Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus invites the disciples who have been fishing all night to “put out into the deep. . .” Despite their fatigue, they do as Jesus asks because they have faith in him. He not only rewards them with a large catch of fish, but he instructs them to be fishers of men (and women). Today Jesus invites us to take a leap of faith, to take to heart his words that we are to reach out to others and draw them to Christ. To whom will you reach out to in faith?
Dear Parishioners, Please see Greg Pando’s article in this bulletin about the issues we are confronting with the roof at St. John’s Church. The staging may look unattractive but it is allowing access for the testing that is underway. Several weeks ago our parishes implemented the combined bulletin format. Ideally, it allows parish-ioners to keep abreast of their parish activities and also get a sense of what is happening within the Canton Catholic Community. Now that we have had time to get used to this approach we will soon be expanding the bulletin to allow more coverage of past and upcoming events and to restore devotional and ongoing faith formation materials. The Canton Interfaith-Clergy Association is planning a presentation on public prayer for Sunday afternoon, March 10. Following a planning meeting this Friday additional information will be posted on the website and in the bulletin. Yours in Christ,
Father Tom

OFFERTORY - WEEK FEBRUARY 3, 2019
$6,518 Thank you for your continued support.
As you are aware, there are multi-ple locations where the roof on St John’s Church has been “leaking” for quite some time. We are fortu-nate that we have a world leading
manufacturer in roofing systems located in Canton. Thanks to Brian Whelan, the executive VP of roofing sys-tems at Sika Sarnafil Corporation, we have had their en-gineering division working closely with us in testing the existing roof system to determine how we can repair and replace the existing failed roof. Brian happens to be a St John’s School alumnus and a St Gerard’s’ parishion-er, and has taken a personal interest in making sure we receive the best advice.
The existing roof, constructed in 1962 was a tar and gravel roof. This original roof is still in place. In re-cent years, a two inch thick layer of insulation was placed over this tar and gravel roof and a rubber roof membrane attached over the insulation. Over the years, this rubber roof and associated flashing has failed due to lack of maintenance and damage from manually shovel-ing snow off the roof. The existing insulation is wet, and is trapped under temporary roofing repairs. In order to remove and install a new roof sys-tem, the existing roof needs to be able to “pass” certain minimum tests for strength so that a new roof will be resistant to strong winds. Over the past few months, weather permitting we have tested at least four different methods for installing the new roof. All tests have failed. We are now waiting for more favorable weather and temperatures to try one more method. Short of that suc-ceeding, we will be faced with replacing the roof in its entirety. Once we have an engineering solution from Sika Sarnafil, we will be receiving bids from their list of certified roofing contractors and Fr. Tom will be able to present you with the financial and time requirements needed to solve this critical issue. UPDATE:
Currently we have examined the “leak” in the main church roof. I have had the expertise of Wayne Bethoney assisting. We have determined that the issue is condensation over the metal deck. Until the roof and in-sulation is replaced, this will remain an ongoing problem. Gregory L. Pando, Director of Facilities and Operations
Mardi Gras tickets now on sale. You may purchase your tickets after Mass or by calling 781-828-0090. Advance tickets only, please see the Canton Community section of the bulletin for details.
