Cape Town is the quintessential melting pot: it is a city alive with creativity, colour, sounds and tastes.

While walking through the city’s streets and meeting its people, you will fall in love with its natural beauty, creative freedom and incred-ible spirit.

Cape Town is a city where the unexpected is always just around the corner and the beauti-ful province of the Western Cape lies ready to be explored across the city border.Cape Town is not only the most popular inter-national tourist destination in South Africa, but Africa as a whole. This is due to its good climate, natural setting, and well-developed infrastructure.

Cape Town is the second-most populated city in South Africa after Johannesburg, and the provincial capital and primate city of the Western Cape. As the seat of the National Par-liament, it is also the legislative capital of the country.

The city is famous for its harbour, its natu-ral setting in the Cape floral kingdom, world famous winelands as well as for such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point.

KEY ATTRACTIONS

Cape Town has so much to offer as a tourist destination. It is blessed to have South Africa’s top six tourist attractions within one hour’s drive from the city centre, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Table Mountain, Cape Point, the Cape Winelands, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Robben Island, a short boat trip away.

TABLE MOUNTAINSouth Africa’s world-renowned icon, Table Mountain, was afforded National Park status in May 1998. Table Mountain offers something for everyone – magnificent views, cable car rides, mountain-biking, hiking, serious rock climbing, cross country running, fascinating botany, birding and for the more adventurous, abseiling and paragliding. Visitors are treated to a spectacular view during the ride to the top of Table Mountain aboard a modern cable car with a revolving floor.

VICTORIA & ALFRED WATERFRONTCape Town’s Victoria and Alfred Waterfront has established itself as a leading world-class waterfront. The unique working harbour with scenic views of Table Mountain combined with entertainment options like shopping, street musicians, museums, an aquarium, boat trips and cinemas promise to make any visit an unforgettable experience.

ROBBEN ISLANDRobben Island is one of South Africa’s four World Heritage sites. This barren windswept island was the prison home of former President Nelson Mandela for 18 years. Here you can experience the view that kept Nelson Mandela’s dream of freedom for his country alive.

CAPE POINTThe Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point form part of the Cape Peninsula National Park and are managed by South African National Parks. Visitors can enjoy the 7 750 hectares reserve of indigenous flora and fauna and over 150 bird species and can also travel with the only funicular in Africa to the viewing platform 678 metres above the sea.

KIRSTENBOSCH BOTANICAL GARDENSKirstenbosch is internationally acclaimed as

one of the great botanical gardens of the world. Situated on the south eastern slopes of Cape Town’s magnificent Table Mountain, the estate covers 528 hectares and includes a cultivated garden and a nature reserve. Indeed the tiny Cape Peninsula has more floral diversity than the whole of Europe combined.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Despite perceptions to the contrary, Cape Town is as safe as most international cities, and this is in no small measure due to the efforts of the Central City Improvement District (CCID). One of the main drivers behind the establishment of the CCID in 2000 was to make Cape Town’s Central City the safest in the country. The vision was to set up effective preventive and reactive security measures through highly visible police officers, mobile vehicles and a bicycle squad twenty four hours a day.

Altogether, 200 security officers keep the streets of the CBD safe, day and night, for all those who work in, live in or visit the city. The dedicated team of security managers and foot officers, who are highly visible, patrol the streets on a 24-hour basis.Multi-lingual officers with all officers fluent in English.

A CCTV surveillance network, paid for by the City of Cape Town, assists in keeping crime at bay. In addition, Cape Town now also boasts a municipal police force. Three hundred and fifty officers have already been trained, 35 of whom are allocated to the central city specifically.

CCID security officers work in a close partnership with the private sector and all law enforcement agencies by communicating on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. This unique partnership has seen a consistent decrease in the crime rate.

GLOBAL REPORTING INITIATIVE (GRI)The GRI is a global network-based organisation that produces a comprehensive international sustainability reporting framework for leading organisations.

The CTICC was the first convention centre in the world to align its reporting practices to the GRI framework and submit its report for an application-level check, achieving a Level B status. In addition to its GRI reporting, the CTICC is also one of the few international convention centre’s to belong to the United Nations Global Compact and the Green Meetings Industry.

SUSTAINABILITYAt the CTICC, we have long recognised that sustainable business success requires that organisations make sound environmental practices a strategic imperative. As such, the centre has a dedicated environmental task team that advises management on trends and issues in environmental management. This ‘green’ commitment is nothing new to the CTICC.

From the first day of construction, the centre has worked hard to minimise its environmental impact and the proposed expansion of the CTICC will build further on the centre’s reputation as a truly ‘green’ event destination.

