WHO WE AREOne of Australia’s leading living infrastructure specialists, we combine plants with scientific research and technology to accelerate the biological power of plants to enhance our built environment. We believe living infrastructure provides our cities with natural beauty, living design and healthier people.

At Junglefy we design, install and maintain all kinds of living infrastructure including green walls, green roofs, façades and podiums. We are the inventors of the world’s first modular Breathing Wall, which has been scientifically proven to clean the air from harmful pollutants including carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

PASSION FOR PLANTS, RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGYJunglefy emerged from a market demand for green walls and roofs along with our personal passion for plants and research. Our quest is to ensure that nature can flourish in an urban environment - both indoors and out.

Research has proven plants make people happy and healthy, particularly in cities, where it’s easy to lose our connection with nature. We have a strong research focus, and we’re continually testing and adapting our systems to scientifically prove living infrastructure is an essential ingredient to the health of our cities both from a functional and aesthetic perspective. We see our cities as places to create urban jungles.

We want cities in parks instead of parks in cities, and the greatest opportunity to achieve this is by growing plants within the fabric of our built environment.

EXPERIENCE: GREEN WALLS

Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority Cahill Expressway & Cumberland Street

The Rocks, in Sydney’s CBD, has long been a popular destination for tourists from around the world. Now, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority (SHFA) is working to enhance our city’s public spaces and make The Rocks an exciting and inviting destination for all people, not just those visiting our beautiful city. Junglefy are proud to have collaborated with SHFA on the design and installation of two luscious green walls on Cumberland Street and George Street (under the Cahill Expressway), which have contributed to bringing the beauty and benefits of nature back into our cities.

OUR ROLEJunglefy designed and installed a customized aluminium frame for the moderately curved Cumberland Street green wall ensuring penetrations into the host wall was minimised. It also required oversized holes to allow for the expansion and contraction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

For the George Street component of the project, Junglefy created a bespoke steel frame for the curved and slightly cambered Cahill Expressway pylon host wall. Additionally, we were responsible for the light study analysis on both walls, which incorporated LED technology to George Street. The planting design is unique to the lighting conditions but also accommodates shapes that are representative of Worker’s cottages seen along Cumberland Street a century ago.

Junglefy currently maintains both of these green walls which are thriving in their urban environment.

KEY INNOVATIONJunglefy installed a custom powder-coated, laser cut, curved drip tray to the George Street green wall, as well as custom irrigation set-up in a lockable cabinet and advanced dual purpose LED grow lights on a specified curved track to match the curve of the green wall.

EXPERIENCE: GREEN WALLS

Westfield Chatswood 2015

Scentre Group are currently undergoing a serious revamp of their Westfield shopping centres, with Westfield Chatswood, in Sydney’s Northern Suburbs, one of the latest to get a luxurious new facelift. Junglefy was responsible for the design, installation and ongoing maintenance of a creative new green wall, made with both real and artificial plants, which acts as a colourful feature wall leading into the newly opened Asian-inspired dining precinct.

OUR ROLEJunglefy modified the initial concept design brief provided by Scentre Group in order to develop a more suitable design for the specified location. Considering the unique location of the green wall, recessed into FC sheet paneling, a typical ladder frame was not appropriate, and as such we designed an aluminium frame with individual posts and rails as supports for the green wall modules. We were also responsible for developing a planting plan based on feedback from the Scentre Group design team to ensure the plants met the concept brief, as well as the functional properties of the green wall.

As it is a public retail space, Junglefy completes all maintenance prior to 9am.

KEY INNOVATIONDue to restrictions from the paneled façade, we created a unique drip tray, adding pond liner as an additional drip channel, leading from the modules to the conventional drip tray. We also cut the modules to size to fit comfortably behind the curved edges of the panels.

Ravenswood Girls School

Ravenswood Girls School was established in 1901 in Gordon, a suburb of Sydney. The school is still located on the original site, and has progressively expanded over the years. Opened in 2011, the Mabel Fidler Building is the hub of the school, meeting the diverse needs of the school community by providing spaces for formal and informal learning, staff and student lounges, a cafeteria, specialist performing arts spaces and school reception and administration. We created and maintain an external green wall for this central building.

OUR ROLEJunglefy provided technical design around the support frame, irrigation design and plant design. We then installed all elements of the green wall with modules grown off-site for six months prior to installation.

