to board and take control of the Maersk Alabama, capturing the captain while most of his crew hides in theship's engine room. Muse, under orders from a localfaction leader, hopes to ransom the ship and crew inexchange for insurance money from the shippingcompany.

The crew manages to evade Muse and cut both engine power and the ship's emergency power, and capturethe pirate leader. Negotiating with the remaining pirates, the crewmen arrange a trade of Phillips for Museaboard the ship's lifeboat, only to have the pirates launch the boat with Phillips still aboard, hoping toexchange the captain for a ransom. As the lifeboat heads for the shore, tensions flare between the pirates asthey run low on khat, lose contact with their mother ship, and are later intercepted by the U.S. Navydestroyer USS Bainbridge. Once additional U.S. Navy ships arrive, Phillips tries to negotiate with Muse, who asserts that he has come too far and will not surrender. In the meantime, the Bainbridge's captain FrankCastellano (Yul Vazquez) is ordered to prevent the pirates from reaching the mainland by whatever meansnecessary.

That night, Phillips is able to escape and swims towards the ships. The navy cannot identify the swimmer asPhillips and therefore takes no action. The pirates catch up to him quickly and fire shots at him, scaring himinto surrendering. The further agitated pirates are also unaware that a SEAL Team has arrived nearby to takecontrol of the situation. While three SEAL marksmen get into positions to fire a difficult shot at each of thepirates, Castellano and the SEALs continue to try to negotiate with the pirates, eventually taking the lifeboatunder tow. Eventually, Muse agrees to board the Bainbridge, believing he will join his clan elders innegotiating Phillips's ransom. In the lifeboat, one of the more agitated pirates, Najee, catches Phillips writinga goodbye note to his wife. When he tries to take the note away, Phillips attacks Najee, but is quicklyrestrained. Najee decides to take full control and attempts to execute Phillips. As they tie him up andblindfold him, the Bainbridge crew stop the tow. The three SEAL marksmen finally all get three clear shotsand simultaneously kill the rest of the pirates. On board the Bainbridge, Muse is taken into custody andarrested for piracy. Phillips is rescued and treated as he goes into shock, but not before continuouslythanking the rescue team for saving his life.

Development

Shortly after the publication of Richard Phillips's memoir A Captain's Dutyin 2010, Sony Pictures optioned the film rights. In March 2011, actor TomHanks attached himself to the project after reading a draft of the screenplay

by Billy Ray.[7] During the following June, director Paul Greengrass was

offered the helm of the then-untitled film adaptation.[8] A worldwide searchsubsequently began to find the film's supporting Somali cast. From thissearch, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed, and Mahat M.Ali were chosen from among more than 700 participants at a 2011 castingcall at the Brian Coyle Community Center in Cedar-Riverside, Minneapolis.According to the search casting director, Debbie DeLisi, the four actors wereselected because they were "the chosen ones, that anointed group that stuck

out."[9]

Producers visited the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum to see the bullet-scarred, five-ton fiberglasslifeboat aboard which the pirates held Capt. Phillips hostage so that they could accurately re-create the boat

and interiors for the set.[10] They were also able to view an example of the Boeing Insitu ScanEagle UAV,

used to monitor the crisis,[11] as well as the Mark 11 Mod 0 (SR-25) sniper rifle, (the type used by the U.S.Navy SEALs), both on display at the museum also.

Filming

Principal photography for Captain Phillips began on March 26, 2012.[12] Filming took place off the coast of

Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.[5][13] Nine weeks were spent aboard the Alexander Maersk, a container ship

identical to the Maersk Alabama, that was chartered on commercial terms.[14]

Music

The film score to Captain Phillips was composed by Henry Jackman.[15] A soundtrack album for the film

was released in physical forms on October 15, 2013 by Varèse Sarabande.[16] Additional songs featured in

the film include:[17]

"Up In Here" by KOVAS"Hilm B Hilm" by Musa Hanhan"Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton"The End" by John Powell, a track from Greengrass' 2006 film United 93

Historical accuracy

In a New York Post article, some of the crew members of the Maersk Alabama accused the film of being

inaccurate in facts and the portrayal of Phillips.[32]

Mike Perry, the Chief Engineer of the Maersk Alabama, also asserted in a CNN interview that the film does

not tell the true story.[33]

Despite complaints of inaccuracy with how the film portrays the events surrounding the hijacking, the film'sdirector, Paul Greengrass, publicly stated that he "stands behind the authenticity of Captain Phillips [...] atthe end of the day, it is easy to make anonymous accusations against a film [...] but the facts are clear [...]Captain Phillips' ship was attacked, and the ship and the crew and its cargo made it safely to port with no

injuries or loss of life [...] That's the story we told, and it's an accurate one."[34]