AMENITIESStart your day with a fresh brew at Coffee on the Square, situated in the main foyer of the CTICC. If you feel more indulgent, the privately owned a-la-carte Marimba Restaurant offers a delectable fusion of South African and cosmopolitan cuisine, as well as top-notch entertainment.

Internationally renowned, ER 24 is the centre’s onsite medical service provider. Guests and clients to the centre have the convenience of an array of essential medical services at their disposal.

For all personal foreign exchange transactions, Imali Express offers a hassle-free service to all delegates and visitors to the CTICC

wishing to purchase or sell foreign currency, with competitive rates and friendly, helpful consultants.

Whatever your day-to-day needs whilst running or attending a conference, the CTICC has them covered thanks to a variety of handy on-site facilities.

CAPE WINELANDSTo many, this region is the most classically beautiful part of South Africa. Craggy mountains, valleys, streams … with centuries old Cape Dutch architecture in between, and all those vineyards together with picturesque historic towns and villages all within an hour or two’s drive from Cape Town. Choose from some 600 wine estates for a fabulous wine tasting experience and perhaps a bite to eat at one of the fine country restaurants situated on many of the wine estates. Naturally, it’s the wine most visitors come for. With most cellars easily accessible from Cape Town, surrounding small, long established and stylish towns like Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are a highly convenient outing for local and foreign visitors alike, that can last from a couple of hours to an entire day or longer. With first-rate meeting and conferencing facilities, the Cape Winelands is perfect as a day conference teambuilding or incentive destination. Longer duration events make even more sense, the variety of accommodation options throughout the region making it an ideal business tourism location. From the luxury of upmarket hotels to warm welcomes at

historic farm houses and guest houses, the Cape Winelands has ample quality accommodation. Think of it; leave London on the Friday night flight, arrive in time for the start of a Saturday morning conference, and be back at the desk early in the week (if you really need to rush).

CAPE GARDEN ROUTE & KLEIN KAROOThe stretch of scenically splendid country straddling the southern coast of South Africa’s Western Cape province, the Cape Garden Route, has long been one of South Africa’s premier tourism attractions. Sandwiched between the Outeniqua mountain range and the Indian Ocean, and incorporating the few hundred kilometres from Mossel Bay to the wonders of the forests at Tstitsikamma National Park and taking in George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in between, this is an area of significant natural beauty. The area is perhaps best characterised by four creatures – the dolphins and whales and from the forest, the splendidly colourful Knysna Turaco and the secretive forest elephant.

The Klein Karoo, on the other hand, a far drier region to the north of the Outeniqua mountain range, is a more recent tourist discovery. Well known for being home to the largest section

of Route 62 – which has rapidly become South Africa’s most famous and scenic road-trip, the Klein or Little Karoo is best recognised for the ostrich farms outside its principle town, Oudtshoorn, and the massive limestone formations of the nearby Cango Caves. The many well-maintained and loved Victorian-era homes in the town were once home to the feather barons, today reminders of an age when the feathers of the ostrich were worth almost as much as gold. The larger region is the setting for quaint, period towns and villages such as Barrydale, Ladismith, De Rust, Uniondale and South Africa’s port wine capital, Calitzdorp, dwarfed by rugged mountain peaks to the north and south. The Western Cape’s biggest private game reserve, Sanbona, is found in this big-sky part of the Klein Karoo.

While the Klein Karoo is normally a quiet place, for three weeks in summer it comes alive with the sights and sounds of the annual Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, where people from all over the world gather under the warm Karoo skies to appreciate the art and culture of South Africa and simply celebrate life.

( 25 )

CAPE KAROOIt’s little wonder that this part of the Western Cape is one of BBCTelevision’s favoured locations for its natural history programmes on palaeontology. Climatic conditions in the Cape Karoo have made it possible for more than 300-million years of the earth’s history to be recorded in stone.

Here, pre-historic men and beasts for millennia shared what was then a very different landscape. Today, in this vast and arid silence, the stories of the San people are recorded on the rock faces of this dramatic landscape. Rock-art sites take one back in time with recollections of more than 30 000 years of history of the San and Khoi Khoi people who once called this region home. Likewise, within the rocks is recorded another tale – that of the age of dinosaurs. The Cape Karoo has some of the best preserved dinosaur fossils yet found, with doubtless thousands more yet to be uncovered.

Despite the summer heat and arid conditions, the Cape Karoo is inhabited by one of South Africa’s premier tourist offerings – wildlife. And the treasure of these creatures is that most of them aren’t found in other reserves as they have specially adapted to survival in this harsh environment. rhinoceros and the riverine rabbit, both among the rarest animals on earth.

