Established in 1995, it provides consultancy and engineering design services in the field of Power and affiliated sectors. With a professional staff consisting about 500 engineers and designers, it has grown from strength to strength in gathering extensive experience in the power plant engineering and consulting assignments. L&T-S&L is connected to the parent company

International Private Leased Circuit (IPLC) to

facilitate concurrent engineering between the

two offices.

Concurrent Engineering is a novel concept wherein L&T-S&L design office can work

together in the same projects with Sargent & Lundy at the same time with the help of

distributed servers and replication. This helps project teams to overcome the

geographical barriers and difference in time zones, thereby enabling round-the-clock

engineering.

◼ Plant Design System (PLADES)

PLADES, developed by Sargent & LundyLLC, is an integrated project management,

engineering and design automation system for all aspects of power plant design,

analysis, optimization and 3D modeling. This system builds accuracy and

completeness of information into the engineering deliverables and generates reports

for project management, preliminary design, system engineering and physical design.

All project information is stored in a central database to be shared by projects teams.

The project database, coupled with graphic model, is also the foundation for

visualization and interference resolution, which greatly enables the physical design

activity.

◼ Intergraph PDS is a commercially available application suite equivalent to

PLADES. It is a comprehensive, intelligent computer aided design &

engineering (CAD/CAE) application for the process & power industries. It

consists of 2D & 3D modules that correspond to engineering tasks in the plant

design workflow

◼ GATECYCLE by GE performs detailed steady-state design and off-design

analysis of a wide variety of energy systems in one integrated package. The

software gives designers the power to model a plant's design-point operation

as well as understand and predict changes in a plant's performance with

changing loads, ambient conditions and equipment degradation for

combined-cycle, cogeneration, conventional coal and fluidized-bed power

plants. It includes complex equipment models to design and analyze more

advanced cycles, including major portions of IGCC plants, nuclear steam cycles

and advanced gas-turbine designs.

◼ CAESAR is a complete pipe stress analysis software program that allow quick

and accurate analysis of piping systems subjected to weight, pressure,

thermal, seismic and other static and dynamic loads. The software

incorporates a wide range of capabilities, from numerous piping codes, to

expansion joint, valve & flange and structural data bases, to structural and

buried pipe modeling, to equipment and vessel nozzle evaluation, to spectrum

and time history analysis. Besides the evaluation of a piping system’s response

to thermal, deadweight and pressure loads, CAESAR II analyzes the effects of

wind, support settlement, seismic loads and wave loads. Nonlinear effects

such as support lift off, gap closure and friction are also included. CAESAR II

also selects the proper springs for supporting systems with large vertical

deflections. Dynamic analysis capabilities include modal, harmonic, response

spectrum and time history analysis.

◼ ETAP or Electrical Transient Analyzer Program is a fully graphical electrical

transient analyzer program used for electrical power system modeling, design,

analysis, optimization, control and operation.

It is used for conducting following studies:

▪ Motor starting studies

▪ Transient stability studies

▪ Harmonic Analysis

◼ SAFE – Slab Analysis by Finite Element Method is a tool for designing

concrete floor and foundation systems. From framing layout all the way

through to detail drawing production, SAFE integrates every aspect of the

engineering design process. Slabs or foundations of any shape with edges

shaped with circular and spline curves can be modeled.

With SAFE, Post-tensioning may be included in both slabs and beams to

balance a percentage of the self-weight. Suspended slabs can include flat,

braces, walls, and ramps connected from the floors above and below. Walls

can be modeled as either straight or curved.

◼ STAAD – Structural Analysis and Design is comprehensive structural software

that addresses all aspects of structural engineering - model development,

analysis, design, verification and visualization. STAAD features state-of-the-art

user interface, visualisation tools, powerful analysis and design engines with

advanced finite element (FEM) and dynamic analysis capabilities.

◼ SAP – Structural Analysis Program is a general-purpose finite element

analysis program that can be used from a simple small 2D static frame analysis

to a large complex 3D nonlinear dynamic analysis. Complex Models can be

generated and meshed with powerful built in templates. Integrated design

code features can automatically generate wind, wave, bridge, and seismic

loads with comprehensive automatic steel and concrete design code checks

per US, Canadian and international design standards.

Advanced analytical techniques allow for step-by-step large deformation

analysis, Eigen and Ritz analyses based on stiffness of nonlinear cases,

catenary cable analysis, material nonlinear analysis with fiber hinges, multi-

layered nonlinear shell element, buckling analysis, progressive collapse

analysis, energy methods for drift control, velocity-dependent dampers, base

isolators, support plasticity and nonlinear segmental construction analysis.

Nonlinear analyses can be static and/or time history, with options for FNA

nonlinear time history dynamic analysis and direct integration.

◼ I-SKETCH is a pipe sketching application used for generating piping isometrics

Based on ISOGEN® technology, the key features are as below:

• Enables sketching of piping systems

• Includes templates for production of check, fabrication, and erection-

◼ AFT ARROW is a fluid dynamic simulation tool used to calculate pressure drop

and flow distribution in gas piping and ducting systems.

installations. It computes the resistance of any grounding system, earth

potentials anywhere inside or outside the installation and the ground

potential rise of the grid and of nearby buried metallic structures. It also

computes the expected touch and step voltages around the installations, and

indicate the regions where safe limits are exceeded. It accounts for complex

soil structures and for the presence of transmission or distribution lines or

cables connected to the grid.

◼ Primavera Primavera by Oracle is a well-accepted tool in the project Industry

capable of planning and managing projects of any size with varying levels of

complexity. Projects with thousands of activities can be planned and

monitored easily using this tool. It provides executives with a real-time view

of the project performance and equips project participants the power and

flexibility to effectively execute projects. With such kind of data management,

real-time analysis and reporting becomes easier for the workforce enabling

faster decision making.

A very comprehensive project management toolset for the effective

management of projects, it provides the ability to plan and resource multi-

level projects using an enterprise project structure. The tools integrated

within the package make it easier to handle and track large projects.
