Dear Parents / Guardians

As we finally say goodbye to our Bahraini winter, rain and all, we

look forward to the best time of the year both weather wise and academically. The middle term is always seen as one which demonstrates the most pro-gress as the children really consolidate their early learning and display great crea-tivity in all subject particularly in English, Art, P.E., Music. I sin-cerely hope that the teacher plans and topic plans posted on class websites help you support and encourage further enjoyable study at home.

It is this final point that of “homework” I would like to address in

more detail. British school’s view homework as supplementary to the taught curriculum, unlike other international schools who see hours of homework key to academic excellence. We recog-nise that children work very hard during the school day and they need to enjoy their down time to play, interact with others and

develop social skills. We also recognise the importance of parents working

closely with their children sup-porting them with work such as reading , writing, timetables, measurement, time etc, etc. This can be made into an enjoyable fun experience one that both engages and encourages further study. Added to this basic home-work, we can add specific topic work, weekly spellings work and work to prepare for weekly mental mathematic tests. All in all it’s about striking a bal-ance between home and school. It’s about allowing children to be children and supporting them in a

“fun” way to learn everything from how to tell the time to writing a story. Most im-portant of all, is that we impart a zest for learning

whether from books or the inter-net and that we are always there to help them investigate, discover and apply their new knowledge to the world around them, without carrying kilos and kilos of books home every night and working from number pages until they fall asleep.

Our FS 1 Students was able to raised BD170+ during their cupcake sale for the benefit of Bahrain

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA).

We would like to thank Miss Michelle from the BSPCA and her lovely friends Daisy and Rufus for visiting Capital School. We learned so much about how to treat animals kindly!

We offered noth-ing but the best in Early Morning Club. One of the activity they en-

joyed was the Disney/Pixar’s ‘The Good Dinosaur movie. It was a heartwarming story about friendship.

They learnt how overcoming one’s fear, friendship, and self discovery. The movie had been followed by an art activity and group discussions.

Persistent Cough or Sore Throat

A persis-tent cough is likely to be disrup-tive in class, and is one of the primary ways of spreading a flu infection. If your child has a severe sore throat and a regular or persistent cough, keep him or her home until the cough is nearly gone or easily con-trolled.

Red Runny Eyes or Rashes

Red, runny eyes can dis-tract a child from learn-ing and can be difficult to manage in class. A rash can be a sign of another infection, or a reaction to the flu virus. Keep your child home

until these symptoms clear up, or until you've checked with the doc-tor about them.

When It's Safe to Send Your Child Back to School

It may be easier to determine when your child is too sick to go to school than to make the call about when he or she is ready to go back. Sending your child back too soon can delay his or her recovery and subject other children to the virus as well.

The student may return to school:

after taking the doctor’s pre-scribed medication for a mini-mum of 24 hours.

as long as they don’t have a fever or other serious symp-toms.

Our young ex-plorers exhibited their work in their class last February 2, 2016. Students learned about

life in ancients times and the im-pact it has made on us today. The students' work was displayed in the reception area for a week for parents / guardians for them to be part in our exhibition.

How to Handle School Sick Days

During flu season, parents do their best to keep kids

healthy, but sometimes even the most vigilant pre-ventive measures can’t stand up to the flu.

Preventing the spread of flu in schools is critical to keeping eve-ryone as healthy as possible. Healthcare professionals recom-mend that sick children stay home until they're recovered

enough to go back to school, typically about 24 hours after symp-toms improve. This helps not only to pro-tect the child's health, but also to pre-vent the spread of the virus to other children.

Determining whether your child is well enough to go to school can be tricky.

Consider the following signs as you make your decision:

Fever:

If your child has a temperature of 99.5 degrees F or more,

it's best to keep him or her home. A fever is a sign that the body is fighting off infection, which means your child is vulnerable, and can also spread the virus to others. Wait at least 24 hours after the fever has come down and stabilized without medication to consider sending your child back to school.

Vomiting and Diarrhea

Vomiting and di-arrhea are good reasons for your child to stay

home. These symptoms are too difficult to deal with at school, and are signs that the child is still capable of spreading the infection. Wait at least 24 hours after the last episode before con-sidering a return to school.