Junglefy currently maintain this green wall using elevated work platforms, ladders and mobile scaffolding.

Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre

Award-winning Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre (BLaKC) is a key urban redevelopment project in south-western Sydney. A creative adaptation of the former Bankstown Town Hall, it was conceived as a public space for the encouragement of intellectual, creative and social exchange.

OUR ROLEJunglefy collaborated with FJMT on the design of the 9.5m high green wall. The first of its kind in Australia, it uses natural convection to draw up through a plenum located behind the green wall. The air from the library is drawn in over the plants, which converts CO2 to O2 via a photosynthesis/microbe process. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are also removed by this process. Roof mounted solar panels supplement existing natural lighting.

Junglefy was responsible for the fully engineered design of the supporting structure for the green wall. The success of the biowall required a uniform flow of air past the plants and this needed to be incorporated into the modular green wall layout. Junglefy’s modular green wall system allowed this flexibility. The growing media used within the system had a relatively high level of coconut fibre (coir), which has fantastic properties that can support beneficial bacteria while at the same time being extremely stable.

Currently Junglefy carries out the maintenance on this living infrastructure project which is thriving in its indoor environment.

KEY INNOVATIONIntroducing the movement of air. This movement of air provides a higher rate of CO2 rich air, which the plants use. It also reduces the build-up of pests and diseases, especially molds and fungi.

ESQUE apartments

ESQUE consists of 29 luxury apartments and was completed by HELM in September 2013. All apartments were sold prior to ESQUE’s opening. This multi-storey residential building, with tight courtyard access, had challenging light conditions requiring careful plant selection for the four-storey high living green wall.

OUR ROLEJunglefy was responsible for the fully engineered support structure, planting design, irrigation design and access methodology. We installed vertical and horizontal steel battens to the wall, fixed the X-Frames to these and mounted the partly pre-grown modules to the wall.

Maintenance involves twin rope access by trained horticultural technicians as well as ladder access to lower levels.

UTS Building 10

Building 10 at the University of Technology (UTS) underwent significant renovations as part of the university’s buildings upgrade program. Junglefy’s green wall is located at the entrance to the breezeway between the newly built FEIT building and Building 10 and provides a beautiful outlook for what otherwise would have been an ugly standard wall.

OUR ROLEJunglefy worked with Architectus and TRACT in designing this green wall, specifically the planting choices, drainage and irrigation design. The steel supporting frame was installed by ISIS, onto which we installed our modular green wall system. A green roof completes the top of the green wall by giving the appearance of the plants wrapping over the top. Intermediary drainage trays were installed to capture water at regular intervals to reduce the risk of overwatering at the base of the wall.

Junglefy currently maintains this green wall, which is thriving in its urban environment.

KEY INNOVATIONIntermediary drainage catchment trays – installing the trays across the wall enabled a much more controlled and measured delivery of water to all sections of the wall. This meant that the bottom of the wall was not wetter than the top section and lead to an extremely water efficient system which uses less than 5L of water per m2 per week.

Adelaide City Council

Junglefy created a cascading living façade for the Adelaide City Council using a combination of green wall modules and planter boxes on the first floor balcony. This was the first time Junglefy’s Green Wall modules had been used on concrete columns requiring the construction of a bespoke sub-frame to ensure minimal penetrations.

The Adelaide City Council’s customer centre building is now a showcase of living infrastructure representing their commitment to creating a greener, more liveable city.

OUR ROLEJunglefy designed a customised steel structural support to work in with the cross-shaped concrete columns, which supported the 144 Junglefy Green Wall modules. EWP access was required to install the 6m tall green walls to each of the columns and the 12 GRC planters to the first floor balcony.

Junglefy maintains the six column green walls and the 12 GRC planter boxes on the first floor. Plants will be trained to meet the plants and green wall modules therefore connecting the green façade elements and creating a cascading living façade.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said: “The green wall was designed to showcase to developers and building owners how green infrastructure can be incorporated into building façades. City greening has the potential to extend beyond planting street trees, and living walls have countless benefits not just for buildings but the city as whole, helping to cool the environment, improve air quality and add vibrancy and interest to public spaces.”

LendLease Global Headquarters at Barangaroo

Junglefy provided the hero design element of the Lendlease global headquarters at Barangaroo South, a six-metre high Breathing Wall, creating a stunning entrance to the office as well as providing health and wellbeing benefits.

