This is your district’s complete guide to training and special programs being offered through the Model Schools Program of Capital Region BOCES. These courses are free of charge to staff in the Model Schools Districts. Please note that there is a fee for Blackboard courses (online courses) unless your district subscribes to the Blackboard service. Staff in districts that do not participate in the NERIC Model Schools Service or Blackboard may also participate in these training workshops. See the course descriptions for prices.
How to Register – We have a new system!
Please go to the Model Schools page at http://instruct.neric.org/training/msp.htm and click on Online Registration – WebReg. This will take you to My Learning Plan.
Once you find a course you are interested in attending, click on the name of the course. You will then find more details about the course on the next screen. (Be sure to check the Fee area – Model Schools courses are free to MS districts, while Blackboard online courses are free to Blackboard subscribers. A list of participation by district is included in this catalog on the next page).
Click on Click to Enroll. If you are not aware that your school subscribes to My Learning Plan, click on I’m a new user and then enter your first name, last name, and e‐mail address. Click Next. On the next screen, please fill in the required fields. Click Create Account. Check over the Activity Summary, and if it looks right, click Next. Then click I Agree if you agree to the terms of this registration. You will then see your Registration Summary. You are all set! In the future, you would go to I’m a registered user – you only need to create the account once. Your account in My Learning Plan will also help you to keep track of your own professional development! (Directions also located at the end of this catalog).

This full‐day sesion introduces participants to the new interface and enhanced features of Access 2007. Practical exercises that can be easily integrated and adapted for use across the curriculum and in the workplace will be the course’s focus. Topics covered will include: database fundamentals, designing and creating relational databases, working with tables, forms, queries and reports, and integration with other MS Office applications.

Teachers taking this course will learn to use FrontPage to create a unique Web site for their classroom, and will be introduced to different techniques for implementing a Web site as a way to provide information to students, parents, and the community. FrontPage sites can be one page or many pages, from simple to very complex. You will develop a theme and create a story board to plan your site in order to make it clear and effective. Areas covered will include creating backgrounds with colors and textures, collecting and inserting Web pages and digital images, linking to other sites, working with tables and images, and more. This course is designed for those who have already completed a beginner’s level Activstudio course, and have had an opportunity to use an Activboard on their own. In this session, we will cover the topic of creating containers. This technique allows you to set up a page in which students can sort or drag‐and‐drop pictures or text. Students will know right away if they were correct, as incorrect answers can return to the original location to be re‐sorted. You will set up your own flipchart page using this process.

In this session, we will cover the topic of creating and using a magic revealer. With a flipchart page properly layered, students can drag a “looking glass” or other shape over a picture or text to reveal what is underneath. You will learn how to build a magic revealer and save it in your library, as well as explore some ideas for using the technique. Elementary participants may use Activprimary for this lesson.

Create interactive word processing documents using Microsoft Word. Design customized handouts related to your subject area and create “form fields” for students to type in as they enter data or answer questions right on the computer. Customize the document with graphics and colors too. Learn how to “review” students work by adding text and audio comments to their documents. Students can “review” too! The software even enters your comments in a different color! This works on both Mac and PC. The documents can be printed, saved to disks/computers/ flash drives, attached to emails, or uploaded to Blackboard courses!

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 ‐ Introduction
Photoshop Elements 2.0 is the consumer version of Adobe Photoshop, the standard for digital image editing. Elements is a popular and powerful product that allows for image capture, creation and editing on both PC and Mac platforms. The course, emphasizing image creation for the Web, has a four‐week duration and requires approximately 15 hours of time to complete. Topics covered include: the interface, tools and controls, basic image correction, creating a photo montage, working with layers, photo retouching, adding text to your images, and creating a photo vignette and Web photo gallery. Participants who complete all the assignments, assessments and projects will receive a certificate of completion for 15 hours of participation. Introduction to Digital Photography Are you interested in taking better pictures with your digital camera, sharing your photos online, or using your digital camera for curriculum integration in the classroom? This fun and instructional online course has a seven‐week duration and will require approximately 21 hours of time to complete. The focus will be on: taking better still pictures with a digital camera, using some of your camera’s manual features, basic photo correction, sharing and viewing your photos online, and using digital cameras for curriculum integration in the classroom. If this is your first online session, the course will introduce the user‐friendly Blackboard Learning System and its collaborative features. PowerPoint is a fabulous means for delivering interactive classroom instruction as well as providing a valuable technique for students to show their learning through the integration of multimedia technology. This introductory five week course is designed primarily for educators who would like to use PowerPoint as an instructive tool. The activities contained in this course are easily adapted to non‐teaching staff, as well. During this class you will receive step‐by‐step direction for building a PowerPoint presentation from the bottom‐up, including working with graphics, sound, narration, transitions, and adding effects. Microsoft Publisher is an easy‐to‐use program for desktop publishing. You can make flyers, brochures, certificates, cards, posters, business cards, signs, and much more! In this course, you will learn how to put together professional‐looking publications easily and quickly. You can add clipart or your own pictures, and you will learn how to format them for your publications. There are so many uses for MS Publisher in a classroom setting. You can create customized signs and posters for your classroom worksheets, or templates for your students to work from. You will get some great ideas for how your students can make the most of this program as well. You will even learn how to make T‐shirt iron‐ons using Publisher. What’s New in Children’s and Young Adult Literature
This course is designed for teachers who wish to update and enhance their knowledge of children’s and/or young adult literature. Over the six‐week duration, participants will submit a self‐introduction and write a response to an online article. Class members will also be required to read from 5 through 19 recent children’s or young adult books which may include picture books, middle grade books, or longer fiction/nonfiction titles publisher since 2003. Web‐based links to recommend titles will be provided, but the actual selections will be up to individual participants. Class members will submit a brief book review for each title read citing curriculum/standards connections and suggestions for classroom use. The facilitator will post student reviews on the Internet offering a readily available database of titles and ideas for participant use. Previous class reviews can be seen at http://www.nisk.k12.ny.us/kidlit/classreviewcontents.html. If this is your first online session, the course will introduce you to the user‐friendly Blackboard Learning System and its collaborative features. The Wiki Primer
Wikis are free, online Web sites that are used for collaborative authoring. This four‐week overview emphasizes using wikis in the classroom and for remote document authoring. Participants will utilize a “closed wiki” for the duration of the course, and complete some of the exercises as part of a work group. Topics covered will include: exploring popular wikis, markup language, formatting and document design, linking, wiki etiquette and miscellaneous system functions. In keeping with the open nature of wikis, the style and some content of the wiki will be determined by the class. 1. Go to the Model Schools page at http://instruct.neric.org/training/msp.htm and click
on Online Registration – WebReg. This will take you to My Learning Plan.
2. Once you find a course you are interested in attending, click on the name of the course. You will then find more details about the course on the next screen.
3. Click on Click to Enroll. If you are not aware that your school subscribes to My Learning Plan, click on I’m a new user and then enter your first name, last name, and e‐mail address. Click Next.
4. On the next screen, please fill in the required fields. Click Create Account. Check over the Activity Summary, and if it looks right, click Next.
5. Then click I Agree if you agree to the terms of this registration. You will then see your Registration Summary. You are all set! In the future, you would go to I’m a registered user – you only need to create the account once. Once you have an account, you can just go to www.mylearningplan.com for future logins.
HINT: If you want to filter through courses quickly, you can choose to view only Model Schools (these tend to be at districts after school), Centralized (these tend to be at NERIC during the day), or Blackboard (online) courses by clicking on one of these items in the Programs window of the catalog, and then clicking View Now. You’ll then have a much shorter list to view, which may make it easier to find what you are looking for!
