This trendy city cat will show you the latest and greatest establishment before it even knows it’s the latest and greatest establishment. Fasten your top buttons, it’s gonna get lyrical.
If you’re a holiday shopaholic aiming to scale the dizzying heights of local fashion, then let this social tastemaker be your trusty shopping sherpa.
Cape Town has an abundance of outdoor activities just waiting to pimp your instagram feed to the max. Let’s get physical.
Whether you’re into fish n’ chips or a beef bourguignon, Cape Town will satisfy even the fussiest of tastebuds until they’re fat and happy.
Living la vida local
CAPE TOWN’S INSIDERS GUIDE
A holiday is anything but a holiday. First of all, there’s the getting there part; flights, hotels, trains, taxis and the lost baggage concern. Then there’s the immediate sense of expectation to explore every corner of your new urban playground; to understand its people, embrace its culture, taste its finest foods, sample its crafty beers and return home to your envious friends a wiser, more interesting human. This is usually not the case as stress takes its toll and before you know it you’re just another passenger on the overloaded tour bus of mediocrity.
Don’t panic. We’ve done the work for you. Localised is a guide of Cape Town by Cape Town. Choose from four unique individuals and experience the Mother City through the eyes of a local. Don’t forget to share your insiders journey through Cape Town using #localised.
Lekker!

This place is my spirit animal. Beer, bikes and bands. I spend most of my days in the confines of this sacred place. Tip: Order an Old Fashioned cocktail. It’s the best in the city.
Dim lighting, whiskey and a decent playlist (I won’t say great playlist because that would be un-hipster of me). Tip: Try and time an evening when the owner himself Mr Paps is DJ’ing.
If you didn’t know it was there you would walk right past Outrage of Modesty. This bar makes cocktails that look and taste like they are from the year 2237. Tip: Go and check out the bathroom. Its an experience in itself.
No secret here. Serves quarts and I’m a big fan of the mac and cheese as well as their burgers. Tip: Zamalek is the local term for one of SA’s most popular beers, Black Label. Say it after me, “Please can I have one Zamalek quart.”
Who doesn’t love a good beer hall with equally great food? There are a few out there but this place is the best of the wurst (see what I did there?) Tip: Ask about their special of the week. Always amazing, and super decently priced.
I personally enjoy the Kloof Street shop the most out of their 3. They also make a pretty decent pizza. A place I always leave drunk and emotional. Tip: Great selection of live music on Sunday afternoon.

The perfect place to pick up a little something special to remind you of your trip. Beautiful dresses, colourful blouses, leather sandals, all locally made. Tip: Especially good for something like a low-key cocktail dress for NYE.
All that glitters. Handbags, jewels and clothing made by local artisans. The store is a showpiece for their incredible talents, stocking some of the city’s biggest names. Expect not to leave without swiping your credit card.
This beautiful space sells locally made homeware and skincare. Tip: This is where you’ll find organic skincare range Skoon, which is 100% all-natural, packaged absolutely beautifully and just smells amazing.
The ubiquitous Spanish shoe is now made in Cape Town at the Bree Street store. Tip: Ask to fully customise every detail of your new favourite pair of shoes.
Handmade leather goods produced in Woodstock. Their soft leather bags come in a couple of different shapes and sizes. Tip: Great backpacks, tote bags and duffel bags for travelling and transporting your new summer wardrobe back home.
Designer Kat Pichulik’s bold, colourful pieces became immediately iconic. Inspired by powerful women in many cultures, her pieces are loud and eye-catching. You won’t be able to wear your new jewels without someone asking you about them.

Located on the top of Table Mountain, far enough away from the tourist hub to ensure solitude, this is a quiet place to experience how the mountain must have been like centuries ago. Tip: Stand still in the valley, and feel for yourself why Capetonians say the mountain is full of energy.
If you want to view Cape Town from every imaginable angle, hop on your mountain bike. Accessed via Tokai Forest, the route corkscrews its way to a cell network mast – offering views of the entire Cape Peninsula as you journey up. Tip: If you enjoy a challenge, run it first, followed by a ride. The time comparison is interesting.
A workout. A stroll. Locals. Tourists. Couples. Singles. Selfies. Panoramic views. The Twelve Apostles. Full moon hikes. The Lion ticks all the boxes. My favourite Cape Town landmark. Tip: When it’s busy, take the longer route around the chains. It’s quicker. Or get their early.
I still have to pinch myself every time I take this road. Is this seriously what’s on my doorstep? Home to the world’s most beautiful ultra-marathon, and largest participant cycle race. Tip: Meet outside La Perla, Sea Point (Tue & Thur 5:45am) and join the world’s most competitive cycle training.
Just before Simon’s Town (via Fish Hoek), take a sharp right onto a decrepit, single lane, concrete, switchback road. Pedal all the way to the naval base, and you’ll understand how the gradient gave this road its name.Tip: Respect this climb. Go hard too early, and you’ll wish the canons at the summit could end your misery.
Home to Cape Town’s best graffiti work. Walk the hood – adventure lurks around each corner. Along with a few friendly, shady characters. Tip: A hotbed of creative talent, food, and coffee. Buy property now, everyone will want to live here in 5 years’ time.

Home for me each evening, Publik is a wine bar all about sharing unique and unusual wines in an unpretentious way. A place strangers become friends around a good glass (or three) of wine. Tip: Get a tasting flight: 5 wines chosen by the bar that will truly open your mind to Cape Town’s amazing wine culture.
Patrons line up before opening to get into this no-reservations culinary gem. Why? They serve as fine a quality of food as you’ll find in the city, translated into tapas boards filled with small plates for sharing. Tip: Don’t even try go at a ‘normal’ time. Get there very early for lunch or dinner to nab a table.
They make other food but it’s the pastries that sets the place apart from the many other breakfast or lunch options in town. Pasteis de nata, pain au chocolate, bacon croissants ... it’s dangerous for your waistline but hey, you’re on holiday, live a little. Tip: Start the day here - the coffee is strong and you can stroll to a number of other spots down Bree Street.
Paired down, yet serious food that’s focused around quality of seasonal produce and ethical meats cooked on an open-flame charcoal grill. A great eating experience run by chef Ash Heeger, one of Cape Town’s true talents. Tip: Praised for meat, but they also make the best mussels in town.
A tiny spot with a big heart, this Asian-inspired eatery knocks out small plates of goodness that defy the size of the kitchen. It will have you back weekly - if you can get a seat. Tip: Drink bubbles - they’ve got a great list of local sparkling wines.
As unfancy as it gets. Beautifully tacky furnishings, pints of beer, plates of deep-fried squid tentacles and the best chili sauce this side of the other place with great chili sauce.Tip: You can sit outside but go for lunch and sit at the bar to get the real deal.
