32 Project two Urban art and grafti ImaoneA Tokyo grafti writer, Imaone’s original style uses graphic design, illustration and grafti. He fnds inspirationinside and outside oJapan, and is afliated to the Grenade Art Gallery, SRK, and Project:Mooncircle. www.imaone.com Skills Develop Japanese-style graftidesigns Learn to trace hand-drawn designs in Illustrator Use anchor points to soten sharp lines 01 First, download a skateboard deck template (there are lots online) – I used one measuring 31x8 inches. The design will need to be printed out at a later stage, so the document is set at 45% othe actual skateboard size. This way the printout othe design will ft onto A3-sized paper. Iyou are using an A4 printer you’ll need to make the template smaller. Computer Arts Projects _Winter 2008 www.computerarts.co.uk Photoshop/Illustrator Design Japanese- style graffiti Tokyo gra writer Imaone demonstrates how to create clean vector lines rom hand-drawn gra fti, which can be used to decorate a skateboard deck It’s been almost 20 years since graffiti first exploded onto the shores of Japan. With styles evolving and splitting across the island, Japanese grawork is no longer simply an imitation oWestern designs: today’s writers are breaking the mould, creating as a means oselexpression rather than just in the name ografti. Recent work boldly displays clear stylistic di erences rom Western grafti: some artists have deployed Japanese characters; others kanji or katakana mixed with influences rom manga, anime or Japanese pop culture. In this project, I’ll show you how to create an authentic- looking Japanes e design oyour own that can be transerred to a skateboard deck. It might seem easier to draw the letters – which here spell ‘Imaone’ – straight onto the board by hand, but I oten use the method described over the ollowing pages because I enjoy outputting perect vector lines through the more analogue method osilkscreening. Only basic design sotware skills are required, but you will need a steady hand and plenty opatience! On your disc You’ll fnd the fles you need to work along with this project on your cover disc, in the Resources older. CAP118.tut_graffiti 32 14/11/08 5:07:44 pm
