Changes To Upcoming 2020 Canterbury Events

Auto Theft Facts Over 750,000 cars and trucks are stolen in the US each year and that number is rising. Vehicle thieves are staying busy. With that thought in mind, a few tips to safeguard vehicles are in order. This information can be found on the internet from a variety of sources from police departments to insurance com-panies to security agencies. A few of the tips are listed here. • Lock your doors • Close the windows • Remove your keys from the vehicle • Do not leave a spare key near your vehicle or under

your car • If possible, park in well-lit areas • Do not leave valuables and packages in your vehicle

especially at holidays • Be alert of your surroundings • Park in the garage, if possible Summer and winter (don’t leave your cars running to warm up) are the best times of the year for thefts to occur. There are a few technological deterrents that may cost a bit more, but worth looking into. They include: • Installing an audible alarm system and anti-theft devices • Installing a tracking system • Installing a vehicle immobilizer system • The top stolen vehicles are: • Honda Civics • Honda Accord • Ford pick ups • Chevrolet pick ups

Annual Canterbury Homeowners Association Meeting Scheduled for October 6th It’s time to save the date and prepare to attend the Canterbury Homeowners Annual Meeting. The Board has tentatively sched-uled the meeting to be held at Chaucer Park on October 6th at 5:30 p.m., weather permitting. We have chosen this outdoor location so that attendees can wear a mask and practice social dis-tancing. Alternative arrangements may be undertaken to hold the Annual Meeting should weather and/or Safer at Home restrictions change. Besides a review of what has been accomplished this year and plans for next year, there will be guest speakers on the program to provide information on what is happening within Southern Jefferson County. The Board has invited the Crime Prevention Deputy for Jefferson County Sheriff who will discuss the recent wave of crimes and things we can do to improve the safety of our com-munity. Hope to see you at the 2020 Annual Meeting!

The Great Solstice Conjunction - Look Ahead to December The Great Conjunction is a rare arrangement of our larg-est planets, Saturn and Jupiter. They come so close together that they appear as one giant and brilliant celestial object. The Great Conjunction happens every 20 years and starts the decades. It’s been linked to great luck and terrible curses. This conjunction has been the source of folklore for centu-ries, as well as modern day stories and movies. In 2020, the Great Conjunction will be a true phenom-enon. The large planets will appear closer than they have since before 1000 AD, and it won’t happen again until the year 7541.To say it’s a rarity is an understatement, and this very special year, it also happens on the winter solstice. Join us in our riverside open space after sunset to view these two planets become one on a truly historic night. Campfire, sto-ryteller, telescope viewing and refreshments included. No pets or tobacco. Household rates are for 2 adults and up to 3 youths at the same address. Under 16 must be with registered adult. When using family rate, make sure to select “Family Rate” for one individual, then add rest of family at “Family Member” rate. —Contact: [email protected]

“Like me, she loves to come to work and she loves to go out and play just as hard,” says Dr. Stevens. “We’re

both motivated by the same great things in life.”

After spending time as a veterinary student at DCAH and falling in love with our state’s great outdoors, Dr. Andy Stevens was motivated to

find a way to call Colorado home.

Truly passionate about his work and equally passionate about his opportunities to play, he

found his four-legged match in Jenga, an 11-year-old Beagle/Pit Bull mix whom he

adopted from a friend.

• Financial Report – HOA Dues have been submitted from 228 homeowners as of August 1st which is only 4 homeowners behind the HOA dues collection from this time last year. Eighty-seven of the HOA dues payments were sub-mitted online through PayPal. A total of 40 homeowners to date who have submitted more than the $75 per year amount for a total collected of $1500.• Architectural/Covenant – There were no Architectural Control requests this month. There were three Covenant complaints – one for a trailer parked in the driveway, a letter was sent and the trailer moved; one for trash left in the yard and damaged siding – a letter was sent but no response yet; and for a boat trailer in the driveway – letter also sent.• Maintenance – Foothills has completed the Chaucer Park work. Other than the large (staked) pine tree in the center of the park which is trying to survive the transplant, the park looks good and the Foothills has fine-tuned the watering so the park is greening up even in spite of the hot/dry weather.• Website – The Calendar of Events is all up to date. The address for the HOA web site is (www.hoacanterbury.com).• Welcoming and Real Estate – Home sales in Canterbury have been very strong this year and several new listings are on the market.• New Business –Starting Wednesday, August 26th from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the fourth Wednesday of every month there will be a food truck located on the Vista View side of Chaucer Park until the end of the year, weather permitting.

• Committee and Events – Due to the continued Covid concerns, the Board has cancelled the Concert in the Park, as well as the post-poned Evening in the Park. It was agreed to leave the Garage sale on the calendar for early August and up to the individual homeowners. The event went off without any problems and it appears that it was very successful. Dumpster Day is still planned for September, and a shredding truck will also be added to that event.

Parrots can do more than mimic words. At least one of them can beat humans in a classic memory game. The LiveScience website reports that an African gray parrot named Griffin defeated 21 Harvard students in the so-called shell game. In the game, an object is placed underneath one of three plastic cups, which are then moved quickly around. The goal is to keep track of which cup the object is under.

Parrot Beats Humans At Shell Game In the experiment, Griffin beat the 21 undergraduates in 12 of 14 games. Researchers note that he may not be average for a parrot, though. He’s 22 years old, and has been the subject of numerous cognitive and communication studies since the age of seven and a half weeks. His owner, a Harvard psychologist, has also taught him how to pronounce about 30 words and understand at least 40, including the names of colors.
