ROUND 2 OF THE DIVISION 2 COUNTY LEAGUEThis was always going to be game full of competition and stamina and it proved just that when from the first throw of the ball It was Milltown/Castlemaine’s no.11 Cathal Moriarty who in only 50 seconds into the game took the host side by surprise when he ploughed through Ballymac to score the first goal of the game. This was followed quickly by a well taken free kick in the visitors favour and then another goal from Milltown/ Castlemaines Gavin Horan. Ballymac were down 2-01 but showed no weakness and were not daunted by the scoreboard when Aiden Breen scored 3 points in succession from frees given followed by another point well played by Ballymacs Cathal Dunne. Milltown/ Castlemaine responded with a further 2 points but it was Ballymacs Vinne Horans time to shine when he was given the opportunity to punch the ball taking the visitors keeper Cormac Leane by surprise and scored a much needed goal. 2 further points from Aidan Breen and Padraig McCarthy narrowed the gap significantly and Milltown/ Castlemaines responding 3 points brought the half time score to Ballymac 1-06 to Milltown/Castlemaines 2-06.The second half began with obvious determination when Ballymac restarted with a renewed strength. Aidan Breen handed the home side 3 more outstanding points and a further point from Darragh Regan brought Ballymac to the lead for the first time in the game. Ballymac led their opponents by 3

points for a period of time but going into extra time the visitors fought hard to reel in the home side. Milltown/Castlemaine pushed onto kick 3 free in the final minutes. There is no doubt both sides attacked with great skill to gain the winning points but as the referee blew the whistle for the final time it was all level with a final score of Ballymac 1-16 , Milltown/Castlemaine 2-13.

MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE; GNEEVEGUILLA 1-13 BALLYMAC 2-7On a dry but chilly evening the home side were the the better team for most of the game. That there was only a few points between the sides at the end was largely due to a string of fine saves by goalkeeper Eoghan Kenny, and strong performances by Dara Keane and Cathal Dunne. The home side settled quickly, finding the net early on before adding 3 points. As half time approached we had only 2 Dara Keane points on the board.Barry Lyons was fouled and Dara Keane goaled from the free to leave the half time score G/GUILLA 1-6 BALLYMAC 1-2Two Tadhg Brick points from free’s and one each from Jonathan Lowe and Dara Keane were matched by 4 G/Guilla points, 1-10 to 1-6 with 10 minutes remaining.Ballymac tried hard for another goal while our opponents notched up 3 more points. With only a few minutes left Dara Keane pointed and then Dylan Dunne weaved through for a goal but there was time for no more.

Our next game sees us welcome Desmonds to Ballymac for a Round 2 game. Our u12 girls Gold team travelled to Churchill on Sunday where despite their best efforts they

came up short on the day.

UNDER 14 LADIES; BALLYMAC 7-6 CORCHA DUIBHNE 1-6 The Ballymac girls got into this game straight away with Yvonne Hurley at centre forward leading by example, she got us off the mark with a fine point from our first attack. She fielded the ensuing kick out and set up Ciara Palmer for our first goal. Roisin Rahilly made a strong run forward and her shot for goal hit the post but Ciara followed up to put the ball in the net for goal no 2 after 6 mins. Corcha Duibhne settled more into the game and scored 1-1. Eimer Curran kicked a free for us , before good work from Grainne Galvin & Roisin Rahilly at midfield resulted in 1-2 from Ciara . Just before half time Shona Griffen set up Sarah Mason for another 3 pointer just before half time. Our defence were really good in this half as well with Alyssa Leen, Ella Quirke and Kerry Hennsey doing well as did our goalie Lorna Daly whose kick outs were finding blue jerseys every time. Ciara added1-1, Eimer, Grainne and Yvonne got points and we finished the scoring with Roisin Raggett getting a goal. SENIOR TEAMSt Pats 0:09 Brosna 0:09: St Pats and Brosna shared the spoils in a low scoring encounter played in Blennerville under sunny conditions last Sunday afternoon. St Pats captain, David O’Callaghan registered the first point of the game from a free within a minute and he doubled soon after to leave the home side 2 points up after the first 10 minutes. However Brosna settled into the game with a Tom McGoldrick free. Thematch was leveled after 19 minutes through a great score from Kieran O’Donnell and Brosna then took the lead when Tom McGoldrick again pointed from a free after Eamon Kiely was fouled. St Pats levelled after 27 minutes when Paul McMahon scored a great point under pressure from two Brosna markers. Brosna ended the half strongly with the impressive Timmy Finnegan and Shane Curtin winning a lot of the ball around the middle of the park and 2 unanswered points from Patrick

Moriarty’s fisted effort and Adam Barry to take a 0-5 to 0-3 lead to the break. St Pats came out fighting in the second half to reduce the deficit but were met by a strong defence by Brosna. Brosna scored the first 2 points of the half to further stretch their lead to 4 points. St Pats never gave up and Willie Hurley and Liam O’Sullivan scored two long range scores in quick succession to close the gap to 2 points. Tom McGoldrick then pointed from a free to give Brosna the advantage going into the closing stages. St Pats sensing defeat went in search of scores and up stepped Paul McMahon scoring 3 unreplied points within a 5 minute period to level the game with only 3 minutes of normal time left. Luke Mulligan nudged St Pats ahead on the stroke of normal time but Brosna’s persistence paid off when Adam Barry leveled in injury time to leave the match at 9 points apiece. IN MEMO-

