CHAPTER 3. SOFTWARES AND TEAM AVAILABLE WITH V
R TECHNICHE
3.1 General
This Chapter presents various software programmes available with V R TECHNCIE for travel
demand estimation and pavement design. These are presented in the following section.
3.2 Software Available with V R TECHNICHE
V R TECHNICHE has developed and validated the following software for travel demand
estimation and transport planning.
DIAL’s STOCH for multinomial logit model based multi-path traffic assignment – has
been used successfully for a large number of road projects
Logit and Dogit model based mode choice models
Genetic Algorithm based network planning software
O-D analysis software (Excel based)
IVF models for O-D matrix estimation from link volume counts
V R TECHNICHE has also developed and validated the following software for pavement
investigations and design.
Templates for analysis of pavement roughness and Benkelman Beam Deflection data
Pavement design software using IRC and AASTHO methods – for normal and PMB
materials
Pavement Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) software
In addition to the above, V R TECHNICHE is in the process of developing a vehicle detection
software from analysis of video data. This software, when developed and validated, will
circumvent all the uncertainties associated with the manual counting of traffic.

K. Harikishan Reddy and Partha Chakroborty, (1999) Procedure to Estimate the Origin-Destination Matrix from Marginal Trip Totals and Ordinal Information of Matrix Elements, Transportation Planning and Technology, Vol. 22, pp247-270.
The difficulty of obtaining the Origin-Destination trip demand (O-D) matrix from population survey data motivated researchers to estimate the O-D matrix from a variety of data sources, among which O-D matrix estimation from marginal trip totals and traffic volume counts on the links received lot of attention. One of the key issues in the O-D estimation methods, based on these two data sources, is the specification of trip dispersion. So far, primarily, information on past O-D matrices, trip length frequencies, and approximate idea of the value of O-D elements have been used to specify trip dispersion. In this paper, a methodology is proposed which utilises ordinal information, like, the number of trips between a pair of zones is more than the number of trips between another pair of zones, amongst some of the O-D elements to specify trip dispersion. In addition to this the method utilizes only marginal trip totals to determine estimates of O-D matrix elements. The method can also incorporate cardinal information on O-D matrix elements. The results show that the proposed methodology works very well and with little computation effort.
K. Harikishan Reddy and Partha Chakroborty, (1998) A Fuzzy Inference Based Assignment
Algorithm to Estimate O-D Matrix from Link Volume Counts, Computers, Environment, and
Urban Systems, Vol. 22, No. 5, pp409-422.
Origin Destination Trip Demand Matrix (O-D) is an essential ingredient in a wide variety of travel analysis
and planning studies. The traditional way of obtaining O-D from home-interview survey data is expensive
in terms of time and money. O-D estimation from link counts on the other hand is more appealing as the
required data collection is simple and routine. Some of the O-D estimation methods from link volume
counts required the relative contributions of the O-D elements towards the link volumes. In the literature
these proportions are assumed to be exogenous and are usually obtained from proportional traffic
assignment models. In the study, a flow dependent fuzzy inference based assignment algorithm is proposed
for generating the required proportions and a recursive methodology is adopted for the O-D estimation.
The methodology is applied to three test networks and the results are found to be satisfactory.
