hear the views of Britain’s Business leaders in their own words
the challenges facing the country…
… and their own company
Confidence in the economy and this constant press telling us the world is coming to an end; that we are in the biggest financial crisis the world has ever seen, the Eurozone is about to collapse, it is all over, doom and gloom. Actually it is not that bad and the press need to stop talking the country down.
How to drive operational performance and growth in an environment of low economic growth and high cost pressure. How to motivate a large people workforce at a time when there is limited flexibility to pay them more money or give them massive career advancement because the economy is not growing. Access to bank lending and ensuring that continues at a sensible price.
Regulation - not so much in this country but more internationally; Italy, Spain and Germany, European regulation. We are clearly affected by the general economic sentiment, to some degree, but regulation is the one that really dominates what we think about.

Economic confidence, clarity over the economic strategic direction of this Government. Chairman, ftse 250
Our whole role within the world in terms of our defence and military capabilities and how we perceive ourselves as a world player, economically, militarily and socially. managing director
Employment and cash management, debt management. Solvency and how we manage our debt as a country. The only way to sort that out is to raise taxes and to reduce spending. The raising of taxes is going to hurt people and the reduction in spending is going to create unemployment. We have already seen an element of civil unrest, with the students, but we have a very difficult 12 months ahead. Chairman

what do you see as the most important issues facing Britain today?
Lack of liquidity in the debt market, so inability of banks to lend money basically. There is congestion in the financial markets. Rising costs, I am concerned about inflation in the short term, certainly for the next 12 to 24 months.“ “
“ The diminution of the public sector versus increase in the private sector. My view is the private sector will not pick up the slack that the public sector will quite rightly let go, to be honest. “
How we fare in all the volatility around us, current focus on the Eurozone and the burdens of coping with failing economies, or over-stretched economies.“ “