From the outset, this project was a collaborative effort with Lendlease including design, marketing, contract negotiations and even down to the planting of the modules. Lendlease held an internal competition in which eight of their team wrote in 25 words or less what their new workplace meant to them. The winning entries were granted a day off to come out to the Junglefy nursery to do a day of planting for their own project.

OUR ROLEJunglefy brought to this project, a comprehensive range of services. These included; a global first innovation, technical design, planting design and selection, installation of steel framework, fabrication and installation of plenums, installation of fans and irrigation, pre-growing of Breathing Wall and Green Wall modules at our nursery facility at Ingleside, commissioning of the project and a 3-year performance based maintenance contract.

The current maintenance program also includes monitoring by the research team from UTS Plants and Environmental Science and is part of our continuing research investment with UTS.

According to Cate Harris, Head of Lendlease Workplace Programs “we are proud to have partnered with Junglefy, one of Australia’s leading living infrastructure specialists to deliver Australia’s first breathing wall, to provide a safer, more comfortable and productive working environment.”

One Central Park

One Central Park is an architectural collaboration between Ateliers Jean Nouvel and PTW Architects located in Sydney’s Chippendale. This high profile project on the former Carlton United Brewery site, is the first stage of the Central Park development. In 2014, One Central Park was awarded the world’s best tall building by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

OUR ROLEJunglefy worked with French botanist Patrick Blanc to deliver the world’s tallest vertical garden at 130m high (over 1120 square metres). We were responsible for fabrication, assembly and installation of Blanc’s vertical garden, ensuring it met Australian building standards and was integrated into the 28-month building program, including the installation of the support brackets, frames, sheeting, irrigation, felt and plants.

Junglefy continues to be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and plant health of the entire site. This includes weekly visual inspections from the ground and monthly inspections via a swing stage. We check structure, plant health, treat against pests and diseases, prune and remove any rubbish.

KEY INNOVATIONJunglefy engineered the support brackets and aluminium frames and modularised the whole project. The installation methodology was the first of its kind anywhere in the world for this green wall system.

Advanx East

Advanx East is a large, high-rise residential development in Rushcutters Bay. The project brief arose from the geographical challenge of a high water table, which required the building’s car park to be built above ground. The façade greening is aimed at improving the overall amenity of the building, with the circular artwork Footprints, designed by artist Stefanie Flaubert, representing the memory of the original tracks through this natural landscape. This unique installation showcases a synthesis between the footprints of the traditional inhabitants along a path through the living foliage, providing new insights into the location’s past.

OUR ROLEJunglefy provided technical design support to FDC Construction, Place Design Group and Tensile around the support frame, irrigation design, planter box design and plant design. We were then responsible for installing all plant elements of the green façade including the design and manufacture of 180 bespoke planter boxes that were particularly suited to this green façade installation.

We provided maintenance for the first 12 months ensuring the leading shoots were trained onto the trellising wire. Due to its proximity to the main road, the maintenance of this façade has proved challenging. This was also due to the absence of a twin rope access static line, which was originally proposed but was removed due to budget constraints.

Anadara and Alexander Residences, Barangaroo South

Barangaroo is a landmark urban renewal project bordering on the world famous Sydney Harbour developed by construction giant Lendlease. Junglefy are involved in the Barangaroo South component of the project, specifically the Anadara and Alexander residences, which sold out in three-and-a-half hours after their August 2013 release. These highly coveted apartments were designed with their iconic Harbour setting in mind, incorporating natural colours, textures and shape to foster the residents’ connection with the environment throughout their living space. Junglefy has contributed to this, as well as the sustainability efforts of the development, through the planting of a green roof and assorted planter boxes on the Anadara and Alexander Apartment buildings, as well as green façades on both the eastern and western sides of the residences, designed to incorporate living plants into the built environment.

OUR ROLEAfter being engaged by Lendlease and provided with an initial design brief, Junglefy was responsible for further design modifications, as well as construction, especially in relation to planter boxes and irrigation supply to the green roof, green façades, turf and mass planting zones. Additionally, Lendlease provided specifications for us to use in our design and development of the semi-circular banquet seat on the Alexander apartments, comprising of a steel frame constructed with spotted gum timber cladding. For the green façades on the eastern side of the building, we were responsible for the design and engineering of the steel supports and associated irrigation to the planter boxes.

