From theCEO

Tenakotoukatoa

It is my pleasure to welcome you to CPIT.

Whether you are a returning student or new to CPIT, I hope you will make the most of your study experience and enjoy the opportunities and experiences our institute provides.

To help you on your way, CPIT’s Orientation festivities start on February 14 and are designed to provide you with a chance to meet new people and explore our excellent student services such as the Health Centre, Library, Disability Services, Recreation Centre, IT, International, Maori and Pasifika services, learning services and career advice amid two weeks of live music, barbeques, competitions and general fun for all to enjoy. The CPIT Orientation carnival really is a fantastic opportunity to get involved and engage in campus life, so keep an eye out for posters around the campus for more information.

In addition to our services, the facilities at CPIT are also impressive so do take the time to explore your campuses. For example, we have a television studio, on-site radio station, music recording studio, commercial kitchens and bakeries, a training restaurant, hairdressing salon and a range of computing suites, to name but a few.

In the weeks ahead, our friendly staff will be available to help you find your way around campus – all you have to do is ask.

I’m sure you will enjoy your time here at CPIT so all the best for 2011 and I hope to see you around campus.

From thePrez

You are here to succeed and my job is to make sure that you do! I’m here, so that you get what you want out of your Students’ Association. This Association is collectively owned by all CPIT students - that includes you.

To start with, we run Events right throughout the year. Our first is our Orientation programme from Monday Feb 14th- Friday Feb 25th.

If you have any ideas for events to run or maybe you want something to happen for your class- drop me a line. Don’t be shy to utilise our services - the more they are used the better!

There are chances to win cool prizes just by registering your details with us. (I’m trying to figure out a way to get an Apple iPad to be a major Prize for you!)

This year will be a big one for CPSA and with your engagement, it could be even bigger. There’s the nationwide Rugby World Cup 2011 (third biggest Sporting Event after the Olympics, and the FIFA World Cup - congratulations Spain!) and the recent IPC World Athletics Championship (if you were part of this or know someone that was, come talk to me).

Sometimes we employ students to do small tasks in exchange for $20 grocery or petrol vouchers (which for students is almost as good as real money!).

It may be setting up and cooking meat or veggies on a BBQ (usually at lunchtimes for hungry students), handing out fliers, giving out Capsule Magazines or getting students to fill out surveys -our tasks are easy and its hard being a poor student so get your details to us pronto!

Finally I am looking for Student Leaders from every single class and year in CPIT. If you would like an opportunity to be part of this, please send me your details as I am in the process of developing a Student Leadership Programme.

If you see me out there, come and talk to me, as I enjoy meeting students and I like to make things happen. Let’s look forward to a Great New Year!

From theVice Prez

Kia ora. Greetings to you all, who have come from near and far to this Institution.

Despite the many different cultures here on campus we all have two things in common, our pursuit of knowledge and membership in our Students’ Association.

My name is Shannon Tamehana and I am the Vice-President of the Christchurch Polytechnic

Students’ Association or the CPSA as it is known on campus.

My job is to make sure the President does his job, to make sure that we achieve the goals set for this year and that the daily business gets done.

Right now the Association is looking for seven people to become a part of the Student Executive Council who can help the Association achieve it’s goals for 2011. Successul applicants receive an honorarium as well which is a nice reward on top of the experience.

If you’re looking to extend your skill base and improve the skills you are learning through your qualifications, become a part of the Student Executive. If you want to get involved in Events, Promotions, Marketing, Social Work or Management get yourself nominated for the Student Executive Council. Nominations are open from Feb 14th – Feb 25th, and will be available at the CPSA stalls you will see around campus. I look forward to working for you.

Life as a studentat CPIT

CPSA Executive

At first, joining CPIT as a student can feel nerve wracking. You feel disorientated and slightly lost. The most important thing is to find out where your main classes are held and get to know your tutors and classmates. Once you start to get to know people and your way around the campus you will begin to feel that you are a true CPIT student. It will seem like you have been there for ages in no time. Getting your student card also helps you to feel that you really belong.

There are many people as well as your tutors who can help you find your way around. There is an information desk and staff at the enrolment desks in the foyer are always helpful. The Christchurch Polytechnic Students’ Association (CPSA) has staff available to help you if you have problems with things such as your course or fees or anything that it affecting your study. They also have an advocate who can help if necessary. Your class will elect student reps who will represent your class at CPSA meetings to bring up issues that you or your classmates have. CPSA also run social events such as barbeques, bands and parties. Posters around the campus advertise upcoming events.

The Student Café in the big yellow building is a good place to catch up and make new friends from other courses. Most of the CPSA social events take place here.

When you enrol you have access to the computers in the library. You will get your own account so that you can put money on your student card to print off work. There is also a chill out area in the library where you can relax on bean bags and watch TV. There is a recreation centre where you can participate in sports such as soccer and basketball.

There are many courses that you can choose to study at CPIT. I have found it an exciting place to be part of and I am really looking forward to starting my second year.

