The subjunctive is not a tense; rather, it is a

mood.

Tense refers to when an action

takes place (past, present, future),

while mood merely reflects how the

speaker feels about the action.

The subjunctive mood is rarely

used in English, but it is widely used in Spanish

The doctor recommends that she take the pills

with food.

La doctora recomienda que ella

tome las pastillas con comida.

The law requires that you be 18

years old to vote.

La ley requiere que tú tengas 18 años para votar.

Ellos van a Hawai en agostoThey are going to Hawaii in August.

Dudo que ella vaya a Hawai en agostoI doubt that she goes to Hawaii in August.

Gramática: El subjuntivo

1. Verbs have tense (present, past or future) and mood (the speaker’s attitude towards the action) and up to this point we have been using the indicative mood that reports facts and things that the speaker considers certain.

El fútbol (es, fue, era, ha sido, será) divertido.

2. You will use the subjunctive mood to express hopes and wishes with expressions like Espero que… Ojala que…, and Quiero que…

Espero que mi novia llegue antes

de las 5:00 p.m.

3. When a sentence starts with these phrases and the subject of the sentence changes after que, the verb that follows que is in the subjunctive mood.

Quiero que Chelsie me ayude con los regalos.

Espero que la guerra termine pronto.

4. To conjugate a regular in the subjunctive, start with the yo form of the verb in the present tense, take off the –o, and add the following endings. Most of the stem-changing verbs do not have the stem change in the nosotros form.