A tower crane and a 130 tonne mobile crane were used to move the majority of around 150 cubic-metre bulka bags of media onto the top levels for planting. When the crane was unavailable, Junglefy manually transported the media and planter boxes from the basement to the roof. The custom fibreglass planter boxes were fixed onto HDPE supports in the concrete slabs for extra stability. These were then planted with climbers and hooked onto pre-installed steel mesh. The combination of our proprietary planter boxes and specialized green roof mix produced exceptional growth, and led to an extremely satisfied client.

Junglefy currently maintains the living infrastructure for this project.

KEY INNOVATIONTotally concealing the irrigation system for the green façades in the steel frame and bespoke planter boxes.

Orange Regional Museum

The Orange Regional Museum is one of the most iconic buildings in Orange and perhaps the whole region. Instigated by the Orange City Council the building features a large sloping grass roof, creating additional green space that is open to the public and will be used for festivals, displaying sculptures, or movie nights.

OUR ROLEJunglefy were provided with an initial design concept, stating the desire for soil and turf on a sloping roof, which we then assessed and modified in order to develop the best possible outcome for the site. The landscape architect initially specified a certain green roof system, however after further consultation and analysis of the site, we found Geoweb to be a more appropriate customised solution for this roof. On the flat section of the roof, the Geoweb framework is approximately 80mm high, and gradually increases to 200mm high on the sloping section.

Junglefy was responsible for installing the Geoweb system and specially formulated media for the green roof, both of which will support the turf and mitigate the effects of media erosion. A crane was used to transport all materials to the roof, before being carefully installed by Junglefy. The media used on the roof was a new blowable turf underlay created by Ecoscapes specifically for this project.

Melbourne University – Burnley Campus

The Burnley Living Roofs at the University of Melbourne’s Burnley Campus is a world-class research and teaching facility – and the first of its kind in Australia. The University has established the facility to demonstrate to the wider community how green transformations can be achieved in our cities, aspiring to lead through example.

Three green roofs were installed. The first is a demonstration roof with structural elements and differing depths of media. One half is irrigated and the other is not. The second, is a trial area comprising four identical test beds and the third, is a natural roof with endemic plant species and a created wetland.

OUR ROLEJunglefy provided full technical design to realise Hassell’s (Landscape Architect) concept plans. All structural elements (decks, planters, steel grating and curved edging) were designed to be modular so that they could be built on the ground and then installed on the roof. The structural elements were fabricated in Sydney, transported to Melbourne, and then reassembled on site. This methodology was chosen to meet the noise limitations on site. The plants were installed by the University. The planter boxes required special attention to provide a seamless painted finish to a large surface area of sheet steel.

KEY INNOVATIONDue to restricted working hours, the hard elements (decking and garden beds) were pre-fabricated in Sydney and installed on site in modular format.

Bridgepoint

Positioned as Canberra’s most prestigious residential development, the Bridgepoint complex is located in Kingston Foreshore on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin. The development comprises of seven luxury lakeside residences, three whole-floor penthouses and 35 apartments. Junglefy designed and installed the extensive green roof over the lower level apartments so as to provide an improved outlook for the penthouses and other apartments that overlook the roof.

OUR ROLEJunglefy was provided with a conceptual design from Colin Stewart Architects and then undertook technical and plant design to realise the architects’ vision. Junglefy oversaw the installation of the waterproofing and the subsequent leak detection testing then installed the green roof drainage elements, growing media, plants and pebble ballast.

KEY INNOVATIONHigher density planting with mixed plant palette (including ground covers that act as mulch), no mulch.

The Steps at One Central Park

Student Accommodation is located within the One Central Park precinct in inner Sydney and has been designed and developed with the student residents in mind. It is a 14 storey, 826 bed student accommodation building that also features common areas and recreation and leisure facilities. Junglefy created a green roof for level 2 and two separate landscaped areas with planter boxes on levels 1 and 13 to grow herb and vegetable gardens for the students use, to encourage community gardening and “urban farming” in its most simple form. Another key feature of the project are the three custom designed steel planter boxes at the entry that support the large, 800ltr ornamental trees. These planters are the largest standalone planters on the entire Central Park Site and were one of the more challenging elements on the project.