DID YOU THINK YOU HAD PROBLEMS CHANGING YOUR TIMERS LAST WEEK?No doubt a good share of my readers remember the time when we used all look forward to the Cuckoos call to herald in the Summer, as our ancestors used to say ‘ The Cuckoo comes in April. Sings her song in May, In the middle of June she changes her tune and in July she flies away’ but unfortunately in my area at least that is no longer the case and the only way I could now be sure of hearing the Cuckoo would be to buy a Cuckoo clock but I think the collection of brothers Roman and Maz Piekarski would be too much even for me.Now in their 60s, these brothers have been buying and restoring cuckoo clocks since the 1970s and are the owners, proprietors, and restorers-in-residence of Cuckooland Museum, a collection of over 700 cuckoo clocks that is believed to be the largest in the world. When I was leaving school, I went to see a careers officer, Roman said. He looked me up and down and said, ‘Ah, you look like building trade to me.’ I said, ‘I don’t think so’. We used to watch an elderly man across the road who was a clock-maker as a result both brothers trained as clock-makers in Manchester from the age of 15, and became fascinated by cuckoo clocks. “About 45 years ago nobody wanted to have to wind up anything so we started picking them up from all over the world, quite cheaply” Ramon explained. The brothers had built up a collection of about 250 clocks by the late ’80s and now their collection numbers over 700 and they are on display in a former school in Tabley, Cheshire, their home is the headmaster’s house at the front.Ramon added that it is believed that the first cuckoo clock was made in the Black Forest in the 17th century, though its creator is unknown. The oldest clock in their collection is 250 years old and they know where it was made, and who owned it until they bought it.The brothers who have sought and renovated the rarest and most notable cuckoo clocks in the world spent more than 12 hours to change the time on all of their cuckoo clocks last Sunday.

DID YOU KNOW?In developing countries, 43% of the farm labour force is female — but they are often denied access to education and training programs, forbidden from owning property, and excluded from decision-making processes that directly affect their lives. Not only are women powerful allies in keeping forests intact, building climate resilience, and protecting biodiversity — they are critical to the sustainable development of rural communities.Gender equality is not only a question of human rights, it is the key to effectively meeting some of the greatest challenges facing humanity.

DOCTORS TURNED DOWN PAY RAISE SO THEIR FELLOW HEALTH CARE WORKERS CAN GET A RAISE INSTEADInstead of accepting a pay raise for themselves, over 250 Québec doctors have asked the provincial government to give the pay raise to overworked nurses and clerks.Following a newly-proposed medical budget

that would award a salary hike for Québec doctors, a representational group of physicians and medical students wrote an open letter in which they insisted that their fellow health care workers deserved better wages and working conditions.“We, Québec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations. These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks, and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health. The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our salaries… “Contrary to the Prime Minister’s statements, we believe that there is a way to redistribute the resources of the Québec health system to promote the health of the population and meet the needs of patients without pushing workers to the end. We, Québec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be cancelled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the health care workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Québec.”

‘LAZY’ LAWN MOWERS ARE HEROES FOR BEESThere’s no shame in an unmowed lawn. Not only can wild yards and gardens look better than commonly believed, but cutting back on cutting grass can save significant time, energy and money. According to a new study, by mowing every two weeks instead of weekly, we allow more blooming of “weed” flowers like clover and dandelions, thus providing more foraging habitat for local bees. Habitat loss is an increasingly dire problem for many bees and other pollinators, whose ancestral wildflower meadows are increasingly replaced by human development.About 87% of all flowering plants rely on pollination by bees or other animals, often pinning their hopes on just a few local species. Yet many important pollinators are now in decline around the world, a crisis that is widely linked to human-related trends like habitat loss, pesticide use, urbanisation and invasive species.

THE HIGHEST KNOWN PERMANENT RESIDENTS ON EARTH:The Himalayan jumping spider measure less than half an inch end to end, they scurry and hop around the place, as the name suggests, and they’ve been found at 22,000 feet. The spiders have to make do with stray insects that are carried up the mountain by the wind. Other than maybe the bar-headed geese that have supposedly been spotted flying overhead during migration, there aren’t really any other creatures found at this height, let alone calling it their home, making these spiders the highest known permanent residents on Earth.

THIS MAN IS LITERALLY AN ANGEL ON EARTHTurkey has a huge problem with free-roaming dogs and cats. It’s estimated that Istanbul, a city of 11.3 million people, has at least 150,000 free-

roaming dogs. But there are citizens who are making a difference.Erkan Şahin has an Instagram page called “Voice of the Streets” (“Sokakların sesi” in Turkish) where he posts videos and photos of all the stray dogs and cats he feeds on a daily basis.Erkan spends time every day driving around with a boot full of food in search of hungry stray animals and if he comes across an animal that needs medical attention, he befriends it and brings it to a veterinary clinic to get treatment.

Finally this week I wish all readers, advertisers, contributors and all at Walsh Colour Print / Educare.ie a safe and beautiful Easter and if you visit the countryside or beach please leave it as you find it, do not leave anything behind that would injure wildlife and please take care on the roads, water, hills and mountains and make this a Happy Easter for everyone.