A region of extremes that inspires thought and creativity without distraction, it is fitting that it is a place of pioneers.

CAPE OVERBERGIt is difficult to reign in the superlatives when referring to most parts of the Western Cape, but when contemplating the Cape Overberg it is surprisingly easy to let words run wild. Its coastlines are spectacular, the back -roads wind across the countryside as they do in a country song, and whale watching is as good as it gets. On the southernmost tip of the African continent, the Cape Overberg is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of Southern Africa. The Cape Overberg is a short one-hour drive from Cape Town over the spectacular Sir Lowry’s Pass or along the scenic coastal route, Clarence Drive, carved from the mountainside and hugging the cliffs from Gordon’s Bay to Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond and beyond. The sheer magnificence of peaks dropping straight into the ocean on the one side, and the rolling patchwork quilt of cultivated hills framed by yet more mountain ranges beyond – is difficult to ignore, and for the first-timer armed with a camera the journey may take a while.

The adventurous get their kicks in a variety of activities, shark-cage diving in Gansbaai, deep-sea fishing, abseiling, quad-biking and game viewing. Between June and December the

coast plays home to vast numbers of Southern Right whales that come to the protected bays to calve from the frigid Southern Ocean. During this time, Hermanus, the whale capital of South Africa, is packed with visitors from all over the world who come to experience the thrill of watching these majestic creatures at one of the world’s best land-based whale watching venues. The region is also home to large numbers of South Africa’s national bird, the graceful blue crane, which flock to the farmlands in this area. But the Cape Overberg offers more than adventure, ticking off that bird list, photographic opportunities and watching whales. Getting down to business, many of the towns offer top-class meeting and conferencing facilities, and delegates can follow up their business in a variety of fashions; flirting with lady luck at a casino is one option, unwinding in iron-rich natural hot springs another.

CAPE WEST COASTThose with a bit of the frustrated poet lurking within, inspired by haunting and weathered landscapes, will find this region utterly seductive. While the Cape West Coast is known for rich agricultural lands, the wilderness of the Cederberg and a rich marine environment – its greatest assets, are kept tucked away for the tourist to discover. With lagoons, pristine beaches and wetlands, rugged and majestic mountain ranges and the arid beauty of Namaqualand in the north, this region is an ecotourism wonderland. When the spring rains fall between July and September, millions of

Western Cape Regions

Page 27: Cape Town & Western Cape Destination Guide

indigenous and endemic flowers and bulbs carpet the landscape in bright colours. Local botanists will tell you that in this region exists the greatest diversity of bulbs on earth and many species that grow nowhere else on earth.

This coast is home to whales and dolphins throughout the year. It is also a bird-watcher’s paradise (a favoured feeding ground for migrant waders from Siberia), and fine hiking territory, with trails winding through the startling and distinctive rock formations of the Cederberg mountain range. Rock paintings created by the ancient Khoisan in celebration of their life and religious beliefs, together with quiet roads winding through spectacular landscapes add to the unique attractions of this region. Those interested in the area’s heritage can also follow the early footsteps of man in Langebaan on the coast (70 minutes from Cape Town), where there are fossils dating back more than 10-million years.

For the adventure-seeker, the outdoor activities are substantial, inevitably lending themselves to the production of adrenalin. Sky-diving, hang-gliding and paragliding, hiking and 4x4 trails in the mountains and kayaking, sailing or fishing along the coast; the Cape West Coast is serious adventuretourism territory.

CAPE TOWN – SURROUNDING AREASEast of Cape Town’s city centre and the Cape Town International Airport, visitors can enjoy scenic coastlines, picturesque vineyards and rural getaways – welcome to Cape Town’s most

beautiful gem, Cape Town East. The Hottentots Holland Mountain range dominates the area known as the Helderberg and some novel attractions and activities are on offer. The region includes Khayelitsha, the coastal suburbs of Strand and Gordon’s Bay, with its long white stretches of beach and the adjacent suburbs of Macassar, Somerset West, Lwandle and Sir Lowry’s Pass. Closer to Cape Town Central is the area known as the Oostenberg which includes the suburbs of Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Kuils River. This is where Cape Town’s urban areas meet the rural gateway to the Cape Winelands. The east metropole region also boasts one of the richest eco-nature offerings with the Helderberg Nature Reserve and the Kogelberg Biosphere. Drive along Clarence Drive to experience what was referred to by Reader’s Digest as one of the world’s 10 most scenic drives.