OUR ROLEJunglefy was responsible for the plant selection and design for the majority of the planters, as well as the green roof on level 2. We designed, constructed and installed 3x12mm steel bench seat planters and landscaped the entire area on level 1 and introduced a combination of in-situ concrete planters and Quatro planters on both level 1 and level 13. We installed Modwood partition walls on level 1, Modwood clad hobs on level 13 and internal plants on level 1.

KEY INNOVATIONSelection of plant species that survive and flourish in low light areas (the level 2 green roof only receives around 1 hour of sunlight a day).

Key Facts Garden type: Extensive Green Roof, Quatro design planters, intensive in-situ concrete planters, 12mm steel planters

PRODUCTS & SERVICES

SUMMARY

We design, install and maintain living infrastructure systems including green walls, roofs, façades and podiums. At Junglefy we love to work creatively with our clients to “Junglefy Our Cities”, which means coming up with inventive ways to successfully integrate living infrastructure into harsh urban environments, inside and out.

We have also designed our own green wall system and in 2016 launched our award-winning Junglefy Breathing Wall, an active, modular green wall system, scientifically proven to accelerate the removal of air pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter. In addition, it cools the surrounding air temperature, resulting in energy efficiency and reduced air conditioning costs. Our green wall products have been designed using non-toxic, modular materials that is cost-effective to install, infinitely recyclable, scalable and easy to maintain.

We continually test living infrastructure systems together with plant types, media, irrigation and technology such as lighting. Our own research, combined with lessons learnt locally and globally, means we understand what works and what doesn’t. We believe this knowledge is of greatest value when working with our clients.

We understand that the most important thing about living infrastructure is that it grows and flourishes long-term.

Existing conventional building systems such as curtain walls and stud frame walls can be readily modified to accommodate Junglefy’s innovative Green Wall system.

The X-Frame will be fixed onto the composite panel of the curtain wall followed by an insulative panel and a back pan.

Each unitised curtain wall panel will have a drainage catchment tray and an irrigation feed point. These are important to ensure optimum water efficiency and tight control of drainage water in order to minimise the over watering of the lower section of the walls as the water moves downwards with gravity.

The award winning Junglefy Breathing Wall is a modular green wall system scientifically proven to accelerate the removal of harmful air pollutants, such as carbon dioxide, particulates and volatile organic compounds resulting in safer, more comfortable and productive working and living environments.

What sets it apart from both our existing green wall system (and others currently on the global market) is the introduction of active atmospheric filtering through mechanical ventilation to the plant walls. This combined with of our linear, low-density polyethylene modules and coconut fibre growing media is a clear departure from traditional green wall systems and indoor pot-plants.

The Breathing Wall is backed by published scientific research by The University of Technology Sydney Plants and Indoor Environmental Quality Research Group. More information including the full report on the research findings can be found here: http://junglefy.com.au/breathingwall/

SERVICES: TECHNICAL DESIGN

Good design is not just what looks good. It also needs to perform, amaze, and fulfil its promise. When it comes to living infrastructure, it needs to live and grow.

At Junglefy we believe that green roof and wall technology is a fundamental element of the emerging practice of living infrastructure. As living infrastructure specialists, we don’t treat green roofs and walls as just an architectural or ideological concept. They are living, breathing organisms that require careful planning, care and attention.

The most advanced living infrastructure also incorporates advanced monitoring and water management systems that prolong the life of the plants and ensures effective maintenance. It is the combination of these features, which ensures the green roof, wall, podium, façade or planter boxes are a sustainable building solution.

As every building is unique, at Junglefy we give careful consideration to both of these aspects to find the optimal balance for a particular design. We’ve learnt that adopting a one-size-fits-all approach can result in an under-engineered or overly complicated system that is ill-equipped for sustained plant growth and performance in the long term.

During the design phase, we prepare drawings and documents that address all issues involving plant and media selection, water

management (including water conservation), system weight loading and maintenance requirements in an effort to tailor the vegetated roof or wall to climactic and building constraints and our client’s needs.

LIVE & GROW

“As living infrastructure specialists, we don’t treat green roofs and walls as just an architectural or ideological concept. They are living, breathing organisms that require careful planning, care and attention.”

SERVICES: CONSTRUCTION

Once the design process has taken place, the key to successful and long term living infrastructure is its construction and installation.

