Amy Bourne and Jesse Peck met online. Things seemed to go well as they got to know each other via email, but there was one lingering doubt that kept Amy from agreeing to a real date. “I didn’t believe one of Jesse’s profile pictures — of him in midair, coasting off a ski-race jump — was real,” says Amy. It wasn’t until Jesse provided her with the Boston Globe article in which the photo had appeared that the two finally met in person.

Initially, they took it slow. Amy was happy living in Manhattan, as was Jesse in Brooklyn, and both enjoyed getting to know each other’s homes. One day, Amy mentioned that she would love to bicycle through Brooklyn, and Jesse surprised her with a vintage Schwinn, complete with a basket and bell. “We rode around Prospect Park, to Coney Island, Red Hook, and Ocean Parkway,” says Amy. As they got to know the city — and each other — better, they found themselves in love. But it was on a trip to Canada to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Quebec City’s Winter Carnival that Jesse finally realized he had found The One. “Six months of dating, 10 hours driving each way, a day of skiing at Mont Saint Anne, trekking through mountains of snow for cassoulet and Bordeaux, and finally, Jesse was ready to go steady,” says Amy.

During the summer of the following year, Amy and Jesse visited the Hamptons and decided to bike up Montauk’s rolling hills to the town’s historic lighthouse. As they recovered on the rocks, Jesse took a ring out of his pocket. “Delirious from the heat, we joke that neither of us remembers exactly what happened,” says Amy. When she accepted, the couple celebrated with a refreshing dip in the chilly Atlantic waves before hopping back on their bikes to continue the day’s fun.

As they began planning the wedding, many wonderful, serendipitous events convinced them that fate was on their side. First, it turned out that their floral designer had grown up summering in the same town in Maine where Jesse had spent his childhood, and had already constructed a huppa from Maine-grown trees that the couple felt was the perfect structure for them to be married under. “As Jesse is an architect, the home that the huppa from Maine represented felt connected and symbolic,” says Amy.

The next charmed occurrence came when they visited Amy’s mother in Cape Cod shortly after becoming engaged. Out of curiosity, Amy asked her if she still happened to have her own wedding gown.

She did — and when Amy tried it on, she found it to be a perfect fit. At first, she didn’t plan to wear it, but after trying on various gowns in New York, she realized her mom’s dress felt the most comfortable. Later, at the reception, she strung up old family photos and was delighted at her guests’ reactions: “I loved watching people discover the one of my mom, who I look so much like, at her own 1972 wedding and making the connection.”

Amy and Jesse’s wedding day was a lot like their relationship — unhurried, relaxed, and sweet. Guests played catch with old baseball gloves as the sun set after cocktail hour, and the bride and groom impressed everyone by kicking off the reception with a nontraditional first dance to the Ting Ting’s “That’s Not My Name.” “It definitely set the tone for the rest of the evening and was worth the hours of dance lessons in our tiny living room in the city,” says Amy. After a perfect evening and a few surprises — Amy’s 89-year-old grandfather boogied to Bon Jovi’s “Living on a Prayer” as guests circled around him, cheering — the bride and groom left the celebration, knowing they were one step further along in their journey together, thanks in part to one vintage Schwinn bicycle.