Cape Town North is the area north and north-east of Cape Town Central. It includes the beachside suburbs of Milnerton, Sunset Beach, Bloubergstrand, Table View, Atlantis and Melkbosstrand as well as the residential and wine growing areas of Durbanville, Century City, Pinelands, Goodwood, Parow, Bellville and Langa. The district benefits from its close proximity to Cape Town International Airport and offers a range of accommodation options. Hotels, guest houses, self-catering units, lodges and bed and breakfast establishments are all on offer. The area has a number of attractions including shopping malls such as Canal Walk, Willowbridge Lifestyle Centre and Tygervalley Centre. There are also a fantastic collection of

wine estates that are well signposted along the Durbanville Wine Route. The area boasts a casino called Grand West Casino with its own range of bars and restaurants. There are numerous excellent local restaurants, bars, clubs, theatres and entertainment venues.

Cape Town South is home to some of Cape Town’s best attractions, beaches, restaurants and places to stay. Some of the favourite attractions include Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, Table Mountain National Park, Cape Point, Boulders Beach penguins, whales from July to November and fantastic beaches and water sports. Shopping enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice. There are numerous shopping centres, including the fashionable Cavendish Square, as well as a great selection of trendy and creative art and craft shops especially in the coastal villages including Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Kommetjie. The Constantia Wine Route boasts the oldest wine estate in South Africa, Groot Constantia, and some of the most incredible wines in the country. All wine estates are open to visitors for tastings. Cape Town South is home to two famous sport stadiums, the Newlands Rugby Stadium and the Newlands Cricket Grounds. There are also a host of excellent golf courses.

WEST COASTSouth Africa’s West Coast region offers intrigue and immense value and interest to anyone touring the area. For many the West Coast is an acquired taste--kilometers of empty, often windswept beaches and hardy coastal scrub, low horizons and big skies, lonely tree-lined dirt roads, and distant mountains behind which lie lush pockets carpeted in vineyards. The main reason most visitors venture up here is to catch the spring flower displays that occur in the West Coast National Park anytime from the end of July to early September; but this aside, there are a few more gems to uncover -- wonderful available water sports including angling, diving, surfing, sailing, kite-boarding, windsurfing and swimming, as well as hiking, horse-riding not to mention the exceptional and bountiful seafood and distinctive wines and fruits. The West Coast folk are renowned for their hospitality and welcome one into their lives with warmth, hospitality, congeniality, great food and the endless stories they are renowned for!

NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES:

VICTORIA FALLS (ZAMBIA / ZIMBABWE)The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Mist that Thunders) is a waterfall located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The falls are some of the largest in the world. The Victoria Falls are considered by some to be among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, is believed to have been the first European recorded to view the Victoria Falls. For a considerable distance above the falls, the Zambezi flows over a level sheet of basalt, in a shallow valley bounded by low and distant sandstone hills. The river’s course is dotted with numerous tree-covered islands, which increase in number as the river approaches the falls. There are no mountains, escarpments, or deep valleys which might be expected to create a waterfall, only flat plateau extending hundreds of kilometres in all directions. The falls are formed as the full width of the river plummets

in a single vertical drop into a transverse chasm 1708 meters (5604 ft) wide, carved by its waters along a fracture zone in the basalt plateau. Victoria Falls is roughly thrice the height of North America’s Niagara Falls and well over twice the width of its Horseshoe Falls. In height and width Victoria Falls is rivalled only by South America’s Iguazu Falls.

OKAVANGO DELTA (BOTSWANA) Possibly the finest scenery for wildlife in Africa. Pristine and primeval Africa is offset by superb private lodges where you can experience the best of the African wilderness. Any trip to the Okavango is unforgettable and life-changing. Packages depart Johannesburg and Cape Town and normally are a minimum of three days, although travellers can extend to spend time at a number of distinctly different lodges. The Okavango is a vast wetland in the Kalahari Desert where the desert is transformed into a wildlife paradise, and as such water-based and land packages make for a unique blend of experiences.

NAMIBIAN SPECTACULARNamibia is a country of superlatives, from the mighty Fish River canyon to the highest dunes in the world near Sossusvlei, from cosmopolitan cities like Swakopmund and Windhoek to

extraordinary national parks like Etosha. This is a land of splendid contrasts, where the overall impression is of vast open spaces and an endless African sky.

MOZAMBIQUAN ISLANDSSouth Africans have known for many years of the most wonderful tropical island destinations on their doorstep, enough to make the Caribbean or Pacific quite ordinary. These special island destinations are just a flight away from South Africa. Whether it’s the stunning Seychelles with its wonderful beaches or magical Mauritius with its pampered five star luxury or the outdoor adventure and French-cuisine of Reunion with its active volcano, to the underwater coral reefs of the Bazaruto archipelago in Mozambique, all are easily in reach of South Africa as affordable and extraordinary tropical getaways.