The green roof and wall industry is an established market in Australia and commonly referred to as ‘living infrastructure’ or ‘green infrastructure’. With market growth and maturity comes recognition that successful delivery and maintenance of living infrastructure requires unique skills. It is therefore important to choose a team who not only understands plants, growing media and the best irrigation techniques, but also the long term impact living infrastructure can have on the building itself.

Our experienced and trained horticulturalists can provide feedback on architectural designs for living infrastructure, such as saturated weight, recommended plantings and the practical implementation of architectural designs, before construction commences.

Junglefy is an accredited green roof installer (Green Roofs Australia GR101 Green Roof Design and Installation) with proven experience and skills in irrigation, waterproofing and horticulture. Junglefy also has the appropriate in-house quality assurance systems, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, AS 4801 as well as professional indemnity and public liability insurances.

We don’t treat green roofs and walls as just an architectural or ideological concept. They are living, breathing organisms.

SERVICES: MAINTENANCE & REPAIR

As plants are living organisms they require ongoing care and maintenance. If living infrastructure is designed and constructed well in the first place, the ongoing maintenance and repair is a straightforward process.

All of Junglefy’s installations come with a minimum one-year establishment maintenance program. In many cases, our clients choose to extend this maintenance program for at least three years to ensure their green roof or wall investment flourishes.

We also offer maintenance and the complete repair and replanting of green roofs and walls that were not designed or installed by Junglefy.

Junglefy drafts a customised maintenance program for each roof and wall installation which is then carried out by our team of qualified horticulturalists.

The majority of our team are trained in the use of elevating work platforms (EWP’s) and we also have a team of ropes trained horticulturalists to access places not readily accessible to building maintenance units (BMU’s) or EWP’s.

ONGOING CARE

“Junglefy drafts a customised maintenance program for each roof and wall installation which is then carried out by our team of qualified horticulturalists.”

The result was the Junglefy Breathing Wall, the next generation modular and actively ventilated green wall system and the first of its kind in the world to be scientifically tested to validate its claims.

The key innovation is the addition of active air filtering through mechanical ventilation to the plant walls, is a major departure from pot plant arrangements and many other existing green wall systems currently used in our built environment.

Furthermore, the Junglefy Breathing Wall challenges the long held notion that buildings must be mechanically ventilated. Dr Fraser Torpy, the plant scientist who led the research project believes that plant based systems like the Junglefy Breathing Wall provide a more efficient, economical and healthier alternative compared to traditional HVAC systems and one day will completely replace these energy intensive techniques.

The application of this technology is vast. We believe it has its strongest application in cities suffering from dangerous air pollution

SCIENCE & INNOVATION

such as India and China. Our strategy, however, is to drive demand in our developed world (where we compete for the highest building standards and certifications like Green Star, LEED, BREEAM and Well) in order to bring the costs down for developing countries.

At Junglefy we recognise the importance of investing in research with our academic institutions. In 2014, with the assistance of a state and federal government grant we funded a research project with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Plants and Environmental Quality Research Group to put one of our more innovative ideas through advanced and rigorous scientific testing to ensure its safety, viability and efficiency.

“The Junglefy Breathing Wall, we believe, is the first modular, actively ventilated green wall system in the world to have all claims validated by published scientific research.”

Junglefy Capabilities Statement 2017 45

CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCTIONCarbon dioxide (CO2) is exhaled as the result of human respiration. High concentrations in our indoor environments can lead to headaches, lethargy and poor productivity. Plants reduce CO2 through photosynthesis, and create oxygen. The Junglefy Breathing Wall can remove 24.2 litres of CO2 per hour. This is the highest recorded CO2 removal rate recorded in scientific literature.

VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS REMOVALVolatile organic compounds (VOCs) are toxic gases released from printers, computers, deodorants, perfumes, plastics, carpets, furnishings, paints, and cleaning products. VOCs are captured in the growing medium of the Junglefy Breathing Wall, where they are broken down and absorbed by biological processes. The Junglefy Breathing Wall removes VOCs 1.5 times faster than equivalent volume of pot plants. This means that a 10m2 Junglefy Breathing Wall will remove VOCs at the same rate as 160 large pot plants.

PARTICULATE MATTER FILTRATIONParticulate matter (PM) includes emissions from

vehicle exhausts, and is one of the world’s most dangerous air pollutants. Particles smaller than 10 microns in diameter are so small that they can get into the lungs, potentially causing serious health problems. Ten microns is less than the width of a single human hair. The Junglefy Breathing Wall filters PM from the air, which would otherwise end up in our lungs. The Junglefy Breathing Wall removed 95% of all small particulates, from sealed chamber air, allowing the air to be returned to safe breathing levels within 12 minutes.

