of the car's size and capabilities • alertness, reading and anticipating the behavior of other drivers. • reading and reacting to road conditions, weather, road signs and the environment

Although proficiency in these skills is taught and tested as part of the driving exam, a “good” driver can still be at a high risk of accidents because of the feeling of confidence. It can safely be said that many places which look dangerous do not have accidents, or very few. On the other hand, a location that does not look dangerous may have a high crash frequency. The reason for this is simple. If drivers perceive a location as hazardous, they take more care and there are no accidents. Accidents happen when hazardous road or traffic conditions are not obvious at a glance, or where the conditions are too complicated for the limited human machine to perceive and react in the time and distance available.