Verity

G’day, I hope everybody is having an awesome summer. I’m David Smart and I’m in my second year of social work here at CPIT. I came to CPIT because of its hands-on professional environment. I also like the idea that CPIT is doing good for the community such as it’s Adult Education, Opportunities for Women and its Entry Level Three courses. These have been a springboard for successful careers and higher education. I hope you all get the most out of your education this year and it leads to a successful career. How’s campus life going? Give me a buzz.

The future is nowOur story started when we heard our country had started giving out scholarships. That meant our dream of going abroad was going to be realised. It was incredible for us. We are going to speak the first language of the world which is the English.

Our future and our ambitions start in a great place with friendly people and a beautiful natural environment, which is New Zealand.

MAKING OF DECORATIVE PANELS

Faculty of Trades and Engineering

12 capsule

Welcome to CPIT and the Faculty of Trades and Engineering (FTE).

At Trades & Engineering, we encourage and support our students to develop skills and expertise

within their chosen trade. Our Faculty consists of two schools – Trades Innovation Institute (TII)

situated on Ensors Road, Opawa and the School of Engineering at CPIT’s Madras St campus.

Trades Innovation Institute:At TII we pride ourselves on being one of the largest providers of Trades training in the South Island. We have a relaxed and inviting campus and offer students the opportunity to learn their trade in up-to-date and well equipped workshops.

At TII students can choose to study any of the following trades: Autobody, Automotive, Brick & Block, Carpentry, Electrical, Furniture & Joinery, Gasfitting Drainlaying & Plumbing, Manufacturing, Painting & Decorating, Welding. Most students are able to learn in real-life situations from assisting with the construction processes of building a house on-site at TII, or carrying out minor repairs to vehicles in the Automotive and Autobody workshops.

We are very pleased to be able to offer – where we can – students to be part of a variety of projects that are carried out at the TII Campus. Throughout 2009-10 students played a pivotal role in the construction of the new Student Services Building. This building was designed and built with students in mind, catering for their many and varied needs. During the construction process staff and students developed concrete placement and construction skills adding to their growing knowledge of the industry.

School of Engineering:The School of Engineering is situated on CPIT’s Madras Street Campus and covers various degree diploma and certificate qualifications in – Computer Aided Design (CAD), Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Network Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electrotechnology.

We are pleased to offer our SoE students the opportunity to be involved with CPIT and/or FTE projects, giving them on-the-job experience resulting in an engineering qualification that has a strong practical component making them very valuable to industry on graduation.

We are proud to offer our students the ability to study their chosen qualification with highly skilled and talented teaching staff, as well as providing them with the latest equipment and resources available.

Te Roopu Manaaki Akonga was established almost a decade ago to allow Maori students at CPIT a voice within the CPSA Students Association. The establishment of Te Roopu Manaaki Akonga has allowed an increased awareness of and increase participation in the services available from CPSA and CPIT. Our aim is to identify and implement strategies to strengthen and attract Maori participation. Areas such as cultural identity, having a Maori presence, the provision of resources and student/peer support proposes a suggestion for future questions to establish a combination of both cultural and academic space for Maori students on campus. Once a month we will be holding a hui at Te Puna Wanaka to discuss and suggest how we will address these aims.

During the orientation week we will have a stall in the atrium where you will find the many services and resources that will be available to you, please feel free to ask questions.

Services and resources to date:

• Childcare (Te Wakamanuhuruhuru)

• Scholarships

• Kapahaka every Thursday 10am-12pm (TPW)

6. How does PegX help people? A) PegX fosters trading which increases social connectedness and

B) The skills gained through trading are linked to increased self-sufficiency and improved self-esteem.

7. How does PegX help the planet?A) PegX is a local currency so fossil fuel use for long distance travel is minimised.

B) PegX is an interest free currency and so sidesteps the growth for growth’s sake imperatives built into the mainstream economy, which tend to impact negatively on biodiversity, and sustainability.

8. Is this a tax avoidance scheme?NO! All people and organizations trading to make a profit need to pay tax just like they do when trading in $NZ. Trading in a service other than that which you provide to make your primary source of income is not taxable also, as long as the amount you are making is not ‘material’ in the legal sense.

9. How do I join? You can join either online at

www.pegx.org.nz

or

www.community-exchange.org.nz

or you can contact us and we will send you an application form directly,

call 03 3669978

or email us at [email protected]

or drop in to see us on the 3rd floor at 141 Hereford St.

1. What is it? Pegasus Exchange is a FREE, largely internet based marketplace that empowers people, organisations and businesses to trade goods and services without having to use $NZ. It is designed to assist people to make ends meet and become more economically independent. It is also designed to help people connect, encourage collaboration between groups, and develop a form of trading that benefits the environment rather than degrading it.

2. How does it work? Everyone starts with a balance of Zero and either earns or spends our currency Px (pronounced ‘Pegs’) by selling or buying goods and services.

3. How do you know what is available to buy? We have a website (like Trade me) where people can list what they want to sell.

4. How do you know how many Px you have to spend? Our site also operates like an online bank, listing your transactions and current balance.

5. How does using PegX make me better off in the pocket? PegX is an interest and inflation free currency, which means that

A) you don’t pay interest when you borrow and

B) nobody else has to build the cost of paying interest into the price of what they sell, so things are cheaper.