NOISE REDUCTIONDue to our love of open plan spaces, many indoor

environments can be very noisy, which can be highly distracting and lead to poor productivity. The Junglefy Breathing Wall reduces reflected noise by 41% compared to a conventional building wall.

BIOPHILIC RESPONSEIndoor plants are well known to reduce stress, sick leave and poor productivity. This effect is known as ‘biophilia’. Many sustainable building rating tools have recognised the value of biophilia, and have therefore included human access to nature within their recommendations. The Junglefy Breathing Wall is an effective space saving means of introducing nature into our internal built environments, creating healthier and happier building occupants.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND IMPACT ON HEATING VENTILATION AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are highly energy intensive. In fact, 48–56% of an average building’s energy consumption is attributed to a building’s air conditioning system. The Junglefy Breathing Wall reduces a building’s reliance on HVAC systems in three important ways. It actively reduces CO2 levels and filters out other pollutants, it cools ambient temperatures, and it humidifies the air. Simulation room trials demonstrated that a Junglefy Breathing Wall could reduce HVAC energy consumption by 33% for an average sized office, minimising a building’s carbon footprint and saving electricity costs.

* Estimates are based on a 10m2 Breathing Wall in a 100m2 office with 2.6m ceiling with 10 occupants with 1 fan under 100μE of light

This initial research project has provided us with greater scope for innovation and commercialisation of our products. We will continue our investment in scientific research including the following:

• Field trialing and monitoring in-situ applications of the Breathing Wall.

• Computational Flow Dynamic modeling of the air exchange rate capabilities of the system to permit predictions of the potential air quality improvements that can be achieved with in-situ installations.

• Testing the inclusion of innovative adjunct and alternative substrates in the system for their ability to enhance the particulate matter and VOC removal capacity of the system.

• Determining accurately, the comparison between both current and modified versions of the wall and commercial air purification devices.

• Testing the single pass efficiency of the Breathing Wall for other air pollutants of concern: NO x , SO x , CO. These will be the first tests of this type performed on a biofilter.

• Trialing the air cleaning capabilities of the system in highly polluted environments for a range of air pollutants, leading to a developed proof-of-concept model for use of the system in non-urban settings (industrial, commercial and transport-related situations).

• Testing the effects of a novel circadian rhythm lighting system on CO2 removal rates, and providing predictions on how the lighting system will affect long term air quality and plant health.

Research findings on the Junglefy Breathing Wall indicate the following key achievements:

Typically, we have roughly forty different plant species that are used in a variety of ways to supply our living infrastructure projects. These include seven species of fern, seven varieties of Philodendron, orchids, begonias, a couple of different types of fig and an expanding range of Australian native grasses, flowers and shrubs.

Growing and propagating our own plant stock allows us to offer clients higher quality and healthier plants, purpose grown for our living infrastructure systems, as well as faster delivery times and financial savings. It also means we can offer an enhanced maintenance program with the ability to swap over modules with healthy thriving plant stock straight from our nursery if required.

Our nursery also acts as a hub for research where we test new plant types for both our green wall and green roof systems. We prefer to use Australian native plants because they encourage local biodiversity and are often better suited to our harsh weather conditions and that means less intensive maintenance is required. We also test introduced species, which allow for greater plant variety but we don’t use these until we know they will be hardy and well-suited to Australian conditions. Both natives and introduced species have benefits and the goal of a living infrastructure project will determine what plants we would use.

From an environmental sustainability perspective, we have introduced a comprehensive pest management program at the nursery, favouring a clean site, composting and biocontrol

NURSERY

(where we use bugs to eat bugs) over the use of pesticides and harmful chemicals. We also use dam water for all of our watering at the nursery, and run all of our pumps off solar panel systems.

“Growing and propagating our own plant stock allows us to offer clients higher quality and healthier plants, purpose grown for our living infrastructure systems, as well as faster delivery times and financial savings. ”

Nestled in the hills of Ingleside on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the Junglefy nursery is where it all begins. Since its establishment in 2015, we’ve been growing all of our plants here; propagating them and growing them in pots until they’re mature enough to be planted into our green wall modules.
