¿Cuándo se usa el tiempo imperfecto?
• 1. To express Background Information / Conditions (including weather, age, time, and physical description) Often these are things that set the scene of a story / event.
• 2. To express Emotions(thoughts) / Attitudes/habitual actions
• 3. Simultaneous Actions (actions in progress)• 4. On-going Actions (was/were + -ing)• Non-specific period of time
You’ve already learned to use the preterite tense to talk about completed actions in the past. Now you’ll review
another past tense called the imperfect!!
• You can use the imperfect in the following ways:– To speak about background events in a story.– To talk about something you used to do as a
habit. A repeated or habitual activity– To speak about physical characteristics– To express thoughts and Emotions– To express time, age, and weather
• The imperfect tense is also used to refer to actions in the past that occurred over an extended period of time.
• ( I used to walk every day.Yo caminaba cada día.)
• The imperfect tense is also used to "set the stage" for an event that occurred in the past
• (I used to eat paella frequently.Yo comía frecuentemente paella.)
(We were coming home when we saw Juan.Veníamos para casa cuando vimos a Juan.)
• Actions which are not physical, that is feelings and mental actions, usually use the imperfect tense.
• (….Juan was feeling sick.Juan estaba enfermo.)
• The imperfect is frequently associated with phrases that describe the frequency of past actions.
